He’ll be great in the locker room and being a mentor to the young guys. I don’t see him as a FT solution necessarily, but as part of a rotation, he should be solid. He gives them some juice, which they sorely needed.

Still think for what they needed, re interior pass rush, Odigizuwa was the ticket. Guess we’ll see.

Would not be shocked if they still add a DT in the draft. Jackson isn't cutting it, and from what I heard Jenkins is a 9-5er, meaning he only puts in the work he has to and doesn't do extra.

Unlike the Cook and Mafe deals, this is not a good signing. We should have spent the 14 mil plus an extra mil on Devin Lloyd or saved some money with Leo Chenal or thrown it at Jadaveon Clowney.

Allen ranked 84th of 127 interior defenders last year. His overall PFF score was 53.2. Kris Jenkins scored 53.3 for the season. Would anyone want to give Jenkins a 14 mil extension?

Javon Hargrave, Khyris Tonga, Logan Hall, A'shawn Robinson were free agent DTs who are much better than Allen. We didn't need to spend up for Franklin-Myers or trade for Odighizuwa to get someone better.

And why would he? He could still end up a starter by default, just like Murphy has failed upwards doing the bare minimum. They need a DJ Reader/Domata Peko-type to put next to him. If they can figure out a way to make that happen, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with this signing. Add another guy in the 2nd or 3rd round to come in and compete with Slaton/Jenkins and they’ll be an improved group overall.

As a body, sure. Not as an answer to the hole at DT. This just seems like another Slaton. Treading water.

Going into the draft desperate for a DT - or any position - is how they end up reaching.

Why does anyone think Allen will be starting ahead of Hill? And Allen isn't really a NT to replace Slaton.

Yeah, I suspect the Bengals are holding back in free agency in hopes of getting that precious end of 3rd round next year comp pick.
That's a terrible way to run a franchise but entirely credible. Allen doesn't count in the comp pick formula because he was cut by the Vikings. But so was Javon Hargrave who is a better player at this point in their careers and could replace Slaton. He also cost less than Allen.

Allen was a great player at Alabama and was a mid first round pick. But it's been several years since he was better than average.

Agreed. I wasn’t a fan of the signing overall … but because I expect a rotation for both Allen and Hill, that should help both players. BJ in recent years past just plain wore down (because they didn’t have anything else), so he played way too many snaps.
