I believe Duffner did quite a bit to supplement the personnel guys… watching film, doing zoom interviews, etc. and I saw clips of him working with the DL and LBs at practice. He was LB coach when Takeo and Simmons were drafted and I believe he was DC as well for a time. He left the Bengals and was in Jacksonville for a time, and came back. Cioffi was a DB (I think safeties?) coach in Cincinnati for a long time, back when Marvin was coaching. He left and worked for another team or two and came back. QC guys do a lot of different things… practice planning, film study, opponent scouting, involvement in practices, working upstairs during games, etc.. Report

Golden just said he was concentrating on preparing for Penn State, and he wasn't thinking about anything else right now. He could've just said NO, I'M NOT INTERESTED but instead chose not to do so. Golden was on Cincinnati's staff as LB coach when they went to the Super Bowl, and seemingly enjoyed his two seasons with the Bengals. Golden left to become a coordinator at Notre Dame. Does he have interest in being a coordinator at the pro level with an organization he is already familiar with? yes, forgot him. I’d imagine the Bengals are interested, if he is. He did a nice job with the LBs when he was coaching here. Report

Not that there is anything with discussion and direction…just not much new I find. Could just be me. Report

Suffice to say I have been on many boards over the years with Spicoli (and we’ve tangled a time or two)…and his knowledge of the game is superior. If he says something, you can damn well know it’s not just opinion. I agree. He has a lot to offer, being a dick isn't one of them. I wish he would just stick to the stuff he knows, as he used to be a good poster with good insights worth paying attention to, but for some reason lately he's been a jackass to everyone that disagrees or has different options about a football team. It's not necessary. Report

From my understanding, because ND isn't in a conference they don't have to share any money Just because they have more money doesn't mean Notre Dame is going to pay NFL salaries. They'll pay market rates, or maybe less if they are like most Catholic schools. Report

I guess it makes sense that the Bengals pay less than a big D1 school. My comment was about how Catholic Schools, and I assume ND, aren't going to pay more than they have to just because they have more money. I am aware of many examples where it's just the opposite. I would assume DCs at other big money schools make similar dough as Golden. Recruiting is a huge PITA. It takes a special kind of person to do it. Not sure how Golden fits in there. Report
January 13Jan 13 comment_1783703 FWIW Golden has been a head coach in college at Temple and Miami FL. For all we know he might want to be one again. To me, the biggest obstacle in the d-coordinator search won’t be money but rather the enormity of the job to turn around one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Report

Some guys get off on that kind of challenge. It would be a pretty good path to getting to be a head coach. Report

I don't think anyone is expecting a top 5 defense in 2025. My view is that the job would be attractive based on middle of the pack being good enough, given the potent offense. If the team lets the DC hire his choice for assistants and commits resources, both draft pick and cap to that side of the ball, it would be very attractive. The challenge would be to elevate the large group of younger drafted guys to play together and raise their level. I'd think a lot of guys would be up for that challenge. Report
January 13Jan 13 comment_1783730 With all of the rules basically against defenses, I will wonder just what kind of new/cool/innovative scheme can be thought up to at least slow down offenses? Is there anyone out there with such a baffling scheme? Report
January 13Jan 13 comment_1783736 At the college level, Jim Knowles is known for his schematic versatility. He's referred to as a "mad scientist", ala Lou. But he also has top talent to use at OSU and makes more than the Bengals are likely to offer. In the NFL, there are guys like Vic Fangio, Brian Flores, and DeMeco Ryans known for their schemes, not to mention Steve Spagnuolo. Report
