Some thoughts

1-We are reportedly going to play more 4-3 than 5-2 so that means less DL and more LBs

2-Wilson will be the heart of the LB crew

3-Pratt is probably a goner, the trade request was probably an attempt to keep his full salary before his release

4-Heyward and Njongmeta are both very solid guys with upside

5-I would love ADG back

6-I expect Bachie back

I'd believe "brain" but "heart"?  I like him as a player & maybe he's more of a take charge, leader-type behind the scenes but I'd prefer someone that's a little more vocal and energetic on the field.  That's not my impression of Wilson.

LB

  1. Zack Baun-Played under our new LB coach for 3 years in New Orleans, Had such a good year in Philly he’s likely to get a solid payday. Didn’t do much in New Orleans.
  2. Greenlaw-Weird injury kept him out of most of 24, Good numbers prior to the injury
  3. Devin Bush-I don’t know what he is. Just 27 and 61 career starts, solid athlete, connected to Kovacs, Former first rounder who wasn’t great in Pittsburgh, or Seattle but PFF loved him this year and he’s still young.
  4. Sherwood-Highest snap total prior to this year was 193---then he had 1063 this year, 16 starts, great pff numbers
  5. Stuard-Colts is just 26, coached by our TEs coach at Houston. Casey was the STs coach and he has 11 tackles as a Freshman. Hasn’t really done much in the pros. Was Mr Irrelevant. Incredible hair.
  6. Spillane is older but his last 2 years in Las Vegas have been great. Very solid pass rush scores and apparently that’s something we will be focused on.
  7. Perryman-Coached by Golden in Miami, Pass rush might be his best skill and we want that, He’s 32 but was team captain in LAC.
  8. Ernest Jones-Seem solid on the face but our closest allies in the coaching world seemed to be excited to get rid of him twice. He’s only 25 with 48 career starts though, and over 100 tackles 3 year in a row
  9. Devine Deablo is undersized, but just 27 and a playmaker
  10. Isaiah McDuffie will only be 26 and looks like he will be available, 26 career starts 17 last year.
  11. Willie Gay played for our LBs coach last year in New Orleans, 55 career starts but I’m not sure he’s any good.

The Bengals should go all in on Baun, I would cut Pratt and give Baun a big contract with early guaranteed money. Our LB play was extremely inconsistent last year and Baun would be a big-time upgrade over Pratt, teaming him with Wilson will be a great combo.

Quote

“He had a lot of influence on my game,” Baun said via Bengals.com. “From the jump during COVID, he was helping me out, obviously making that transition from on the ball to off the ball. Great coach. Very detail-oriented and even better person. A friend for life.”

Hodges coached Baun while the two were with the Saints. Hodges was named the team’s linebackers coach the same year they selected Baun in the third round out of Wisconsin. While with the Badgers, Baun was a linebacker but was used more as a defensive end and pass rusher. When he was selected by the Saints, he had to make the transition to NFL linebacker.

Baun didn’t have a ton of success with the Saints, only starting 14 games through his time in New Orleans. He signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in early 2024 and had a breakout season.

Baun started 16 games and finished the season with 3.5 sacks, 151 tackles, five forced fumbles, and four passes defensed. He made First Team All-Pro and has set himself up nicely to sign a big deal, either in Philadelphia or elsewhere.

For a new coach, getting players they are familiar with is a big plus, especially if it's an All-Pro coming in the door with a Super Bowl ring.

It also sounds as if Golden want a few guys who can be a swiss army knife and hop into coverage from the edge position and blitz from the LB position, etc.. those athletic freak Tweeners, im curious is Ossai comes back. Ossai should have a solid market for him based on a few bursts in play here or there and also his young age and experience.

i think people may be surprised how much he gets paid for how little he played/produced. everything BUT the statline is attractive about Ossai.

too bad he isnt restricted or a qualifying offer would keep him around.  i only bring up a "DE" in the idea he could play the in between spot Golden talks about.

Walker from Georgia and Jihad Campbell are two guys in this draft who could fit that mold. Safety/LB Tweeners? You could argue Battle already is one, but the kid from South Carolina certainly looks the part (don't know what kind of wood he brings). But you can add a lot of weight to that 6-3 frame, and if he's already running a 4.3...?

Posted

BTW, Jihad Campbell is a dark horse pick for the Bengals in the 1st. If by some magic they could shore up 1 DE and 1 DT through FA, and get a difference maker at the other spot in the 2nd, it just could be the biggest impact move of for the defense.

PFT says various league sources expect a "frenzy" of interest in Joey Bosa. I'd rather the Bengals pursue Khalil Mack on a 1 year deal.

Campbell would be a legit pick at 17. Depends on who else is available but wouldn't hate taking Campbell.
