This is why I want us to double dip at guard, 1 day 1/2 pick and another in the late rounds (or earlier ffs). Burrow IS the franchise and protecting him is job 1. What do you think our record would have been if Burrow had blown out a knee in the Pats game? We would probably be Cleveland with a worse defense.

Maybe a new scheme will help Cappa and Volson, maybe not. I fear Cappa may be a victim of time, but Volson may be salvageable as a backup. Wasn't he a tackle in college? Maybe try him tghere?

I'd like to sign a guard in free agency (not sure who) and draft two. We need to build depth as well. Cody Ford is a nice "break glass in case of emergency" piece and we'll see how Matt Lee develops since Karas won't be here forever.

A thought may be to move Karras into a guard and insert Lee at C..

Draft Ratledge for the other G spot.

So we have the 2 worst guards in the NFL.

Tell me again about how nobody can build a good OL when we've been bottom of the league for years and keep fielding the worst linemen at their position.  If everyone is bad we're still consistently the worst.  Quit making excuses for them FFS.

It's almost like the positions that the Bengals don't value as much are the ones that hurt us the most on both sides of the ball. (G, and S)

Why would he think Herbert is better?

Better arm, better mobility, better physical attributes overall. Also, hubby thinks that Burrow benefits from having great receivers.

But what Herbert doesn't have, and I have told my husband this from day 1, is that "It" factor that separates the very good from the great. Burrow has that "It" factor. That's what tips the scales in Burrow's favor.

Commonly referred to as possessing the "Clutch Gene"

Some QBs have it, some don't.

Joe is a better processor of what defenses are doing. Ill take that 11 times out of 10.

This. In the top 4 rounds we need to see 2 IOL and 1 DE and 1 interior DL. That is the approach I would have.

Just a reminder that Joe Thuney is from the Cincinnati area and comes from a long family line of Bengals fans. When he reached free agency he expressed interest in playing for the Bengals where his family could watch him play every home game, but Cincinnati lowballed him in contract talks. The Bengals front office has never considered offensive guard to be a premium position...as Joe Burrow has learned the hard way since he has been in the league.

2. Joe Thuney, Kansas City Chiefs

Thuney has cemented himself as one of the NFL's best guards, providing flawless protection for Patrick Mahomes over the past three seasons and earning himself first- and second-team All-Pro nods in the past two seasons. Thuney’s 74.6 PFF overall grade in 2023 ranked ninth among guards, and his 83.4 pass-blocking grade led the position.

Thuney is an adequate run-blocker, but he has made a name for himself in pass protection. He allowed just a 4.6% pressure rate in 2023, and his 88.8 pass-blocking grade over the past two years is better than that of every other guard in the NFL.

Whether they get IOL help through free agency or the draft, I just hope the new OL coach prefers normal sized NFL guards who excel at pass blocking. No more of these non-athletic 6-7 OGs who can't hold the pocket against bull rushers. Burrow, like most great QBs, would much prefer to get pressure off the edge rather from right up the middle where he can't step up.

We do need better athleticism on the O-line. Mims is probably the only one who is above average for that. But I want guards who can run block so the team doesn't have to be in the shotgun on 3rd and 2. Combine that with a strong RB who is good at short yardage and we'd have a more balanced offense. That would benefit the defense too. Our QB and WRs are our competitive advantage but we're too pass happy currently. Even if Joe wants to be in 5 wide every down, we shouldn't let him take the hits.

Volson and Cappa are bad at both run and pass blocking. If we add a couple veteran middle of the road guys, it would be a significant upgrade overall.

Because he led the Chargers to the playoffs once.  Duh.

Cutting Cappa would result in less chance of a dead QB compared to a manageable dead cap money amount

poll 100 bengals fans and front offices and how many do you think choose Sewell over Chase?

Hard to say.  There were quite a few here that wanted Sewell and I am sure Goff would chose him over Chase and our Oline. Not that Sewell would fix the entire Oline.

And the reality is the that Joe Burrow taking every snap at QB this year was kind of a miracle.

Great take. The number of formations we could employ with a short running game would greatly benefit the team in every aspect.

So 8 extra mil to sign Tee..

Would Gesicki be worth 7.5 on open market?

Would mgt go that high?

All, Sample, Hudson and McLaughlin is a full room.

They won't cut Pratt..7.5 per is a good deal.

Gesicki may well get 7.5 on the open market. All is likely to start on PUP. Hudson seems likely to return on a cheap contract. Grandy should be back too. It's a shame we didn't see more from McLachlan but if he's behind Grandy for depth, that's not a good sign for him.

Not sure how many scrimmage snaps Grandy got overall, but he ended up with really good PFF blocking grades.
