Hobs' notes on the Battle pick:

Quote

THIRD ROUND: Alabama S Jordan Battle: Some people thought the Bengals grabbed the best safety in the draft at No. 95. Others are wondering if he'll be teamed with Hill in the starting lineup by Thanksgiving. One thing is for sure. Battle used his 18-minute interview well with the Bengals at the combine.

"He was fantastic," Trey Brown says. "When you speak to him, you see why he's been successful. He's played a lot of football at Alabama. He's highly intelligent. Great leadership skills. Great knowledge of playing the safety position and he was able to present all that in a short time. I think all these guys have the right stuff and Battle is one of these guys that really fits into the culture Zac has been building here.

"Very versatile. He can play high. He can play low. He has good range, good ball skills, as well as a good, physical tackler. He checks all the boxes you look for in a safety."

Battle also had a good feel for the Bengals in the same 18 minutes.

"I remember they stood out because of how cool the coaches were," Battle said after he was picked. "How they came off, how the vibes were, how supportive they were. Having that relationship early from the combine, and to now, was great."

The Bengals would love for Battle to have the same impact as another Bama safety wreaking havoc in the AFC North with the Stealers. As advertised, Battle has been keeping notes.

"I like to watch a lot of Minkah Fitzpatrick. I love the way he's used," Battle said. "I love how he plays in the box. He's one of those guys when I talk about versatility, one of the guys who does that at the next level. They move him around the slot, the deep part of the field, and in the box. He's a guy I like to watch because he comes down, he does tackle the way he does, and has that playmaking ability in the deep part of the field in making plays and being rangy. He's a guy I like to watch a lot."

Quick reaction but freeze it at 0:17.  He's lowering his head.  That's not good.

NBD though as fidning a proper tackle in the college "big hits" highlight vids is a bit of a unicorn.  At least he's not outright trying to spear someone (*aka Stiller Football) or throwing the ol' forearm shiver (*aka Maualuga USC highlight reel)

I don't doubt he can play but that's a bad habit in someone that likes to hit.  We've got some good coaches but it'll probably be the vets that clean that up as soon as the pads go on.  One way or the other he won't be doing that in the NFL for long.

Question:

Could this guy replace Flowers as sort of a big cornerback covering good tight ends the same

way Flowers was used?

I think the intention is for him to replace Vonn Bell.

Yeah, I think he is the eventual Bell replacement - and his presence allows them to go 3 Safeties whenever Lou needs to and one of Hill or Scott maybe gets the TEs...

Oh, yeah.  I 100% agree but since we are going into the season with three quality Safeties, how about making one a part time Tight End coverage specialist

esp vs teams with a strong TE?  TE's were Marvin killers for most of his time here.

He's probably not the top candidate as a TE coverage specialist. Flowers was a CB with length. He had more footspeed than TEs so he could stick with them or recover when they cut.

Battle was 1 of 3 starting safeties in Alabama's defense. Battle and Hellams were the more physical guys while Branch was the coverage specialist, though he usually took slot receivers.

After watching the first preseason game of this guy's career I can tell you he's going to be a player, he should be starting by the end of the year if not sooner. Battle is a smart and tough player that will get everyone on the same page and also lay you out with a clean but nasty hit.

Hill and Battle are the perfect complements to each other; while Hill is the rangy playmaker making sure no big plays occur, Battle is patroling the LOS like a junkyard dog and he will bite! The fact that he and Dax Hill were the #1 and 2 ranked safeties in the class of 2019 and are now playing in our secondary is amazing, this is going to be one of the best duos in the NFL very soon...Lightning(Hill) and Thunder.

Don't be surprised if Hill Battle and Anderson are your starters by the end of the year. Scott seems to be more of a bridge player.

They definitely have a lot of young, talented players in the secondary. Nice job by the front office and coaching staff in working together to get quality players on the roster
