On Monday, head coach Zac Taylor announced that Sample suffered a torn Achilles and will miss the upcoming season. The injury happened at a recent practice, where the fourth-year defensive end was carted off the field after going down in obvious pain and being unable to get up under his own power. This is a brutal development for Sample, who was a fourth-round pick by way of Tulane in the 2021 NFL Draft. Since then, he’s become a valuable backup in the Bengals’ defensive line rotation, primarily playing on the end while occasionally playing inside. Making matters worse for Sample is this was a contract year, so he’s going to hit free agency for the first time while coming off an injury that wiped out an entire season.
