What's next for Bengals' pass rush post-Trey Hendrickson?

“It's a Go-Bengals off-season tradition.”

It’s a fan base in every sport this side of cricket off season tradition…and I haven’t checked cricket, so it’s probably there too.

Wow, what a grumpy little baby you are ☹️

Too funny.

Agreed.

You can either choose to keep relitigating the last 30 years though or you can choose to live in the present and post things like mock drafts, additions to the scouting staff, FA lists, etc. Things that are relevant to TODAY, ya know?

Going round and round about what the Bengals did to you in the 90’s certainly doesn’t add anything new to the conversation though. And let’s face it, that’s all this is. Some of these people are still pissed about David Shula and Melvin Tuten for crying out loud.

Fixing the Bengals’ pass-rush problem, Part 1: Finding depth at edge imperative

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7013867/2026/02/03/fixing-the-bengals-pass-rush-depth/?source=user_shared_article

The article is behind a paywall but I thought this little nugget was interesting..

Let’s start on the edge with what we do know. Myles Murphy will be a central part of the equation. He enjoyed a breakout in his third season after two slow years to start.

This wasn’t circumstantial or based on a string of advantageous matchups while playing out the string. What Murphy did passed the eye, coach and analytic tests.

Everyone, from personnel to coaches, raved about Murphy’s effort and production through the final eight weeks. Flashes and glimpses seen through the early portion of his career turned into consistent playmaking.

The numbers back it up.

Murphy posted 28 pressures, four sacks and 20 stops (tackle for offensive failure) during the final eight weeks. All leading the team, mostly by a significant margin. His pressures and pressure rate both ranked in the top 15 percent of qualifying edge rushers over that span.

Murphy didn’t just finally consistently disrupt the quarterback; he consistently did it all season on the money downs for an edge.

Murphy posted a 23.2 percent pressure rate this season on third or fourth and 5-plus yards. That ranked fifth among qualifying pass rushers, surrounded by the biggest names in the game.

That article had a hilarious comment in it. The Bengals like what they have in Stewrat and he sits in the front row in meetings. What a relief, if he was in row 2 he would be unproductive.

I believe e Stewart will set the edge and continue to the rush.

He's not aTrey type pass rusher.

Moree like Sam Hubbard imo

Murphy brings the heat in place of Trey.

That's pretty incredible numbers .

I’m not all that worried about Stewart. I think he’ll turn out to be solid. Maybe not a superstar, but definitely solid.

So well over drafted then? A clear reach?

Yes...

Not every first becomes a star unfortunately .

A reach?..

Let's determine that after next season imo.

I bet Dalton was in the front row and even volunteered as a hall monitor.

Why are they like this? Every glimpse behind the curtain is more cringe than the last.

"Where's my hug?" franchise smh

After one year? No, I don’t believe that.

If he goes out in year two and plays in every game and produces say 6-8 sacks and holds up well in the run game, does that mean he was a reach?

Have you emailed Duke Tobin yet? I'm sure he'll be thrilled to hear that you aren't worried about Stewart.

Well, he was drafted high because he was a 'disruptor' so if he is not that (eventually) then he indeed was a reach. Time will tell, but the original response was to the post saying he should turn out 'good'. for his spot selected and for the purpose selected he needs to be better than that to not be considered a reach IMO.

Lets hope we are all wrong and he kills it.

I think expectations are a little out of control here. He doesn’t have to get 12 sacks a year in order to not be a reach.

I did. He thanked me for my feedback, Corky 👍

That's pretty incredible numbers .

Those are pretty cherry picked numbers. 3rd and 4 is a passing down for almost every NFL team but isn't in the stat reported. And this is another example of the "final half of the season" fallacy as if the games only count after the team is effectively eliminated from playoff contention. Hard to make the bar much lower than that.

I’m not all that worried about Stewart. I think he’ll turn out to be solid. Maybe not a superstar, but definitely solid.

Er, based on what? He didn't play much this past season and wasn't very effective when he was on the field.

I think expectations are a little out of control here. He doesn’t have to get 12 sacks a year in order to not be a reach.

I'd say in order to not be considered a reach, he'd have to win a starting DE job, play a lot of snaps and be better than an average NFL DE in year 2. He's pretty far from that at the moment.

I mean, he was also injured for half of the season. Let’s be real here.
