We will start with the recent era and move back.

Burfict. I think a lot of Bengals fans still need to get over the idea he was some dirty awful player and realize his only crime was giving the Stealers a taste of their own medicine. He didn't do anything that they don't do every Sunday. He was "out of control" and basically run out of the league for doing not even half the shit Harrison or Porter or Shazier routinely got away with.

He's still the best LB this franchise has had since Takeo and the defense has been softer than tapioca pudding since he left.

FTS and fuck Steeler simp Goodell pushing that whole narrative. 'Taze did nothing wrong. Put him up there and let them bitches cry their big salty boohoo crocodile tears about it.

Burfict may have been the best LB in years. But I would not put him ahead of any of the guys I listed.

this list is very hard to argue against. Chad, Geno and Whit are untouchables. only AJ could maybe be replaced, not because of talent though... he was freaking awesome.

Maybe big Willie as a replacement..

Probably not though...those 4 are probably the best.

I interpret the question as, which 4 guys define that era for you? Both good and bad. Basically who do you think of when you close your eyes. So in that light my answer is ...

Marvin Lewis Era

Andy Dalton

Chad Johnson

Vontaze Burfict

PacMan Jones

Geno and AJ had more talent of course, but they were not "main characters" in the drama.

I think some of the Whitworth hype is revisionist as well and based on losing to him in the Super Bowl. Willie to me was far more impactful and influential in his time here than Whit.

Willie will probably be on my "dark decade" list.

no way, he routinely shut down the best pass rushers in the NFL, gave up maybe one sack a year, AND put a spine into what was, again, a very soft team.

Drafted in 2001. He was a Marvin consideration.

Before I post the Gregg/Wyche era, I am struggling with where to put Ken Anderson. In this era or the pre 80s era. Most of his career was before 1981, but 81 and 82 could be considered his best.

I would put him in the Gregg era because Boomer is more emblematic of the Wyche era as they came on the same year.

Gregg and Wyche are being combined because the Gregg era was short and the 80s were a 2 Super Bowl Era.

for some reason i thought he was here earlier.. I guess Marv eventually had some pretty good defenses that Smith wasn't a part of so it kind of escaped me.

'member when he had 80* tackles in a season? Absurd for a DE, that's some dog-ass defense required for that to ever happen.
