The fact the Chase deal last year was killed by thge teams lack of committmnet to guaranteed monies is puzzling. Teams, I believe, no longer have to Put this money aside in trust so it is simply a guarantee of payment in the future.  And the league guarantees revenue to each team in the future. It is a wash. The ONLY real affect is if the player is injured or is not performing then you are still hit on the cap and cant get out of the deal. But so what? Every team does this.

Why? Is it back to the “he’ll hold out” or “tag and trade” fantasy again?

No, the deadline for an extension with Tee is July 15. But if we can't get it done by the draft, it doesn't seem likely there will be a meeting of minds by July 15. Tee would be here for 1 more season (assuming he signs the tender). Unless you think Burton or Iosivas are good replacements for Tee, we'd be looking for a receiver in the draft. That doesn't necessarily mean in round 1 but at some point. This isn't a good WR draft (or free agency either). Pickings will be slim after round 3.

The inability to sign core players to contract extensions affects the entire team in a negative way. No way to prove it but if the Bengals had been able (willing?) to sign Chase to an extension before the start of last season, I firmly believe they win the home opener against New England and make the playoffs. Every player on the roster are aware of the Bengals front office reputation around the NFL. This isn't just about extending Higgins, it's also about changing the narrative the Bengals have dogging them every year.

Yes, once the Jefferson deal was done, they had the template for Chase. They could have just tacked on a 4 year extension to the 2 remaining years on his rookie deal with Ja'Marr getting a signing bonus last year. Higgins publicly said he would have taken the Pittman deal (3 years, 70 mil in total). That would have been a bargain for the team. Now he'll cost 27 mil or more. Chase will be slightly more than Jefferson but not 40.

Strong quote sir

Their inability may lye in the guaranteed money.

The team is with 4 bil plus on paper.

The guaranteed money in their payroll accounts lacks many teams to reach agreements.

They'll sign Chase , roll with Tee this yr at 26 mil ,and

see what's happens offensive wise.

Improve the amount interior and the team could average 30 pts per.

Golden's job is to take that total and give up less per.

Exciting season about to unfold..

Cash isn't a problem for the team. They don't like to spend and resent it when other teams give void years to spend above the cap. But the fundamental fact is that while they are cheap on things they don't have to spend on like coaching salaries and hiring more scouts, they have to spend a certain amount under the CBA. They have ample funds to do so and go well above the cap in cash outlays. Jake Liscow calculated that they spend about 8% more than the cap on average since the 2011 CBA that instituted the rookie wage scale. If they follow that pattern, they would be spending a little over 300 mil in cash this year for players. They currently have about 180 mil committed to the current roster so there should be at least 120 mil in cash outlays coming for 2025. Bengals gross revenues for 2024 were 529 million per Statista. That's about half of the Cowboys but plenty enough to sign whoever they can fit under the cap.

hubbard and rankins dont have shit to do with shit.

i dont think it is... seems like a farse to seem like we require two top wr weapons with joe at QB. the problems occur when the Wr is out at the last second fucking the week of prep and gameplan. we are arguably the best WR in the sport and possibly the best QB in the sport, needing more weapons is a big wild.

Id say signing Mike G would be a requirement at that point, but spending high draft captial especially in a WR poor draft, is a bad plan and an unnecessary one. IMO

that sure is a strange way of saying "if chase wasnt a fucking asshole and holding out with two fucking years left on his deal, even holding the team hostage until the MORNING of the game, they could have won..."

It's a lot easier to re-sign Higgins after the Hubbard and Rankins cap hits are cleared. They could spend the money at other positions, most likely D-line, but I doubt they are going after Milton Williams or Josh Sweat.

Burrow would still be great with Iosivas as WR2 and Gesicki as WR3. But having Higgins is a cheatcode in that he's a tough matchup for an opponent's CB2. He's usually in single coverage and can reliably win contested catches even if not open.

Arguendo, let's just say July 15 comes and goes with no new deal. You still have him for 2025 (he will not refuse $26M by sitting out). Why should there be an emphasis on another WR for the current year? No, neither Burton or Iosivas are good replacements.

I see no reason to worry about another WR for 2025. You roll with what you have--even better if Gesicki is brought back--and concern yourself with 2026 when it arrives.

Agree

Let's worry about 2025 for now.

Because if he plays on the tender this year, he'll be gone next year. That's true whether he has a great season or a bad one. Maybe Burton or Iosivas take a step up but it might behoove the team to find a successor this year who has a year with Burrow under his belt and is ready to step into a starting role. If we wait until next year, we're either shopping mid to upper tier WRs in free agency or using an earlier pick to make sure we get a top prospect. If Burton had had a great first year, I doubt the team would have tagged Tee again this year (unless it was for tag and trade purposes).

Let's sign Tee to a 3 or 4 year deal and be set at WR. But if our top free agent refuses to sign an extension (or the team refuses to offer a fair deal), then that reflects poorly on the Bengals management.

Saw this on TV:  Last year, the Bengals were 8-4 WITH Tee…and 1-4 WITHOUT

It would be interesting to see Jamar’s stats in games with Tee vs. without Tee.

Burton is a hopeless head case, and Iosivas is likely as good as you are going to see him.

I see that you did say that this prospective WR for this season does not have to be a first day selection. Agree. But, they are once again going to be throwing darts at the wall with anyone 3rd round and beyond…so I reckon it would be as broad as it is long whether they venture into these waters now or next season.

It absolutely matters this season, as do Ja'Marr & Trey.  Last season never even got started in part because of all the contract drama.  They need to put all that to bed before training camp opens or it's going to be a distraction once again.  Those 3 aside, the rest of the team (& everyone else) are waiting to see if this franchise is going to be one that pays exceptional players or continues to seek cheaper alternatives instead.

Perfectly stated. The entire league is looking at the Bengals and if they screw this up, there is no turning back. It will be disastrous from a PR and culture standpoint. Frankly, if Pumpkin can’t sign off on this, Tobin should resign, what would be the point?

Of course. My point was the backfill players at WR, not Uno/Tee.

To actually consider psycho Burton and Iosivas as replacements, should never happen. Same for the next 3rd and 6th round crapshoots
