I think he will make so much money that it's not worth considering

Maybe.

His production since a pro hasn't stood out like some thought

But yeah he'll be too expensive for what he brings

Bengals shouldn't rule anyone out for cost. The team typically carries 10 DL on the 53 man roster.

We'll return Hendrickson, Murphy, Jackson, Jenkins, and Johnson. We'll probably cut Rankins and Hubbard and could lose free agents Hill, Ossai, and Tufele.

So between the draft and free agency we're looking for a couple of DEs and 3 DTs who are upgrades on our departing underachievers. It's a good draft for D-linemen so we might use our 1st and 2nd round picks there. But it would be nice to have flexibility there and fill as many needs as possible in free agency, which is also deep on the D-line.

I doubt we shop top shelf but we could afford it if the team desires to do so. It would probably mean backloading the extensions for Chase, Higgins, and Hendrickson which seems to be out of the family's comfort zone. We could without much trouble afford to give Josh Sweat and Milton Williams each a 4/80 contract with 40 mil guaranteed. That would let us go into the draft looking for upgrades in the back 7 or even on offense. We'd still need to sign a couple more D-linemen for depth but could also draft 1 or 2 more.

Thoughts

1-Hubbard should be gone

2-Hendrickson extended for a couple years, if it goes over 23-24M I am out

3-Murphy still has a chance to start balling out, doesn't get a lot of sacks but has flashed

4-Ossai I would love back but is that a real upgrade? He finished the season strong with 5.5 sacks. How much is too much? He's still very young

5-I'm still very high on Ced Johnson, he showed well in limited snaps,

6-I'd invite Sample back on a 1 year min deal.

7-Thomas and Johnson are back for camp

8-If you just add 1 veteran is that ok?

  1. Khalil Mack-Consistent pass rush scores are great, Run D good, 15h and 6 sacks last year, is 34
  2. Malcolm Koonce is coming off a dead year because of a torn ACL, 8sacks and 17H in 2023, just 27, he’d be my target, he’s only 6-2 250 which is small for us, I think you get him cheap on a 1-2 year deal and he makes an impact
  3. Derek Barnett-Barnett played for the Texans on a 1 year deal last year and had 5 sacks and 7hurries.
  4. Onwuzurike-27 DT and LE size, 13 hurries and 1.5sacks
  5. Sweat-He’s 28 and coming off a Super Bowl, 8s and 15 hurries, 64 career starts
  6. Young-26 and up and down in his career but solid the last 2 years, I think his contract will be too large but if not he’d be solid
  7. Odeyingbo-Just 25, 17hurries and 3 sacks, 6’6 size is what we love
  8. Preston Smith-32 already, but a solid year in Pitt, 6h, 4.5sacks
  9. Dante Fowler-Wish we had him before, he’s 31, cost just 3.25M last year, 10.5sacks, 12h. I’d love him as well
  10. Golston-Just 27, 8hurries and 5.5 sacks to go with 56 tackles
  11. Taylor-28, up and down productive pass rusher, 9 hurries and 3sacks
  12. Deitrich Wise-Coached by Montgomery in NEP, 31, Team Captain, Size we want, 8 hurries 5 sacks last year, he makes a ton of sense.
  13. Carl Lawson-Well well well, maybe he comes back? Productive year last year with 5sacks and 15 hurries
  14. Ogbah-6 sacks in each of the last 2 years, not great pff scores this year outside of run d`
  15. Anthony Nelson-13hurries and 4 sacks, 6’7 271 is the size we want
  16. Ojulari-Only 25, 10 hits and 6 sacks last year
  17. Pat Jones-27, 12hits, 7 sacks bad pff scores,
  18. Matt Judon-Already 33 but productive in his age, 9hurries and 55 sacks last year.

Rankins was cut yesterday.   My guess is they're trying to renegotiate something with Hubbard but I'd rather have Hill & Ossai back for what he's likely going to cost them even if he takes a discount.  Could prob afford Tufele, too, if no one displaces him in training camp.

Yes, the team can afford to keep the band together, but why? What wasn't good enough last year isn't going to improve with age. If it were up to me, I'd extend Hendrickson, keep the guys on rookie contracts and look to replace last year's underachievers. Turnover doesn't have to be bad.

well.

with a new scheme, calls, expectations, and new coaching staff its very possible the production of some young players improves.

no one wants to bring EVERYONE back, but if Ossai can play a different role and use his athleticism for Goldens system there isnt any reason to not try to bring him back.

the odds of finding 20 new players on the team that are all improvements seems unlikely. bringing back role players whose roles, with new system, may fit their skillset better, make sense to keep around.

the "we dont have to keep anyone" mindset isnt always that realistic.

The point is that a number of players on last year's defense, especially veterans not only played poorly but were bad values as well. I don't care if Bachie or Sample come back or not but Hill, Rankins, Hubbard, Pratt, and Stone all underperformed. Dehner's piece today makes it sound like Volson will be around at least until training camp and they're hoping he wins the starting LG job again. That's the wrong way to go but unsurprising for a front office that is maladaptive.

:lmao:

The same way they "hoped" Jonah would win the RT job by giving him no serious competition for the spot.  Is Volson dating one of the family? Does he have compromising photos?

Yeah, I don't get it either. Volson costs about double what Ford played for last year and was benched for Ford. They seem to be hoping the new o-line coach is a miracle worker and revives Cordell's career. That's fine if it happens but isn't the way to bet and not replacing Volson with a better option would be GM malpractice.

why are you worried about what PDJ says? his only "source" is a PR person, hes been around that long and doesnt have any real contacts becuase he is a fucking dumbass. He has no information that isnt given to all media, ever. he doesnt even have agent conenctions, which is almost impossible. I HAVE AGENT CONNECTIONS and i dont even live in that fucking state.

as for the rest.. you can lump everyone on defense into one pot. yes many guys underperformed, but theyll have to sort through the ones that could be age/injury (hubbard, possible scheme (Stone), where they are worth a spot on the roster this year (Hill) if at all, can hill be th starting DT? probalby fucking not.. can he take 4 mil a year to be a depth/rotation guy? sure. Does hubbard want to take a giant pay cut to be a rotation guy? sure im down.. do they think stone can play a real role? if so is that role worth his current pay?  Rankins gotta fucking go and everyone has said he will. Pratt gotta go, and seems they told him to find a home or he will be dropped, no one else on earth requests a trade in February unless they were told to do so.

lots of changes gotta happen, but probably not as many as everyone thinks. a healthy hill turner and a less complex scheme related issue mess and we are probably the 22nd rated defense and win 11 games.

so we are re0inventing the wheel here. you can probably add 2-3 rotation or better free agents and 2 day one starter or rotation draft picks.. but i much prefer, money willing of course, dropping the lowest talent guys, and dropping down the starter guys worth keeping to smaller roles, and inserting a mix of new fresh young talent and free agents..

Golden cant stop knobbing Wilson so his job is def safe. Pratt may as well not exist to him.

He also talked highly of Wilson and Davis in the CB room. i almost expect no CB changes at this point unless there is a veteran depth peice.

Dehner's job isn't to be first with breaking news, there's X for that. Agent connections can tell you if a player is open to extending his current deal or what teams a free agent has offers from and is considering. But they can't tell you why the Bengals defense fell apart last year or whether the Colts are willing to trade a 7th rounder for Pratt.

Rankins is already gone and Hubbard should be right behind him. We should move on from Hill. He wasn't terrible but we need to upgrade from him and he wasn't worth his $10M deal last year. It's pretty remarkable how much the 2nd most expensive d-line in the NFL underachieved last year. I doubt the Bengals pursue a top tier free agent DT but even a couple of journeymen to rotate with Jackson and Jenkins would help. Then we could add a Walter Nolen if he's available or be set if we wait until day 3 for another DT.

IMO Murphy is better as a backup DE than a starter. Jackson and Jenkins are fine as rotational pieces but not someone we should make default starters. Pratt should be gone and we may be switching to a 4-3 so we need at least a couple of starting caliber LBs. It would be nice to have a CB1 but we'll probably have to get by with several CB2 level players. Battle looks likely to be the starting SS this year. But we should be looking to replace Stone if possible. Watts in round 2 seems like a good match if we get the chance.

You sure do whine a lot.

and this team could literally shit on your head and you'd thank them for the new hat.

Thanks for your input.   You could put me on "ignore" at any time, I'm pretty sure you know that, so by refusing to do so I can only surmise that your only purpose here is trolling..  Which your post history does nothing to refute.

How the fuck you talk about anyone else whining when all you post is some jock-sniffing fanboy "Leave Brittney Alone"-type nonsense, I'll never understand.  You seem a bit old to be playing with action figures but maybe some accommodations need to be made for you, IDK.  You do seem like the type that might get really excited about something like fire trucks.

I'm gonna go ahead and put you on ignore now since you're either too stupid to figure it out on your own or I just mean that much to you.  Either way, good luck with all that.  Offseason really brings out the weirdos around here.
