Which is front office, but this also includes coaching, coaches are a part of the draft process, and coaches are supposed to coach those guys up. 

 

I think that part of being critical of the coaching is completely legitimate.

And as far as “chemistry”, I will always remember that the early ‘70’s A’s hated each others’ guts…didn’t slow them down.

Also the lack of preparation, the slow starts, the miscues & procedural penalties, the inability to find any form of ground game or even make positive yards consistently, the poor tackling and run fits, the undisciplined, lost in space secondary, the handful of WTF play calls on critical downs on both sides of the ball..

 

But yeah other than that and their board underperforming an AI mock draft, the coaches are fine.

What's wild is much of the defense this wasn't an issue for during the two years we went to the AFCC back to back. Has the loss of Bates and Reader in the past two years hurt these other guys that were on that team that much?

They tried to replace 2 of the best players on defense with midround draft picks and retread free agents. That was a choice.

 

2 years is forever in NFL terms.  They're not keeping pace with the rest of the league.   Status quo won't get them back to a Super Bowl, they have to be better than that team was just to compete now. Not going anywhere if they can't win inside the division.

From the 2022 team that made the AFC championship game they lost both safeties and both starting CBs.  (I know Vonn Bell is back, but come on...)  CTB played due to injury.  They've also lost Reader and Hubbard is a shadow of his 2022 self due to injury.  So, yes...that's a lot of personnel changes.  Take and good defense and replace three of your better players with Joe Average or worse (Bates, Reader, Hubbard) and it's not likely to look good.

Baseball metrics has a gauge: WAR…Wins Above Replacement. Is the guy coming in worth more in one season, over the guy leaving? 
 

No one who has come in at safety has come anywhere close to even adding a +1 win over JBIII. Same for Reader. Same for Joe Mixon. Etc 

 

They are soon going to find out that Tee isn’t going to have anywhere near a + replacement. Not from this roster anyway. 

 

As noted, each season in the NFL is its own unique placement in time. “Maybe a draft pick upgrades the position in time”. Maybe..but in the here and now, WAR can’t be measured by that statement.

Yes father time has slowed Hubbard, but our LBs are still solid IMO. I think if we can add a CB1 in FA, a RDE and another NT or 3 Tech that can get some penetration we can improve this D in the offseason. Then in the following offseason focus on fixing the 2nd safety position and adding another LB. I don't think we can fix it all in one offseason.

I must admit being disappointed in the team for not being more active with free agents.

Two names Bengals Wire and Cincy Jungle mentioned were:

It can’t get any worse for the Bengals at cornerback right now. The fact that the Bengals’ pass defense is so bad that they lose games where Joe Burrow put up brilliant performances is one of the biggest frustrations in the NFL right now. The Bengals brought in Xavien Howard for a visit, but he walked away with no deal.

At this point, getting some more talent in the door would be wise and Bryant is still just 26 years old, so he’d be nice short-term depth and perhaps a long-term member of the roster.

 

Kinda like what's to lose?  It isn't like some of our current 53 are exactly setting the world on fire.
