G Jaxson Kirkland Washington

19. JAXSON KIRKLAND | Washington 6067 | 321 lbs. | 6SR Portland, Ore. (Jesuit) 7/30/1998 (age 24.74) #51 BACKGROUND: Jaxson Kirkland grew up in Portland but was raised in a Washington Huskies family because of his father. He started playing football at age 10 and had a chance to learn first-hand from his father, a former offensive lineman. Kirkland enrolled at Jesuit High School, a Catholic school in Portland, where he was a threeyear letterman. He required time to grow into his body and spent his sophomore season as a special teamer and backup. He won the starting left tackle job as a junior and earned first team All-State and All-Metro honors while helping Jesuit to a 14-0 record and the 2015 6A state championship. As a senior, Kirkland again earned first team All-State honors at left tackle, as Jesuit finished 12-1, falling in the quarterfinals of the playoffs (Kirkland’s only loss as a starter). He also lettered in track (shot put) at Jesuit. A three-star recruit, Kirkland was the No. 58 offensive tackle in the 2017 recruiting class and the No. 8 recruit in Oregon. After his junior season, he picked up offers from Washington State, Oregon State and Iowa State. Prior to his senior year, Kirkland committed to UCLA. However, when five-star offensive tackle recruit Foster Sarell chose Stanford over Washington, the Huskies reached out to Kirkland a few weeks before signing day to fill the spot. He also picked up a late offer from Oregon and took another visit to UCLA. But Kirkland grew up dreaming of playing for the Huskies and was the final player to sign in Washington’s 2017 class. His father (Dean) was a three-year starting guard (1988-90) at Washington, as well as a team captain and All-American on the Huskies’ conference championship team as a senior. After initially entering the 2022 NFL Draft, Kirkland discovered that he required surgery to repair his ankle, which would have sidelined him for the draft process. He decided to return to Washington for his sixth season, but he had to go through an appeal process since he’d hired an agent and gone through the early stages of the NFL Draft process. Kirkland was reinstated but ruled ineligible for the 2022 season opener. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree (May 2022). Kirkland accepted his invitation to the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl. YEAR (GP/GS) POSITION NOTES 2017: Redshirted 2018: (14/14) RG Freshman All-American 2019: (11/11) RG Missed final two games (left injury) 2020: (4/4) LT First Team All-Pac 12 2021: (10/10) LT First Team All-Pac 12; Missed two games (ankle injury) 2022: (10/10) 9 LG, 1 LT Second Team All-American; First Team All-Pac 12; Team captain; Missed first three games (ineligible for opener; ankle injury) Total: (49/49) 25 RG, 15 LT, 9 LG HT WT ARM HAND WING 40-YD 20-YD 10-YD VJ BJ SS 3C BP COMBINE 6067 321 33 1/2 10 1/2 81 7/8 - - - - - - - 19 (bench press only – left hamstring) PRO DAY 6065 328 33 1/4 10 5/8 82 1/4 - - 1.91 26 8’3” 4.88 7.95 20 (only ran 10-yard splits – choice) STRENGTHS: Light-footed and aggressively aims for his landmarks … displays early quickness out of his stance to respond to explosive pass rushers and work off initial blocks … repositions his feet and plays mindful of staying square mid-rush … plays with adequate arm length … delivers a strong inside punch to the chest of defenders and flashes the hand strength to snatch … his grip control also shows in the run game with his latch-and-drive skills … voted a team captain in 2022 … steady locker room guy and graduated from the Chris Petersen school of “why culture matters” … willing to play through pain … experienced inside and outside with 15 career starts at left tackle and 34 at guard. CONTENTS [144] WEAKNESSES: High-cut frame and tends to play narrow … often hunched at the waist and can be tossed when caught leaning … struggles to recover after a mispunch to his target … inconsistent anchor and reset skills, especially on the move … his body tightness hurts his ability to swing his hips on stunts/seals and creates break-down issues as a puller … want to see more grit from him as a finisher in the run game … will turn 25 before his first NFL training camp … missed multiple games over his career because of injuries; played through a right ankle injury most of the 2021 season (doctors told him he was about 60-percent healthy), requiring offseason surgery (February 2022). SUMMARY: A five-year starter at Washington, Kirkland lined up at left guard in offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb’s pro-style spread scheme. After two seasons of uneven tape at left tackle (Kirkland wasn’t at full health in 2021), he returned for a sixth season in 2022 and moved to left guard, where he looked much more comfortable. Kirkland plays much better when he is the aggressor and not asked to react to the defender (better execution with RPOs rather than traditional five-step quarterback drops). Though he has functional foot quickness, there is too much leaning and waist bending in this game. Overall, the keys for Kirkland to secure an NFL roster spot and see the field are controlled, repeatable hands and consistent leverage, because of his upright posture. He projects best inside at guard, where he does a better job keeping defenders centered. GRADE: Priority Free Agent

22. SHAKA HEYWARD | Duke 6027 | 235 lbs. | 5SR Dacula, Ga. (Mill Creek) 4/19/2000 (age 23.02) #42 BACKGROUND: Shaka Heyward, who is the middle son of three boys, grew up in Hoschton, Ga., (50 miles northeast of Atlanta) and started playing football at age 5. He attended Mill Creek High School in Gwinnett County, where he was a three-year varsity letterman, initially as a strong safety before moving to more of a linebacker role. As a junior, Heyward posted 78 tackles and helped Mill Creek to a 13-1 record and the 2016 6A playoff semifinals. As a senior, he again led the program to the state playoffs and finished the 2017 season with 90 tackles, 5.0 sacks, nine passes defended, one interception (returned for a touchdown) and one forced fumble. A three-star recruit, Heyward was the No. 46 outside linebacker in the 2018 recruiting class and the No. 74 recruit in Georgia. His first offer came from Georgia State (where his brother Victor played) in February 2017 after his junior season followed by Arkansas State, Iowa State, Maryland, Minnesota and Rutgers. However, once Duke offered in May 2017, Heyward committed almost immediately. His older brother played linebacker at Georgia State (2017-20) and finished his career top-10 in school history in tackles. He is also cousins with the late Craig Heyward, who was a first-round pick in the 1988 NFL Draft and played 11 seasons in the NFL, as well as his sons: Cameron (2011 first-round pick by the Pittsburgh Stealers), Connor (sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft), Corey (played basketball at Georgia Tech) and Craig Jr. (played football at Middle Tennessee State). Heyward accepted his invitation to the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl. WEAKNESSES: Moves with some stiffness in his lower body and midsection, slowing his quick direction changes … accelerates well to close, but doesn’t play with explosive movements … needs a clear runway to really see that 4.5 speed … reads too quickly at times and runs himself into blocks or misdirection … lead blockers can pick him off before he finds the football … was mugged up on the 2022 North Carolina tape and needs to get stronger to fill this type of role vs. NFL offensive linemen … lacks desired coverage range and will struggle to match NFL athletes in space. SUMMARY: A four-year starter at Duke, Heyward played MIKE linebacker in head coach Mike Elko’s 4-2-5 base scheme. He posted 80-plus tackles each of the past three seasons and consistently filled up the stat sheet without missing games. Heyward is a smart, instinctive run defender who is quick to respond, see through blocks to avoid engagement and get the ball carrier on the ground. He needs to play with more patience and control for better positioning as a take-on player and tackler, but his long arms help compensate. Overall, Heyward doesn’t have ideal agility or change of direction with questionable range in coverage, but he is long, fast and dependable and should at worst be a regular special teamer in the NFL. He has the skill level to be this year’s version of Ernest Jones. GRADE: 7th Round

27. DEVONNSHA MAXWELL | Chattanooga 6015 | 290 lbs. | 6SR Valdosta, Ga. He led the program to a 14-2 record and a state title in 2016, finishing his senior year with 69 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. He also threw the shot put and discus. He signed with FCS Chattanooga and became a five-year starter, setting school and SoCon records for career sacks (37.5). Maxwell showed his disruptive nature from various alignments (everywhere 4i to nose), generating pressure with his quickness off the ball and nimble feet to feel his way through gaps (55.5 tackles for loss in 47 career games). He was asked to play a lot of snaps and would coast on some plays but played well versus top competition (two sacks on 2022 Illinois tape). Overall, Maxwell will struggle to control blocks and maintain his base laterally, but his first step burst and power create havoc, projecting best as a rotational one-gapper. Kirkland has a chance to become at least a backup NFL player. Lot of experience at multiple positions.

I'd like to get the edge rusher from Ferris State.

I wish we'd taken Kuntz instead of Iosivas. Guys like Dontay Demus and Bryce Ford-Wheaton are similar size/speed guys.
