ESPN's Ryan Clark: Bengals' Mike Brown 'absolutely robbing' Ja'Marr Chase with no new deal

Recommended Posts

I don't see the Bengals guaranteeing 3/4's of Chase's contract & I don't think they should either. There are already a couple of teams that have hurt themselves with guaranteed money to guys that aren't even on the team. Denver will pay Russell Wilson $39M to go play for the Stealers this season.

Chase is a safer bet than a midtier 35 year old QB but it still seems like a bad idea to guarantee that much money.

Moore could irreparably blow out his knee in game one this year & then what? I don't think they should walk away with nothing in that scenario, but 80 mil?

The new price of Hall of Fame talent (which Ja'Marr is, Moore isn't) is huge guarantees. It's just the nature of the beast at this point and the price of fielding a contending team. The opposite is not having any star players and no big guarantees to worry about, but then never making the playoffs and being everyone's 'Homecoming Game' on the schedule (see the 'dark decade' of the 1990s in Cincy).

The Bengals need to WAKE THE FUCK UP that Ja'Marr is not playing a single down until he's paid.

I am baffled why they are just walking around like this isn't the daily reality, staring everyone in the face. They need to spare us with the daily reports that Ja'Marr is not in pads again, or sitting the practice out. News flash! ... He will be sitting all of them out until you give him an extension!

Do not expect Ja'Marr to play in any practice, pre-season game, or regular season game for the foreseeable future. If they want his services this season, they will need to extend him. And unlike Tee, the fans will take Ja'Marr's side in this stand off.

To hopefully avoid this issue in the future, the Bengals will be trading away their first round draft pick for another team’s 2nd, 3rd, and 4th….and then trade each 2nd round picks for a 3rd and a 4th.

0 1st round picks

0 2nd round picks

4 3rd round picks

4 4th round picks

…potentially turning those two picks that they can’t/won’t resign or extend into eight more-affordable options.  🥷

They haven't drafted all these WRs to guarantee one $100M. He can go be the only good player on a desperate team

If you are advocating getting rid of Ja'Marr, probably the 3rd best player to ever put on a Bengals uniform after Munoz and Burrow, then you're crazy

You do not let someone of his talent level leave your team in their prime. It would be malpractice. Even if a team gave 3 first Rd picks in a trade it's not enough.

This team is designed to ride Burrow and Ja'Marr to championships. If you break up that duo, then they don't deserve a Lombardi (and likely won't sniff one).

This team is Joe Burrow and rhen everyone else. If he's upright they have a shot at a championship. If he's hurt they don't.

Montana needed a Rice. Mahomes needs a Kelce.

Dynasties are usually a dynamic duo who combines their greatness. I think Burrow is the best QB in the NFL, but he can't throw TDs to himself.

Is Chase the best WR in the NFL? He's in the conversation but he's not irreplaceable.

The issue for me is more that they were poormouthing over Higgins because they needed to pay Chase. Now that it's time to do so they balk.

Keep saying it but they're going to have to spend all that free cap money somehow.

Duke Tobin made it clear in the interview last week that they have been having "conversations" with Chase's agent. I took that word as just another term for ongoing contract talks. This is in direct contrast to what has obviously been going on with Higgins, where they clearly haven't spoken with his agent in many months. I feel like they may get a deal done with Chase by the end of August.

Here is Ari Meirov claiming that the Bengals and Chase's are in talks on a new deal. I assume that Meirov, like a lot of sports reporters, is getting his info from the agent. He feels like the deal will probably get done before the start of the regular season.

I’d be happy as hell - but also shocked. Would break a lot of precedent in terms of 3rd year first round receivers getting that deal done and the guaranteed money it would take. I imagine Jamarr would have to take a lot of concessions this year to get it done in terms of guarantees.

He has “to feed his family”

Paid $30M+ guaranteed on signing and earns another $5M this year. He's refusing to do jumping jacks because... Why? Was he clamped to a car battery and forced to sign the contract he's playing under or what is the complaint exactly. Did Pumpkin forge his signature?

Same goes for Hendrickson. Refusing to honor a current contract would not inspire me to offer a new one more to their liking.

Ja'Marr has no choice but to honor the already signed contract and play under those terms for the next 2 years.

But what he wants is an extension added on to that, with the large signing bonus that comes with it, giving him life-changing financial security against injury.

Because he's a Hall of Fame talent he can make this demand. And if the Bengals are smart and want to win the Super Bowl this season, they will give in.

In all honesty…should any of we scruffy mortals actually care what his “life-changing financial security against injury” is? It isn’t yours or my “financial security”.
