RETURNING:

#9 - Carson Palmer (USC) - at a press conference in June 2011, after stating that he did not expect Palmer to play for Cincinnati in 2011, Bengals president Mike Brown said there were no plans to trade Palmer. After Palmer did not report to training camp, he was placed on the reserve/did not report list on 7/29/11. He was traded to the Raiders on 10/18/11 for a 2012 first-round draft pick and a 2013 second-round draft pick.

 

#5 - Jordan Palmer (UTEP) - played in preseason Game #1 at Lions; released 8/26/11 after 3rd preseason game.

 

#8 - Dan LeFevour (Central Michigan) - played in 3 of the 4 preseason games; waived and signed to Practice Squad 9/4/11 prior to regular season; released 9/6/11 in favor of Zac Robinson.

#12 - Mohamed Sanu (Rutgers) - drafted in 3rd Rd. as WR; went 1-of-1 for 73 yards and a TD; lined up at QB in shotgun formation on the first play from scrimmage Week 3 at Redskins, throwing a 73-yard TD pass to A.J. Green, with Dalton split wide right. The NFL apparently does not count this as him starting at QB. While Sanu would throw (and complete) 4 more passes in his Bengals career, including an 18-yd TD pass to Andy Dalton in 2014, this was his only pass where he lined up at QB. He also ran the ball after lining up at QB. In Sanu's Bengals career, he finished 5-of-5 for 177 yards passing, with 2 TDs for a perfect Passer Rating of 158.3. He also ran the ball 26 times for 153 yards and 2 TDs. Sanu became a free agent 3/9/16.

No quarterbacks were invited to the 2013 local players' workout, though private workouts were held in March with E.J. Manuel at Florida St. and with Ryan Nassib at Syracuse.

* QB Ryan Williams (Miami, FL) had reportedly signed with the Bengals on 5/2/15, but was later omitted from the Bengals' official list of Undrafted Free Agents attending rookie mini-camp. I was unable to find any evidence that he participated in rookie mini-camp, but was also unable to find any explanation for his absence and why his signing appears to have fallen through.

After starting the first 9 games winless, Dalton was benched heading into the Bengals' bye week in favor of Finley. After 3 more losses, Dalton returned as the starter for the rest of the season. He was released 4/30/20 after the Bengals selected Joe Burrow #1 overall in the 2020 Draft.

 

#6 - Jeff Driskel (Florida/Louisiana Tech) - played in first 2 preseason games, going 13-of-27 for 136 yards, with 1 INT (QPR 47.8); he did not play in the remaining 2 preseason games due to injury and was placed on IR following the preseason. He was subsequently released 9/11/19.

 

ARRIVING:

#___ - Brad Kaaya (Miami, FL) - claimed 2/11/19; contract expired (not tendered) 3/12/19. I would've been skeptical that Kaaya (pronounced KYE-uh) ever suited up for the Bengals until discovering the team headshot (below) of him wearing some sort of Bengals jersey.

 

#5 - Ryan Finley (N.C. State) - drafted in 4th Rd; played in 3 games, all as starter, following the bye week, going 0-3; went 41-of-87 for 474 yards, 2 TDs & 2 INTs. Was replaced by Dalton as starter Week 13 for the rest of the season.

#5 - Ryan Finley (N.C. State) - played in 5 games, including 1 start, a Week 15 upset win over Pittsburgh on MNF after Allen was injured the previous week vs Dallas; went 17-of-32 for 164 yards, 1 TD & 2 INTs; traded 3/19/21 to Texans.

 

#7 - Jake Dolegala (C. Connecticut St.) - released 9/4/20 prior to beginning of regular season.

 

ARRIVING:

#9 - Joe Burrow (Ohio St./LSU) - drafted in 1st Rd. (#1 overall); started first 10 games, going 2-7-1, before suffering season-ending knee injury at Washington in Week 11; went 264-of-404 for 2,688 yards, 13 TDs & 5 INTs. Finished with 3rd-lowest Interception Pct. (1.2%) in NFL behind only Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes (1.0% each).

#9 - Joe Burrow (Ohio St./LSU) - started first 16 games, going 10-6; went 366-of-520 for 4,611 yards, 34 TDs & 14 INTs. Named NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Led NFL in Completion Pct. (70.4) and Yards Per Attempt (8.9). Burrow's 108.3 Passer Rating was second only to Aaron Rodgers' 111.9 QPR. Was sacked (51 times) more than any other QB.

 

#8 - Brandon Allen (Arkansas) - played in 6 games, including starting Week 17 loss at Browns; went 17-of-34 for 149 yards, with 2 TDs.

 

#6 - Kyle Shurmur (Vanderbilt) - played in all 3 preseason games, going 34-of-50 for 337 yards, 1 TD & 1 INT (QPR 85.2); released 8/31/21 after last preseason game.

 

ARRIVING:

#___ - Collin Hill (Colorado St./South Carolina) - apparently signed as an undrafted free agent 5/2/21 after the NFL Draft. However, I was unable to find any evidence that he participated in rookie mini-camp (May 14-16). Shurmur and Dungey appear to have been the only QBs at the rookie mini-camp. I was also unable to find any explanation for Hill's absence and have not been able to find any record of his being released by the Bengals.
