Post-practice hits: Dunlap on loose

The Bengals went full pads for the first time Monday in front of an estimated crowd of 1,100 at the Paul Brown Stadium practice fields and the defense carried the day in the final 11-on-11 drill of the workout.

It was highlighted by back-to-back sacks from left end Carlos Dunlap working against right tackle Andre Smith. Earlier in the day when the Bengals had a live half-line drill to work on the running game, Smith and left tackle Andrew Whitworth offered some powerful blocks.

So did rookie tight ends C.J. Uzomah and Matt Lengel. Uzomah also got loose on a long completion working against a linebacker in that final team drill. Like he did on Sunday when he hit rookie wider receiver Mario Alford on a corner route to end an inconsistent day, backup quarterback AJ McCarron did it again when he ended an up-and-down practice on a crisp crossing pattern to wide receiver Tevin Reese.

Starting running back Jeremy Hill ended practice on the sidelines with ice on his knee, but it didn’t appear serious. Wide receivers Marvin Jones (muscle soreness) and Onterio McCalebb (knee) didn’t work.

Also not working was right end Michael Johnson after he appeared to suffer an MCL knee sprain on Sunday. Defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said only he’d be out “a few weeks.” Right end Wallace Gilberry, who also appeared to have muscle soreness, sat out. Middle linebacker Rey Maualuga (unknown) has yet to practice this camp.

For the first time Monday, WLL linebacker Vontaze Burfict (knee) surfaced with his teammates during practice and joined Maualuga, right end Margus Hunt (back) and linebacker Sean Porter (knee) on the rehab field. He looked as good as the others and it looks like his return is still set for a few more weeks. Guenther has been talking about getting him ready for the third preseason game.
