dex Posted June 30 Report Posted June 30 Burton has an excellent senior season highlight reel, but it could have been even better if he hadn't had a whopping 4 TD receptions called back due to OL penalties. Don't think I've ever heard of a WR having as many as 4 TDs called back in a college career, much less a single season. He even had 2 would-be highlight reel TD plays called back in one game against Texas last season. Not once, but twice, Jermaine Burton had a touchdown pass called back due to a flag. The first score was wiped out due to an ineligible-player-downfield call on right guard Darrian Dalcourt in the second quarter after Burton dove to catch a 15-yard pass from Jalen Milroe in the end zone. The receiver was then robbed of a 32-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter after left tackle Kadyn Proctor was called for holding. 1 Quote
dex Posted July 10 Report Posted July 10 Pro Football Focus head of football product Steve Palazzolo recently discussed the Burton selection on The Growler podcast with Paul Dehner Jr. “Jermaine Burton, my favorite draft pick in the entire draft,” Palazzolo said. “I think he was the fourth-best receiver in the draft.” Palazzolo went on to say, “He can be the most important draft pick in this draft class for any team if he’s as good as I think he is, and other people around the league think he is, but they just have to figure out keeping him in line, because he can be a special player to go to Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.” After watching Burton's film, Palazzolo has become a huge fan. He says Burton brings incredible athleticism and explosiveness to the Bengals' already talented offense. If Burton is able to produce well at the professional level, the 80th overall pick in the draft will be a special player for the Bengals for years to come. 1 3 Quote

Every WR in the NFL would love to have a franchise QB throwing him the ball. Burton is one of the lucky few who does. In interviews he seems almost giddy about it too. 1 Quote

Right, Joe's quite a step up from Jalen Milroe and Stetson Bennett. 2 Quote

Burton has a couple of pluses going for him that almost never get mentioned, maybe because they are so unique. 1) Burton played for 4 different HS teams in 4 years, then had 2 different starting QBs in 2 years at Georgia then another 2 QBs in his 2 years at Alabama. That means he had 8 different starting QBs throwing him the ball in 8 years of HS/college. That means he is used to making adjustments to different QBs and different systems. His rookie learning curve might not be as steep as it would be for every other drafted WR this year. 2) Burton was credited with 8 TD receptions in 2023, but he had 4 called back because of OL penalties. So while they don't show up in his highlight reels or stat sheets, those overturned TDs still show how productive he can be. I'm sure the coaching staff don't just watch highlights, they watched raw tape of every single play he was involved with at both Georgia and Alabama. So they saw his diving TD catch against Texas that was called back due to no fault of his own. Burton was actually an unlucky WR in 2023. 3 Quote

Plus, they've seen Burton in practice going against a number of guys who are already, or who will be in the NFL in short order. Same deal with Mims, going against guys like Davis, Walker, etc.. Iron sharpens iron. 1 Quote
