53 yards should absolutely NOT be an issue. It never has been. Again, you can’t plan for the holder dropping the ball. Even if the kick had been from 30 yards the result is the same if the holder fucks up the snap.

Could he have licked on third, covered the fumble and tried a bit longer on 4th? That was always a choice in regulation time.

 

With a rookie holder, I was surprised they didn't kick on 3rd down since they were clearly not interested in advancing the ball further.

A very good and sober question to ask, I do believe I've seen that before (kicking on third down) and this was the reasoning given.
