They gave him a nominal 200 million dollar salary for 2029. It guarantees on the 3rd day of the league year in 2027 so that forces them to release him (presumably with the post June 1 designation) on the first or 2nd day of 2027. In other words they plan to keep him for 2026. I thought they would just release him the first day of the 2026 league year with a post June 1 designation but they are going to keep him around for a year longer.

What an albatross, holy shit.  This should be the example teams give to agents as to why they're not tossing out guaranteed contracts to everyone.

I guess they had to rub and tug the contract …

Watson is basically holding the team hostage, just like he did his massage therapists.

💩 Mistake on the Lake, getting raped just like they do their fans dreams. Fuck em

The Giants know their pain to some extent, so too Will the Dolphins. The Falcons, who were ridiculed for drafting Penix after signing Cousins might come out smelling like roses.

As far as Watson and the Browns are concerned, the Browns are 100% to blame for the fiasco.  Saying Watson is holding them hostage is laughable.  The Clowns knew he had a serious character issue yet gave him that stupid contract.

There are very few QBs playing that would be worth all those draft picks and a quarter bil guaranteed.  Even with the "maybes" we could count them on one hand.

Watson sure as hell isn't one of them. What were they smoking?

Watson had looked very good in the last full season he played, in 2020. He sat out 2021, then demanded and got his trade for 2022. Then he missed most of the season in 2022 with his suspension and has stunk since then. The Browns obviously thought they were getting the 2020 version of Watson who led the league in passing yards. So they paid 230 million to find out a change of scenery wouldn't help him.

Did the Browns know of his lawsuits?

If so they got what comes with his play.

Fuck him and the Browns .

Yes, the Browns knew about the 20+ civil claims vs Watson. They structured the first year's salary to be minimal in the expectation he'd serve a suspension.

I'm not sure there has ever been a guy who was out of the league for 2 years that came back and played at the same level he did before he went out.

Looking at his season stats he was better with Houston than I gave him credit for but not with the price they paid, even if we ignore all the creep stuff.   That's kind of hard to ignore, though, and for the team to sign him knowing all that..  No sympathy. They've crippled themselves out of desperation.  With their history at that position it starts to make sense, but then there's Baker Mayfield in Tampa and I have to wonder how many others would've worked out fine if the organization wasn't such a tire fire. Now they're stuck with a sex offender & the NFL won't protect him like Roethlisberger if he can't even play (among other reasons.)

If Watson were still putting up 4800 passing yards plus 400 rushing yards with a 70% completion rate and 112 passer rating, they wouldn't regret the trade. Those were his numbers from 2020. Browns would just live with the bad publicity for his creepiness.

The browns owners have serious character issues.  Haslam knew about gas Pilot Flying J rebate fraud for years
