Planning Ahead - Vegas Hotels 2024

Recommended Posts

For those who wish to "defensively book" a hotel in Las Vegas for next February, be aware that the chain I normally do this through - Marriott - has pre-blocked ALL of their properties in the Vegas metro area except one.  And that property, the Las Vegas Airport Residence Inn, is asking $1,999 per night for a 3-night stay from 2/9 thru 2/12/24.

Disclosure:  I am one of Marriott's higher-ranking frequent travelers.  I hold Lifetime Titanium status - Titanium is one tier below their top-level Ambassador status, which requires $15-20K in annual spending to achieve. And *my* Titanium status is for life, a perk they no longer offer as all other Titanium members have to re-earn it annually.  Marriott properties allow you to book rooms as many as 300 days in advance and can be cancelled without penalty by midnight 1- or 2-days prior to arrival.  For Festivus Maximus 2023 in Phoenix, I had booked at both a Towne Place Suites 5 miles from the stadium and at a full-service Marriott on the other side of town - cancelling for free after our season ended 10 days before arrival.  It's a strategy that has served me well, both for road games where our participation is not guaranteed, and for home games where I book rooms when the schedule comes out, and then decide which to keep and which to cancel once I know which specific weekends I'll be attending.

With all of that said, I have learned that the major chains - Marriot, Hyatt, etc - tend to ignore their 300-day booking window rules and open up reservations a month early for popular destination sites like Vegas and Orlando.  For Marriott in Vegas, it's a 330 day window, as you can currently go to their booking website and pull up possible rooms.  Unfortunately, entering a 2/9 - 2/12/24 stay window results in being informed that virtually every property is Sold Out on the dates in question.  You can book rooms for Friday night 2/9 only (departing 2/10) but if your stay overlaps that weekend - no dice UNLESS you want to drop $6K at the Airport Residence Inn.

Going through third-party booking sites, we have found a few properties that are taking reservations NOW, and that can be cancelled without penalty in February.  Here's a quick run-down of the 2nd and 3rd-tier property listings, in case anyone else wants to follow suit and "defensively book" a room, just in case we have a reason to be in Nevada in February.  All of these are for a 3-night stay, Friday thru Monday, on Festivus Maximus weekend:

The ten cheapest and closest to the stadium that can be cancelled within a week of the game:

- Siegel Select Las Vegas Blvd (2.4 miles from Allegiant Stadium) $1268 total, fully refundable before 2/7/24 (must select the higher fully-refundable rate)

- Siegel Select Convention Center (3.1 miles) $1660, 2/7/24

- Palace Station Hotel & Casino (3.7 mi) $2040, 2/6/24

- Orleans Hotel & Casino (1.2 mi) $2258, 2/8/24

- Travelodge LV Airport Near The Strip (1.2 mi) $2686, 2/8/24

- Westgate LV Resort & Casino (3.5 mi) $2687, 2/6/24

- Ellis Island Hotel (1.8 mi) $3170, 2/6/24

- Best Western McCarran Inn (2.0 miles) $3278, 2/8/24

- Hotel Galaxy (0.3 miles) $3401, 2/8/24

- Trump International Hotel LV (2.7 mi) $4177, 2/6/24

The ten cheapest, regardless of distance, that are cancellable within a week of the game:

- Railroad Pass Hotel & Casino (17.3 miles) $467 total, fully refundable before 2/8/24

- Retreat on Charleston Peak (26 miles) $835, 2/8/24

- Siegel Select Las Vegas Blvd (2.4 mi), $1268, 2/7/24 (must select higher fully-refundable rate)

- Cannery Hotel & Casino (10.9 mi), $1302, 2/8/24

- Main Street Station Hotel, Casino & Brewery (6.2 mi) $1305, 2/8/24

- El Cortez Hotel & Casino (21 & Over Only) (5.9 mi) $1414, 2/7/24

- OYO Gateway Motel LV North Strip (5.1 mi) $1470, 2/8/24

- Fremont Hotel & Casino (6 mi) $1489, 2/8/24

- Sam's Town Hotel & Gambling Hall (6.9 mi) $1614, 2/8/24

- Suncoast Hotel and Casino (8.0 mi) $1631, 2/8/24

Only one property is on both lists: The Siegel Select on LV Blvd.  If anyone cares, I've booked a room there for myself and LT - 2Q Executive Suite with an efficiency kitchen.  My total cost when I booked at $1443, but the extra $$ is because of the slightly-upgraded room I selected.  They collected a $292 deposit when I booked - 100% refundable until 2/7/24.

All of the listing above are via Hotels.com.

FYI, for the Siegel Select, the available fully-refundable rooms right now (noon, 3.2.23) are:

$1268 Studio Suite, 1Q, Kitchenette (3 available)

$1299 Executive Suite, 2Q, Kitchenette (1 available) (last one, 10% discount)

$3355 Accessible Executive Suite, 2Q, Kitchenette (1 available)

That's it.  5 rooms.  All fully refundable before Wed, Feb 7 2024

To find this, go to Hotels.com, enter "Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas" as your destination, Feb 9 - Feb 12 as your dates, 2 travelers 1 room.  Then filter by Fully Refundable and sort by either distance or price.  This property be near the top of the results listing.  There are other properties as well - all of them just as skeezy as this one - but if we want to share the same hotel with other board members, then picking this one for starters seems to be a good idea.

By far and away, my favorite of the slightly off-Strip/fairly nearby locations. Remarkably well-maintained and really good eating on site. Have stayed here a number of times, and have not been disappointed.

The downtown locations (Fremont, Main Street Station) are OK. Main Street the better of the two, with a great on-site brewery. Right at the edge of the Fremont Street Experience, so plenty to do close by.

No matter what the price, stay away from anyplace north Strip or south North Las Vegas. Some are refurbished ‘50’s-era places and not bad as properties, but the location is third-world, and can be dangerous.

The outlying areas—such as those in Boulder City and the west side of the Valley—are decent. The element of driving a bit distance wise should not dissuade—large and fast freeways shorten the distance considerably…well, with the exception of anywhere on I-15, which is a permanent parking lot and perpetually under construction. Same for most stretches of Las Vegas Blvd. Sams Town used to be a really cool place—but it’s pretty old now…albeit for the price, it’s a set-off

So.... exactly like I-75 in Cincinnati, then?

Worse in many respects. There is this monstrosity just north of the Strip called the “Spaghetti Bowl” (conversion of US Routes 95/93 and I-15) which is a concrete nightmare, despite best intentions.

Update:  This property (as of 3.6.23) has sold out of all refundable 2Q rooms EXCEPT for the $3K+ Accessible Executive Suite.

I *strongly* recommend finding and booking a room somewhere in Vegas immediately IF THERE'S EVEN A CHANCE that you might want or need a room there next February.  As long as it's fully-refundable no more than 10 days before arrival you won't be risking any money and wont get gouged with a last-minute booking that may cost $2-3K per night.
