Why Cowboys should prioritize Boye Mafe over Trey Hendric...

There is one free agent EDGE that might be the best fit for the Cowboys new scheme

I've watched a lot of him with my son being a Seahawks fan.

He was mostly used as a situational pass rusher with most of his time with his hand on the ground. The highlights someone put up in the other thread show what he does and the usual result - extremely high energy, moves based (as opposed to power based) rusher who "gets there" a lot but can get out of control trying to actually make the sack. His run stopping is probably best defined as "incomplete" due to the situational role.

Pros:

  • Extremely high energy, never stops.

  • Very good pass rush moves but once locked up he's usually done rushing.

  • With that said, he's very adept at knocking down passes.

  • We're getting him in his prime years (in theory).

Cons:

  • Hard to say what he'll do against the run.

  • Hard to say if he can play every down.

  • Has a bad habit of lining up offside.

So from all of the above I'd take this as - he's probably going to be asked to be our Hendrickson replacement, but based on role he's much more like an upgraded Ossai. He's totally different in how he approaches the rush compared to Trey and quite frankly he's exactly the same type of FA Trey was we signed him, i.e. an unknown quantity who flashed and we're making a bet that he's going to get better with more playtime.

Best season was '23. Was so-so last year overall. Not a sack machine (other than '23), and as Jamie pointed out, more of a 3-4 LB than a true Edge.

Nice signing. They still need a LOT more pass rushers and interior DL.

Sounds like Carl Lawson

More athletic, higher energy, has more to offer in terms of from snap to whistle (i.e. will do whatever it takes to try and make a play, where my impression of Lawson was always - I'll try to get a sack but if I don't, eh, play's over).

Mafe is what Stewart should be based on measurables. They have similar builds (6'4, 260 lbs) and athleticism (41 inch vert for Mafe).

If we can have them both playing up to their athletic potential, look out! 👀

This is a good signing. He may not be as productive as a healthy Hendrickson but he's certainly better than Ossai or Stewart.

Now we need a starting LB, a DT upgrade, and another pass rusher.

Which player would have been the best FA defensive line pickup for the Bengals?

DT pass rusher John Franklin-Myers 3Y-63M

EDGE pass rusher Boye Mafe 3Y-60M

Tossup...

Good with either....or Both!

I like that this probably pushes Stewart down the depth chart. Best thing for him at this point. Can't hand someone that raw a starting spot and expect it to work out.

Do not like that Murphy is still a starter by default but that may yet change. Still think loafing until his contract year should earn him nothing but a ticket out of here but hey, they're desperate.

Where's OBJ??..🥺

Probably gassing himself up in a locker room interview, if I had to guess.

So mammoth..so soft..

Media loves this guy.

So will the AFCN pass rushers .

Would the top 2 OTs if drafted help more than him this year or does experience override that?
