OUCH for him...but not really sure what to make of this so far...

House majority leader indicted, steps aside 22 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Congressman Tom DeLay, a powerful ally of President George W. Bush, was indicted on campaign finance charges and announced he was temporarily giving up his post as Republican Party majority leader in the House of Representatives.

"I have notified the Speaker ( Dennis Hastert) that I will temporarily step aside from my position as majority leader pursuant to rules of the House Republican Conference and the actions of the Travis County (Texas) District Attorney today," DeLay said in a statement.

DeLay, who was indicted on a single count of criminal conspiracy in connection with a campaign finance scheme, denounced the indictment as a "partisan vendetta" by a Texas prosecutor, Ronnie Earle, engaging in a "purely political investigation."

"These charges have no basis in the facts or the law," DeLay's office said in a statement released by his spokesman, Kevin Madden.

"This is just another example of Ronnie Earle misusing his office for partisan vendettas.

"Despite the clearly political agenda of this prosecutor, Congressman DeLay has cooperated with officials throughout the entire process," the statement said.

"Even in the last two weeks, Ronnie Earle himself had acknowledged publicly that Mr. DeLay was not a target of his investigation," it said.

"However, as with many of Ronnie Earle's previous partisan investigations, Ronnie Earle refused to let the facts or the law get in the way of his partisan desire to indict a political foe."
DeLay, whose tactics have earned him the nickname "The Hammer," has been instrumental to getting key parts of Bush's agenda through the House.

this will probably not be the last for this to happen to:

“We have people in our conference who want to go after Nancy Pelosi, who has violated federal election law and has been fined,” said Rep. Tom Feeney (R-Fla.), who was a critic of the ethics committee and a strong defender of DeLay during the ethics controversy that embroiled him before the election.

“To the extent that she’s violated federal law, she’s brought into question the integrity of the House,” Feeney said. “We have members who would love to see us retaliate by going after Nancy Pelosi.” Feeney declined to name members who want to target Pelosi.

The Federal Election Commission fined Pelosi’s political operation $21,000 last year for collecting and distributing funds in excess of campaign-finance limits through two leadership political action committees: PAC to the Future and Team Majority.

Crider noted that the $21,000 fine was dwarfed by comparison with the nearly $200,000 that Rep. Mike Ferguson (R-N.J.) was fined in 2003.

“Do they also plan on filing charges on the 12 or more [Republican] members who were fined in the last cycle?” Crider asked.

this is pretty common actually and i'm glad that they are taking people down... now to go after all the others that are breaking these laws...

They say this is his Modus Operandi; the same way he went after Kay Hutchenson.

The trial will not begin until next year at this time; oh around Election time
Lending ample time to drag Tom Delay's name through the mudd.

This guy doesn't actually always lose, but drops his cases when he feels he has met his agenda.
