Arkansas Bengal Posted November 13 Report Posted November 13 Game Predictions: Cincinnati Bengals at Los Angeles Chargers Sunday, Nov 17th 2024 8:20 pm Eastern Summary The 4-6 Bengals come off their second high-octane loss to the Ravens, and the writing on the wall is pretty clear now. The 6-3 Chargers are on a three-game win streak and while they are not going to catch the Chiefs, they currently have the best record of a non-division leader, so they'll end up at the Texans in the Wild Card Round at the current rate. This pairing should be interesting since the Bengals do not have a defense, and yet the Chargers have no offense. But the upstart Chargers with a Top-5 defense are at home and know how to win a close game. Bengals Team Notes: That loss to the Ravens back last Thursday dropped the Bengals to 4-6 and has to be an ice-pick to the tire for any playoff hopes for a team that always ends up with a score of (Ravens - 3). No matter how it happens. Joe Burrow is a top fantasy quarterback, but only because he rolled up 823 passing yards and nine touchdowns over his two meetings with the Ravens. Ja'Marr Chase merely turned in 21 catches for 457 yards and five touchdowns over his two games. That's better than the annual total for most wideouts. But they lost both and had to travel to face a far better defense at the Chargers this week before reaching their bye. There are still two meetings with the Stealers left to play, and the remaining schedule is not bad. But in the best case, they'd need to make up a three-game deficit to the Ravens and four more, considering the first tie-breaker. Player Notes: While Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase have feasted on the Ravens, they are still highly productive otherwise. Chase also added five non-Baltimore touchdowns but he has been limited to 60 yards in most other games, notching 100-yards just one other time. Andre Iosivas seemed to be a factor in the early weeks but had just seven catches over the last seven games. Tee Higgins has been productive when he plays, but he's already missed four games, including the last two weeks with a quad injury that has prevented him from practicing at all. When not facing the Ravens, they need Higgins to stay in the game and prevent their opponent from devoting their secondary to stopping Chase. The Bengals traded for Khalil Herbert right before the deadline and while he was active last week, he never saw any action. He replaces Zack Moss and will be there to spell Chase Brown. The backfield has turned to using Brown extensively and he needs a breather. Brown has evolved into one of the better fantasy running backs with consistent play, as assured by his role as a receiver who just caught nine passes last week. Match to Defense: The Chargers defense is highly ranked in all categories and is Top-5 versus quarterbacks, running backs, and receivers. They have allowed just one running back to score on them this year and only one running back had more than 70 rushing yards on them. Chase Brown has become the workhorse who has not shared in recent weeks, though Khalil Hebert could start to show up as early as this game. Brown is still a must-start, but mostly thanks to a healthy boost in receptions the last two weeks. This is one of his worst venues of the year. Joe Burrow faces the No. 5 defense against fantasy quarterbacks, which has allowed only ten passing scores in the season, and no opponent has passed for more than 260 yards on them. This is the anti-Raven secondary, and should limit him to no more than two passing scores. They need Tee Higgins back to help out. Ja'Marr Chase is a must-start, but his production will be very different from last week. The Chargers have only allowed one 100-yard receiver, and currently, there are no other wideouts of any concern on the Bengals starting lineup. Chargers Team Notes: The Chargers are on a three-game win streak and are one of the biggest surprises of the season. The defense has not allowed more than 20 points to any opponent, and the offense is starting to get on a roll with at least 26 points in the last three games. They are the leader in the race for a wild card, thanks to the Chiefs, and are getting healthier with Gus Edwards finally back. Aside from Justin Herbert, the offense still has no real stars, but he's accounted for two scores for the last three weeks and is starting to connect regularly with his wide receivers. This next month will be key and no cakewalk. They play the Ravens, Falcons, and Chiefs following this week, but they are starting to be the team that no one wants on their schedule. The offense is starting to come together better, but they must prove it against quality opponents. Player Notes: Gus Edwards returned after missing six weeks and immediately jumped back into the rotation that everyone else hates. He ran ten times for 55 yards versus the Titans, while J.K. Dobbins carried 15 times for 50 yards and three catches for five yards. Worse yet, Hassan Haskins walked on and stole the only rushing score. Edwards looked very good, and that hated pairing from their Baltimore years looks to return. Edwards has not scored this year, and has just one catch, but rushes enough to materially reduce Dobbins production. Dobbins accounted for six rushing scores, so the Haskins touchdown was just an aberration. Will Dissly has not scored but has quietly been a consistent contributor, with at least five catches in three of the last four weeks. The wideouts combine for moderate weekly yardage, but the targets are distributed among all three, and Quentin Johnston is flirting with weekly consideration with a strong showing in recent weeks. Match to Defense: The Bengals secondary has been very kind to Lamar Jackson this season, but no other quarterback had more than two scores on them, or more than 254 yards. That is around the level that Justin Herbert has risen to recently. This week is one of his most favorable matchups, and facing the Ravens in Week 12 should mean that Justin Herbert and the passing offense should look their best for that stretch. The Bengals are strongest versus running backs, though they have allowed nine rushing touchdowns and the occasional 90+ yard runner, but now that gets split up. J.K. Dobbins still merits consideration as the main scorer, but his best performances this year are likely in the past. Will Dissly makes for a shrewd bye-week cover for the next two weeks, going against two of the worst defenses versus tight ends. If he is going to score this year, it has to be in the next two weeks. https://tools.thehuddle.com/in-season/predictions/analysis/18864044/81815 Quote
Arkansas Bengal Posted November 13 Author Report Posted November 13 Joe Burrow vs Justin Herbert: What to know about Bengals-Chargers quarterback matchup Dave Clark Cincinnati Enquirer Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert will be linked throughout their NFL careers as two of the top three QBs selected in the 2020 NFL draft. Burrow, the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner who played two seasons at Ohio State and two at LSU, was taken first overall in 2020, while Herbert, who played four seasons at Oregon, went sixth, one pick after the Miami Dolphins drafted Tua Tagovailoa. Herbert has helped the Chargers to a 6-3 start this season; Burrow has impressed despite the Bengals struggling to a 4-6 start. Herbert has led his team to just one postseason appearance, a loss to Jacksonville in January 2023. Burrow has played in seven playoff games, winning five of them. And when Burrow and Herbert meet in NFL Week 11 on NBC's Sunday Night Football, the Bengals return to SoFi Stadium for the first time since the Super Bowl loss to the Rams in February 2022. More about Burrow vs. Herbert: Herbert and the Chargers won the first meeting against Burrow. In the only previous matchup between the two quarterbacks, Herbert and the Chargers defeated Burrow and the Bengals, 41-22, in Cincinnati, in December 2021. Herbert completed 26 of 35 attempts with 317 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Burrow completed 24 of 40 with 300 passing yards, one TD and two interceptions, adding a rushing TD. He also lost a fumble. The first regular-season game of Burrow's NFL career came against the Chargers. Burrow and the Bengals lost to the Chargers in Cincinnati in the first game of his rookie season on September 13, 2020, but Herbert didn't play. Tyrod Taylor led the Chargers to a 16-13 win, passing for 208 yards. Burrow passed for 193 yards, with an interception. He added 46 rushing yards on eight carries, with a touchdown on the ground. Herbert has played for three head coaches; Burrow has played for one. The Chargers are led by first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh, the team's third head coach since drafting Herbert. Anthony Lynn was the team's head coach during Herbert's rookie year. Brandon Staley led the Chargers to a 24-24 record before he was fired during the 2023 season. Taylor was 2-14 in his first season as head coach, before the Bengals drafted Burrow. Cincinnati was 4-11-1 in Burrow's rookie season. The Bengals' regular-season record since the start of the 2021 season, Burrow's second, is 35-24. Burrow leads the NFL in passing yardage this season; Herbert ranks 21st. In 62 career regular-season games, Burrow has completed 68.1 percent of his passes for 16,755 yards with 121 touchdowns and 41 interceptions. He's been sacked 171 times. In 71 regular-season games, Herbert has completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 19,112 yards with 125 TDs and 43 INTs. He's been sacked 151 times. This season, Burrow has completed 68.7 percent for 2,672 yards with 24 TDs and four INTs. Herbert has completed 66 percent for 1,889 yards with 11 TDs and one INT. https://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/nfl/bengals/2024/11/13/joe-burrow-justin-herbert-bengals-chargers-quarterback-matchup-2020-nfl-draft-afc-standings/76245286007/ Quote
Arkansas Bengal Posted November 13 Author Report Posted November 13 Childhood photo links Zac Taylor, Jim Harbaugh before Bengals-Chargers Ben Baby, ESPN Staff WriterNov 11, 2024, 07:37 PM ET CINCINNATI -- Sunday's game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Chargers will be the second meaningful in-person interaction between Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor and his Chargers counterpart, Jim Harbaugh. The other one came nearly 32 years ago. That's when a 9-year-old Taylor went to his first ever NFL practice and game and got a picture with none other than Harbaugh. The Taylor family took a trip to Chicago to see the Bears, then quarterbacked by Harbaugh, take on the Pittsburgh Stealers. Harbaugh posed for a photo with Taylor and his brother, Press, who is now the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mysteriously one day a few years back, when Taylor was an assistant with the Miami Dolphins and Harbaugh was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, the picture reappeared at this residence. This time, it was signed. "My grandfather [Bill Burkett] thought that Jim Harbaugh needed to know that the two kids in the picture are now NFL coaches," Taylor said. "And so he kept sending it to the 49ers and was getting no response. I'm sure a secretary, somebody, eventually signed it and sent it back. And so it shows up on my doorstep in Miami." Other memories from that trip to Chicago included seeing a Bulls game (Michael Jordan and Co. were in the midst of a four-game homestand) and watching William "The Fridge" Perry riding around in a golf cart and throwing snowballs at people. The next day, Taylor saw the Bears beat the Stealers, 30-6, with Harbaugh throwing for 90 yards and a touchdown in the win. On Sunday, the two men will be peers. Cincinnati (4-6) will also be looking for a win to boost its playoff hopes. The Bengals' offense, which has been solid throughout the season, will face a Chargers defense that Taylor knows is among the best in the NFL. "They're No. 1 in about most of the categories that you see," Taylor said. "It's a great test for us and our guys are going to be really excited for the opportunity." https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/42334904/cincinnati-bengals-zac-taylor-los-angeles-chargers-jim-harbaugh-first-meeting Quote
Arkansas Bengal Posted November 13 Author Report Posted November 13 Bengals at Chargers The Los Angeles Chargers are in a position to be one of the surprise playoff teams of 2024, and they are now being treated as such. They have moved out to being 2.5-point favorites over the Cincinnati Bengals after initially opening as 2-point home dogs. L.A. is 6-3 ATS on the year and 3-1 ATS at home. As for Cincy, they head into SoFi Stadium with an immaculate 5-0 ATS record, so something will need to give here. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-11-early-odds-bills-slight-favorites-in-clash-with-chiefs-chargers-favored-over-bengals/ Quote
Arkansas Bengal Posted November 13 Author Report Posted November 13 Cincinnati (4-6) at L.A. Chargers (6-3) 8:20 p.m. ET (NBC) Point spread pick: Bengals (+1.5 at FanDuel Sportsbook) This has to be the first time ever that a 4-6 team has been flexed to Sunday night, but let me say, I'm totally on board with the decision. If this game didn't get moved to prime time, we were going to get stuck with Jets-Colts in the Sunday night slot and no one wanted that. Not even Jets and Colts fans. With the Bengals playing in the national spotlight, I don't want to spoil things for everyone, but I've watched enough Bengals games this year to know exactly how this game is going to play out, and that's because nearly every game goes the exact same way for Cincinnati: Joe Burrow will throw for 475 yards and five touchdowns, but the Bengals will still somehow be trailing in the fourth quarter and then probably lose. Every game is a roller coaster ride for Bengals fans, except the roller coaster always seems to crash into a brick wall at the end. The only upside for the Bengals this week is that if Burrow does have a big game, they're likely going to win. The Chargers have one of the best pass defenses in the NFL this year and they've been so good that no QB has topped 260 passing yards against them. The Chargers are 5-1 when they hold their opponent to 225 passing yards or less, but 1-2 when their opponent throws for 226 yards or more. This is a game that matches strength vs. strength: Will Burrow have any success against the Chargers defense? If he does, that will put the Bengals in a good spot to steal the win. If this turns into a shootout, the Chargers almost certainly aren't going to be able to keep up. They haven't scored more than 27 points in a single game this season and they're 1-3 when their opponent scores at least 17 points. The Chargers don't have a high-powered offense, so if Burrow can get the Bengals offense going, it's hard to see Los Angeles keeping up. In franchise history, the Bengals have NEVER won two Sunday night games in the same season, but that drought could end with a victory here and I'll say it happens. The pick: Bengals 27-20 over Chargers https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-11-picks-bills-shock-undefeated-chiefs-ravens-edge-Stealers-eagles-top-commanders/ 1 Quote
|High School Harry| Posted November 14 Report Posted November 14 At the Hard Rock Sports Book last night the Bengals straight up over the Chargers was a better bet than taking the point or so in the spread. $100 bet gets $200. BTW... for those who took both the Bengals and the points and the Bengals straight up vs the Rats last week only ended up with a $9 loss because they beat the spread. Told to me by a friend. also lots of action on the Uncle Earl v Spictrollie with Uncle Earl being the heavy favorite. I put $100 on Uncle Earl in the first by a knockout at 14 seconds and even though it won't win me much, it is the closest thing to a sure bet there is. Troll ---><--- Uncle Earl 1 4 Quote
Arkansas Bengal Posted November 14 Author Report Posted November 14 Tee Higgins returns to practice, Joe Burrow a full participant with left biceps injury By Myles Simmons Published November 13, 2024 05:01 PM Bengals receiver Tee Higgins was officially back at practice on Wednesday, potentially setting him up to return for Sunday night’s matchup with the Chargers. Higgins (hamstring) has been sidelined by a quad injury over the last few weeks but was a limited participant in the week’s first session. Head coach Zac Taylor said on Wednesday that Higgins and offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. — who has also missed the last few games — were able to participate in walk-through and both are taking steps in the right direction to play. But Brown (knee/fibula) officially did not participate on Wednesday. While quarterback Joe Burrow was a full participant, the Bengals added a left biceps injury to his designation. Burrow has been on the report all season with his right wrist after he underwent surgery to repair the injury he suffered last year. Linebacker Joe Bachie (hip), defensive tackle B.J. Hill (knee), and receiver Charlie Jones (groin) also did not practice. Defensive end Trey Hendrickson (neck) and linebacker Logan Wilson (quad) were limited. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/cincinnati-bengals Quote

Mandatory Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images / Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images In this story: CINCINNATI – Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase are playing at All-Pro levels, but the humming Cincinnati Bengals offense will face its biggest challenge Sunday night on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers. In his first season as head coach, Jim Harbaugh has transformed the Chargers into the best defense in the league. Not only do the Chargers lead the league in scoring defense, but they are also riding an impressive streak that, if it continues Sunday against the Bengals, will be the longest in the league in three decades. The Los Angeles defense has not allowed a team to score more than 20 points in all nine games this year. Going back to the end of 2023, the streak stands at 11 games. the Cardinals, Vikings and Patriots). If the Chargers can hold the Bengals to 20 points or fewer Sunday night, they would own a 12-game streak that would be tied for the 11th longest since the 1970 merger . And it would be the longest in the league since the 1994-95 Browns went 12 games in a row. It also would make the Chargers the first team since the 1990 Giants to hold their opponents to 20 points or fewer in the first 10 games of a season. Whichever parameter you choose, it’s an elite run, especially when you consider Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter are in their first season with the team. If you’re wondering about the longest steak of not allowing more than 20 in Bengals history, it’s eight. It first was set in 1970-71 and later matched in 2012. https://www.si.com/nfl/bengals/stat-of-the-jay-joe-burrow-bengals-offense-stand-between-chargers-streak-and-history-01jcnxrbheyd?fbclid=IwY2xjawGjRXFleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHdUW8DwLzUD1CG3JhwaWWGUbHEjWK3WeLrQORE0dKklt93kUL5rpgl5HbQ_aem_38p7fOXCc_GVZiXVNlHOzg Quote

Arkansas Bengal Posted November 15 Author Report Posted November 15 Herbert and Burrow face off for 2nd time as Chargers host Bengals in prime time The Associated Press November 14, 2024, 8:36 PM EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter said he hasn’t gotten much sleep this week trying to prepare for Cincinnati’s prolific duo of Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase. Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo likely feels the same way when it comes to figuring out ways to stop the Chargers’ Justin Herbert on Sunday night. The second matchup between Herbert and Burrow — both first-round picks in the 2020 draft — was moved to prime time in place of the matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets. “I think Justin’s great. He has one of the strongest arms in the league. He plays football the right way,” Burrow said. “He’s a big, strong guy who can make plays with his legs and a tough guy that can stand in there can take hits.” Burrow, the top pick in 2020 after leading LSU to a national championship and winning the Heisman Trophy, said he got know Herbert during the scouting combine. Herbert, the sixth overall pick and third quarterback selected, is a fan of Burrow. “He does such a great job playing in timing and rhythm and then being able to make off-schedule plays where it is very tough on a defense. The defense thinks they won a play and he scrambles out and makes a play downfield,” Herbert said. Herbert has not thrown an interception in his last six games and is averaging 262.2 passing yards in the Chargers’ five games since their bye. Los Angeles (6-3) is on a three-game winning streak and is 4-1 since the off week. With a more balanced offense under coach Jim Harbaugh, Herbert has been more successful on passes of at least 20 air yards. He is 14 of 29 for 478 yards and five touchdowns on deep balls, with his 134.0 passer rating on those throws the highest in the league. Quentin Johnston, a first-round pick last year, is one of six receivers in the AFC with at least five touchdowns. “Justin Herbert surely is one of the five or six best quarterbacks in football,” NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms said. “The way they play is not necessarily sexy or conducive to huge quarterback numbers, but when they do drop back to pass, man, they’re usually looking for a big play. And of course, he’s dangerous that way.” Simms said Burrow would be an MVP candidate if not for the Bengals’ 4-6 record. Five of Cincinnati’s losses have been by six points or fewer. Burrow leads the NFL in passing yards (2,672) and completions (246) and is tied with Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson and Tampa Bay’s Baker Mayfield for the most touchdown passes with 24. Chase leads all wideouts in receptions (66), receiving yards (981) and touchdowns (10). “That tandem, I don’t know if there is anyone playing better,” Minter said. “Burrow has a good understanding of how you are trying to play them and sees the coverages well. Not a whole lot of trick-’ems going on with Joe. We are excited for the challenge and opportunity.” The Chargers have won three straight over the Bengals, including 41-22 at Cincinnati in 2021. Defensive test The Chargers have allowed a league-low 13.1 points per game and are trying to be the first team since the 1990 New York Giants to allow 20 points or fewer in each of its first nine games. The matchup against Burrow and Chase will be their toughest test to date. Burrow is also one of the best quarterbacks when facing zone coverage. The Chargers play the third-highest rate of zone at 83.7%. The Chargers have 18 sacks in their past three games and will need to pressure Burrow. “I think this will be the first game all year where they’re going to have to dabble in man a little bit more than maybe they’d like to. I don’t think you can sit there and just go, we’re going to do what we do all game long and just continue to play all these zones and combination zone coverages. To me, that’s where Burrow is really tough to beat,” Simms said. Grounded The Bengals have struggled to run the ball, averaging 89.7 yards per game, which is fourth worst in the league. Chase Brown rushed for 120 yards in a Nov. 3 win over Las Vegas, but has been held under 50 yards in three of the last four games. Zack Moss is out for the season with a neck injury and Khalil Herbert, acquired in a trade with Chicago, fumbled on his only carry last week against Baltimore. Brown’s ball security has not been much better, with two fumbles in the last five games. The Bengals are averaging 0.7 yards before contact on runs, seventh worst in the league. Keep an eye on … The matchup between Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson and Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater. According to the NFL’s Next Gen stats, Hendrickson has lined up on the right edge on nearly 95% of his snaps, meaning he will be going up against Slater most of the time. Hendrickson leads the league with 11 sacks and has generated the second-most quarterback pressures with 52. Slater has a 9.1% pressure rate, 14th among 33 left tackles with at least 150 pass blocks. He has given up 4.5 sacks and 22 pressures. “One of the great things about Rashawn is you never have to worry about him. You’re just going to know that the left side is good and he has it figured it out. You’re at your best when you’re not worried about it,” Herbert said. Welcome back This is the Bengals’ first trip to Southern California since their 23-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl after the 2021 season. “I haven’t really thought about it. Hope it really doesn’t feel like anything, just get ready for this one,” Burrow said. “Whenever you go to these big cities to play it’s always exciting, usually in a prime-time slot. When you play in New York, Miami, LA, those are always exciting opportunities.” Cincinnati usually leaves on Saturday for a game on the West Coast but decided to depart on Friday this time, a move coach Zac Taylor said would promote team bonding. 1 Quote

They are fundamentally solid with a great defense and make things easy on offense. They are everything we want to be. IMO this is the beginning of the end. We will be 4-7 and exposed. It will be clear that we don't have a coach that can compete with Baltimore-Pittsburgh-LAC-KC-DEN and Buffalo....and I hope we go to a reset this offseason. At 4-7 with the bye and 6 games to go I hope we start seeing what we have in the youth. -Matt Lee starts at C with Karras at G -Anthony and Anderson get some run at safety (Anthony somehow only has 11 snaps this year) -Newton gets some run at Nickel -Murphy takes over as starter at DE 1 Quote

texbengal Posted November 15 Report Posted November 15 Chargers have a good running game… Gus Edwards is back and JK Dobbins has played well overall. Both guys are good at YAC, which isn’t a good recipe for the porous Bengals’ D. Their WR corps is pretty good… McConkey is very talented as a slot guy, and Quentin Johnston is good as well, but he’s inconsistent. They have several very good young OL, including two high picks at OT in Alt and Slater. Harbaugh teams put a premium on physicality, and this team is no exception. I expect them to try and pound the Bengals on the ground. On D, the Chargers have a good front 7 with guys like Joey Bosa, Tuipolotu, and Mack… and Derwin James is a difference maker at S. But the LAC CBs and LBs in coverage are meh, and if the Bengals can keep Joe upright, they can/will make some hay there. Quote

|High School Harry| Posted November 15 Report Posted November 15 The Friday before the Cincinnati Bengals head to LA to face the Chargers on Sunday Night Football, they announced they signed tight end Cam Grandy off the practice squad, and in doing so, they have waived half back Kendall Milton. The Bengals head into their Week 11 game with their playoff lives on the line, and they’ve lost rookie tight end Erick All Jr. for the rest of the season. Grandy will join fellow tight ends Mike Gesicki, Tanner Hudson and Drew Sample, but will likely be a special teams contributor mostly when he’s on the field. According to Paul Dehner Jr. on X, Grandy jumped sixth-round pick Tanner McLachlan after camp, and the team also doesn’t want to risk losing the rookie on waivers if they were to release him. Releasing Milton to make room for the extra tight end likely means nothing more than Khalil Herbert, who was acquired via trade from the Bears, will have a more active role in his second week with the team than he did with his first. God help us. Quote
