A summary of last season's aberration

The fact that Burrow threw 21 TDs and only 3 int in the 8 losses is mind boggling.

That should basically be statistically impossible in today's NFL, unless you just let the other team score on every possession.

That was basically a 13-4 team with the worst fluke luck and defensive execution in NFL history.

The long snapper/holder/ pro bowl quality kicker

getting off track and going wonky cost them a couplea few.

The kicker/holder cost 1-2 wins and the refs stole 2-3 ... When you combine that with the dreadful defense, that's how the best offense who could have won the Super Bowl misses the playoffs.

What's crazy is I think this season Burrow will be even better and win the MVP award he deserved last year 🏆

I still reject the "luck" excuse.

Luck in the sense that usually a team has some of the bounces and calls go their way as well, to even the anomalies out.

Had he played better against the Pats, we would have gotten in. So Joe is technically right.

But had the defense even been mediocre, we would have too.

Keep in mind that was Burrow's first game back from a very rare ligament injury to his throwing wrist. I remember how he searched all offseason for a QB at any level that had also suffered that particular injury. Just so he would know what the recovery period was like. Not sure if he ever found one.

It sure didn't help. But I still lay it on the defense. In most of those games they scored over 30 points. Should have been a win.

The only game I blame the offense for at all is NEP.

For the sake of argument: 21st in YPC doesn't sound so bad, but if they were able to gain positive yards on the ground consistently, maybe it would've helped the struggling defense out a little bit? 30th in attempts, 30th in rushing YPG... So, are they bad at it or are they scared to try, or both?

This is not meant to excuse the sorry-ass defense through most of the year. If we're going to absolve the offense, though, we're really talking about the passing offense. Rushing (and kicking) weren't great. It would probably help if they could (or would) lean on the run more when they're protecting a lead.

Wasn't blaming tht for all the woes, jusg adding it to the list.

If all of the games are going to be close, then the kicking game becomes absolutely critical. Not only did the Bengals struggle kicking FGs, their opponents did a great job with it on their end.

Potentially why they brought in compition for long snapper and not kicker, seems the coaches think that and not McPherson is the problem.

They chose not to take the out in his contract this offseason so let's hope they're right
