Jamie_B
SUMMARY: Demeatrius “DJ” Ivey is a South Florida native who started his prep career at Homestead High before transferring to South Dade. As a senior, he collected six interceptions. A four-star recruit, he chose his hometown Hurricanes over offers from Auburn, Georgia and others. After a rocky first four years at Miami, he returned in 2022 and had his best season, although he still gave up too many explosive plays (see the 2022 Middle Tennessee and Florida State tapes). Ivey uses his long arms to jam and stay connected in his turn-and-run along the sideline. He has the short-area footwork to match routes, but his eye balance and lack of route recognition leads to wasted steps out of breaks and separation for the receiver. His tackling and ball skills are fine, but they aren’t exactly strengths of his game. Overall, Ivey struggles to anticipate, but he is tall, long and athletic, can play both man and zone and can compete for a spot on the back end of an NFL roster. |BlackJesus|
a 77" (6'5) wingspan at 6'0 is very impressive and rare, it's why his arms basically go down below his knees. He also plays with some of that 'U' swag that is never a bad thing.
sois
I need 4.3 40 guys, I guess this guy can be a safety. Just sort by 40 or bench reps and get those guys.
|BlackJesus|
Evaluation: Good length and athletic build for the position. Has played as the boundary corner, field safety, and in the slot. Lots of press bail technique that is applied correctly. Will get physical at the snap and play through the ball at the top of routes. Shows no issue carrying vertical routes. Can adapt to route stems and cutoffs with fluidity. Mostly a press-quarters player with not a lot of true man coverage wins. Won't offer much as an open-field tackler. Not a lot of games played snap to snap. Ivey looks the part and has promising traits that can carry over to the next level. His main issue is a lack of production largely tied to his amount of snaps. Grade: 5th Round Background: DJ Ivey is a solid contributor to the Hurricanes' defense, where he made four starts at corner and had twenty-five tackles and a sack. Ever since he came to Miami, starting in 2018, Ivey has seen playing time and has made a difference. For example, in 2019, as a sophomore, he led the team with three interceptions. In high school, he was a four-star prospect from South Dade High School and was the thirty-third best cornerback. Ivey had an excellent start where in his senior season at South Dade, he had an interception in four straight games. Now in 2022, Ivey will be looked at as a top corner for the Hurricanes.
