Arkansas Bengal Posted March 3 Report Posted March 3 The Bengals continue to clear cap space. James Rapien | 58 Minutes Ago Sep 23, 2024; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Andrei Iosivas (80) celebrates a touchdown with guard Alex Cappa (65) and guard Cordell Volson (67) during the third quarter against the Washington Commanders at Paycor Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images / Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images In this story: CINCINNATI — The Bengals released veteran guard Alex Cappa on Monday. Cappa made 50 starts for Cincinnati after signing with the Bengals in 2022. He helped them get to the AFC Championship Game that season and was considered their best offensive lineman that season. The Bengals clear $8 million in cap space by releasing the veteran. There is a $2.25 million dead cap hit with the release, but this is a move that seemed inevitable after the struggles that Cappa had in 2024. That gives the Bengals more than $69 million in cap space to work with ahead of free agency. In a perfect world, Cincinnati would be able to find the next Cappa. He was a good signing in 2022 and performed at a high level, but wasn't the same after the ankle injury he suffered late in the season. https://www.si.com/nfl/bengals/news/cincinnati-bengals-release-alex-cappa-add-extra-cap-space-ahead-of-free-agency-01jneb5d633f?fbclid=IwY2xjawIyw3ZleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHe4n0jNJCtjVKde8-eWB2dx9eHBSEtdVS9eEB3flT4uJA6NCl3UJYBdf7A_aem_K-TxVcxWiL-UTk_DMfeVAg 1 Quote
texbengal Posted March 3 Report Posted March 3 Needed to happen. He did some good things early but after the injuries he just wasn’t the same. I wish him well. 1 Quote
|BlackJesus| Posted March 3 Report Posted March 3 He was in Tate Ratledge's spot and had to go. 😉 1 Quote
Le Tigre Posted March 3 Report Posted March 3 It it means signing Tee and Trey…all well and good. But: there is now a gaping hole at the spot. Unconvinced that there is a G on the open market who won’t cost nearly as much. And there is no one currently on the roster. As a public service, PLEASE nobody suggest “Matt Lee can kick out to guard” Quote
sparky151 Posted March 3 Report Posted March 3 Even if his replacement costs as much, he'll be a better player. That's what we need. We can also sign better players at a lower cost than Cappa. We could double Dalton Risner's salary to 5 mil and he'd still cost less than Cappa. 1 Quote
New Jersey Bengal Posted March 3 Report Posted March 3 Cappa was excellent before his injury he never recovered Quote

sparky151 Posted March 3 Report Posted March 3 I'd say release Hubbard and Moss now. Volson once we have his replacement signed. We may be able to trade Cordell or Pratt or Stone for a late pick or another team's castoff who matches a Bengals need. 1 Quote

Volson still on rook contract right? Good backup with durability.. Noone is giving up anything for Stone imo. A trade with Indy for Pratt seems imminent. They can negotiate a 5th or 6th for him.. sparky151 Posted March 3 Report Posted March 3 Herbert is a different type of player than Moss so it's not a 1 for 1 replacement. Volson is still on his rookie deal but he qualified for playing time escalators that tripled his salary. CTB did the same. But Volson was a backup to Ford who makes considerably less than Volson's new 4th year number. Risner had 0 penalties and 0 sacks allowed for both 2023 and 2024 while making less than Volson is scheduled to get as an example. If Volson is cut, he'd go through waivers. If we think someone will claim him, we could offer him in trade for a late pick. If we're confident he'll clear waivers at his new price, then he could be re-signed for the minimum salary if he wanted to return to the Bengals. I worry a little that Peters might actually believe the stuff he's saying about Volson. It would be a terrible mistake for the Bengals to count on him as a starter in 2025. Stone has the second most interceptions in the NFL over the 2023-24 period (behind Kerby Joseph). That should be worth something in trade. Pratt to the Colts seems logical. I'd be happy with anything better than a 7th and would take the 7th. Quote

T-Dub Posted March 3 Report Posted March 3 That's great but how the fuck are they going to bench Volson then let Ford walk and give him back the job? Why is McPherson still on the roster? I get the impression the FO are not all on the same page. Quote

You wrote 3 different things here and none of them are going to happen Volson isn't going to start Ford isn't going to walk McPherson isn't getting cut 3 Quote

Lee is a center..period. Karras could move to either G position and be a upgrade imo. The draft could land them something better than Kappa/Volson as well. 1 Quote

Don't be shocked if a free agent signing is announced when free agency opens. 2 Quote

How many more missed kicks do you want to give him? Maybe he "bounces back" and maybe he doesn't. I don't want to lose more games waiting to find out. 1 Quote

McPherson was as good as the Bengals have ever had until last season and he’s still young. It would be as bad of a mistake as keeping Fat Randy over Elliott if you get rid of McPherson now. Quote
