This weekend the Bengals are 10.5 pt dogs at home. The worst spread of any game.

You can bet Bengals v Packers next week on draft kings. 13.5 dogs.

Is this what season ticket holders paid for?

For context ~25% is far from "awful", according to ESPN that's good for top 10 DE territory, about tied with Parsons for example. They've got Trey at 19% but that's still top 20. I will assume single digits are bad, at least for a DE/OLB.

Interior, those types (Atkins, Reader) are rare - the average NFL DT is playing the run, eating blocks & setting the LOS, they aren't typically sack machines. The 3 DT's tied at #1 have a 19% win rate. More interested in RBWR for the inside.

I think whoever posted those numbers didn't really understand them, it's not A-F grading on a curve. Or is my math not mathing?

the change from week 3 to 4 for trey shows him having essentially a 0% win rate in week 4...

so he started stong and was invisible against the broncos.

The 49ers, with their #1 and #2 Wrs, Kittle and Purdy out just marched down the field and scored opening drive. We can’t do shit. Mac Jones?? Depressing.

EDIT: the 49ers, with a significantly more depleted roster than ours, managed to beat a very good team last night in a WELL played Thursday Night game against a good team.

Ja’Marr Chase: “Hell no” on wanting Joe Burrow on the sideline vs. Lions

Chase is clearly missing his best friend on the team.

Any Bengals fan can tell Ja’Marr Chase is frustrated that Joe Burrow is injured. He wasn’t just frustrated during the game Monday night in Denver about the way the Bengals’ offense was performing. Chase hasn’t been the same since Burrow went down in Week 2.

When asked on Thursday if he wants Burrow on the sideline on Sunday when the Bengals take on the Detroit Lions, Chase was emphatic with his response.

Ja'Marr Chase on if he wants Joe Burrow to be on the sideline on Sunday: "Hell no."

"They don't need to see Joe's face. Just get healthy. Come back later."

This can be interpreted in multiple ways. Chase clearly thinks there is still something for this team to play for this season, so he wants Burrow to be able to come back. Does Chase think Burrow is closer to coming back than maybe others think? Who knows, and that’s not suggesting he could be.

Chase only has one touchdown through four games this season. That’s not the first time he’s only had that number of touchdowns through four games. He didn’t have any through four games in 2023 before exploding for three in Week 5 at the Arizona Cardinals.

The Bengals’ All-Pro wide receiver has 26 receptions for 264 yards and a touchdown through four games this season. Those aren’t bad numbers. But 14 of those receptions came in Week 2 against the Jaguars. That means Chase only has 12 receptions in the other three games.

As bad as the last two games have been for the Bengals, they are still currently in the No. 6 seed in the AFC. There is still a lot to play for. Chase knows that. Hopefully, the rest of the team will play like that on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

Jared Goff says the Lions won't take the struggling Bengals lightly

ByAP

Updated: Oct 2, 2025, 05:29 pm

Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions are motoring on all cylinders with three straight wins after a season-opening loss at Green Bay.

Even though the Lions are double-digit favorites on the road against the reeling Cincinnati Bengals, Goff isn't taking his team's momentum going into Sunday's game for granted.

Goff also dismisses the notion that the Bengals are a trap team despite having lost two straight games by a combined score of 76-13.

“I think these guys are not even close to being a bad team, to be a trap team. I think they’re a really dang good team,” Goff said. “Certainly, on defense they present some challenges for us on offense that we have to handle. There’s no way we could take them lightly in any way.”

Detroit (3-1) has bounced back from a season-opening loss at Green Bay with three straight wins, averaging 41.3 points and outscoring Chicago, Baltimore and Cleveland by 20 points on average.

“We’re on fire right now,” said edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who has a three-game sack streak. “We want to keep this train moving.”

Cincinnati (2-2) has been listless on offense since losing Joe Burrow to a toe injury in a Week 2 win over Jacksonville. The Bengals suffered the worst loss in franchise history at Minnesota (48-10) in Week 3 and were dominated 28-3 last Monday night at Denver.

Jake Browning has thrown five interceptions since replacing Burrow. The offense has averaged a league-low 4.13 plays per drive and gone three-and-out on 12 of its 23 drives, while the defense has been on the field an average of 34:27 the past two games.

“We need to improve in just staying ahead of the sticks,” Browning said. “Also just how I approach some of my decision-making and prioritizing, knowing when the situations are to take the shots and knowing when the situations are to just take the completion underneath, get us into a third-and-manageable.”

Home sweet home?

Ja'Marr Chase's only good game this season came in the Bengals' Week 2 home game against Jacksonville, when he had 14 catches for 165 yards and a touchdown.

In the other three games, he has had 12 receptions for 99 yards. He was frustrated on the sidelines during the second half against Denver after having five catches for only 23 yards. The 4.6 average yards per reception was his second-lowest in a game with at least two catches.

Chase's 264 yards through four games is his lowest in his five-year NFL career.

“I think we can throw it to him 20 times and it is still not enough,” offensive coordinator Dan Pitcher said. “I love Ja’Marr. I love everything about him. I love how competitive he is. I love how he practices. I love how he plays. If we are going to improve, then the road to improvement certainly goes through Ja’Marr Chase.”

Trying not to get run over

After allowing 100-yard rushers the last two weeks, the Bengals' defense faces a challenge this week trying to contain Detroit's Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.

The Bengals have allowed a league-high 303 rushing yards on missed tackles, not a good trend going into a game against a duo that's one of the best in the league at making defenders miss.

“Just defend your gap, keep the ball on your inside pad. Play with leverage,” defensive coordinator Al Golden said.

Rarefied air

Lions assistant head coach Scottie Montgomery compared Amon-Ra St. Brown’s mentality and competitiveness to two Basketball Hall of Famers: Michael Jordan and the late Kobe Bryant.

“He’s a throwback player playing in today’s society,” Montgomery said.

St. Brown has 27 receptions for 307 yards and six touchdowns this season, scoring in three straight games. He is the first NFL player with 25-plus catches, at least 300 yards receiving and six receiving touchdowns through four games since Hall of Famer Randy Moss did it in 2007 during his first season with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, who went undefeated in the regular season that year.

Since Detroit drafted St. Brown out of Southern California in the fourth round in 2021, the two-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler has a league-high 457 catches.

“He’s been doing this for really for 4 1/2 years,” Detroit coach Dan Campbell said. “Once he figured it out halfway through ’21, nobody’s as consistent as he’s been.”

Sackless

Detroit has not given up a sack in three straight games for the first time since it became an official statistic in 1982.

“It’s cool, but it’s not just us,” center Graham Glasgow said. “A lot of that is Jared (Goff) getting the ball out, receivers getting open along with running backs and tight ends chipping in to block.”

Is Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson headed for another multi-sack day against the Bengals?

I'm a little surprised to see the Lions leading the entire league in defensive sack rate (10.6%), but Hutchinson is hot since returning from leg surgery. He has a sack in three straight games, including two last Sunday against the Browns. He also ranked in the top five in pass rush win rate at edge that week. Now he and the Lions get to face a Bengals team that is struggling mightily in pass protection.

As a team, the Bengals rank dead last in pass block win rate (44.6%). Against the Broncos last week, both tackles Amarius Mims and Orlando Brown Jr. ranked in the bottom five in pass block win rate at their position. Add in that backup QB Jake Browning has been sacked 8% of the time (higher-than-average rate), and that the Bengals should have to pass plenty as underdogs. So Hutchinson (and perhaps Al-Quadin Muhammad) should be in for a productive pass rushing day.

Lions (3-1) at Bengals (2-2)

4:25 p.m. ET | Fox | Matchup rating: 66.0/100
ESPN BET: DET -10.5 (49.5 O/U)

What we're hearing on the Lions: It'll be an emotional homecoming for Lions RB David Montgomery as he plays in his hometown for the first time in his NFL career. He played the Bengals once in 2021 with the Bears in Chicago (20 rushes, 61 yards), but he has never had a road game against the Bengals. Montgomery attended Mount Healthy (Ohio) High School, where he earned All-State honors as a dual-threat QB. He is coming off a season-low 12 rushing yards with nine carries against Cleveland, but is looking to get back on track in a familiar setting in front of family and friends. "He's going to kill it," Arvie Crouch, Montgomery's high school coach, told ESPN. -- Eric Woodyard

What we're hearing on the Bengals: This game will be a gut check for the Bengals in every way possible. The Lions are expected to steamroller Cincinnati, which is in some of the worst form in franchise history. Detroit is second in the NFL in rate of designed rush plays, per ESPN Research. The Bengals' rush defense will have to limit big plays, and stopping those will come down to deploying basic techniques. Said defensive coordinator Al Golden: "Just defend your gap, keep the ball on your inside pad. Play with leverage." -- Ben Baby

Stat to know: Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase is seeking to avoid going three straight games with 50 or fewer receiving yards for the second time in his career. -- ESPN Research

Bold prediction: Bengals QB Jake Browning will record a 60-plus QBR. Don't get me wrong: Confidence in Browning has dropped off dramatically from where it was a few weeks ago. But then again, the two defenses he has played have been the Vikings and Broncos, and it doesn't get much tougher than that. Considering his past success, I think there's still hope for him and the Bengals. -- Walder

Fantasy nugget: Lions QB Jared Goff has averaged just 14.1 fantasy points per game on the road since 2021. Detroit would be wise to lean heavily on Jahmyr Gibbs, Montgomery and the running game. This matchup also has one of the higher totals on the slate, and the Bengals' defense has given up the second-most fantasy points per game to running backs. See Week 5 rankings. -- Moody

Betting nugget: The Lions are 11-2 ATS as road favorites since 2023. Read more. -- ESPN Research

Maldonado's pick: Lions 37, Bengals 34
Moody's pick: Lions 33 Bengals 17
Walder's pick: Lions 31, Bengals 26
FPI prediction: DET, 76.9% (by an average of 11.0 points)

So you agree the coaches, with a completely depleted roster and backup QB called what they felt were the best plays in the situation and marched down the field and scored. It’s the equivalent of not having Tee, Geseki, Chase, Burrow and Hendrickson. I mean, we all saw it happen against the 12th ranked defense.

The 49ers had 407 yards of offense in that game with 333 yards in the air. We have averaged 160 yards total and every unit has sucked. All because we are missing our starting QB?

Expectations were high for Chase Brown, but Joe Burrow’s injury has sunk Cincinnati’s offense. The Bengals are falling behind early, leaving Brown with just 10 carries per game in two starts without Burrow.

He has averaged only 2.15 yards per carry behind an offensive line that Pro Football Focus ranks worst in the league. With defenses unafraid of Jake Browning, Brown is being stuffed at the line.

Week 5 brings another tough matchup. Detroit ranks sixth in run defense and second in tackling, per PFF. This is not the spot for Brown or the Bengals to break their slump.

I know right, can you believe anyone’s complaining about or criticizing this Jake Browning led juggernaut of an offense?

Unstoppable.

Couple Jake Freaking Browning with the offensive mastermind that is Zac Taylor and you’ve got a Bilichek Brady budding bromance. And the scary thing for the rest of the NFL is that this boulder is just beginning to roll downhill. Wait until it gains some momentum. This offense will be even more unstoppabler!!

I think this week this juggernaut can even score 6, maybe even 9 or 10 pts. What will the haters say then?? Probably keep complaining that the offense only had 160 total yards or some other nonsense. Like yards gained matter lolololol.
