MajorVirus
Newest Addition P.K. Sam to Help Bengals Newest Addition P.K. Sam to Help Bengals Tim Eisenhut - Scout.com February 6, 2006 at 5:55pm ET Signed on Feb 2, the newest Cincinnati Bengal is aiming to give Chad Johnson another decoy and will be looked at closely as a return threat on Cincy's special teams. Born in February 1983 as Philip Kenwood Sam II, his passion for athletics led him to success at Buford High School (Georgia). Sam won the Georgia state track championship in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and helped lead his football team to the state finals with a 13-2 record. Recruited highly by Florida State , Sam totaled seven TDs and 1066 receiving yards on 76 grabs for the Seminoles. In addition to starting in just over a third of the games for FSU at split end (he started every game in his junior & final year), Sam also handled kickoff and punt return duties during his three seasons. Drafted as the youngest player in 2004 (barely 21), the New England Patriots chose Sam as the 4th pick of the 5th round (164th overall). The Patriots gave Sam some early playing time during his rookie season, but a groin injury forced New England to put him on injured reserve in October after making appearances in just two NFL games. Prior to New England's superbowl, Sam was moved from IR to suspended status for an undisclosed violation of team rules...hence, Sam was unable to make the trip. 2005 left Sam hungry and looking to prove himself. He aligned himself with NE wide receiver Deion Branch and was rumored to be hanging out with the star. But getting out of coach Bill Belichick's doghouse was a tough task. With the offseason signings of additional wide receivers Tim Dwight , David Terrell , and Troy Brown (resigning) to go with Branch, Bethel Johnson , and David Givens , Sam was going to be lucky to make the cut. A preseason hamstring injury didn't help matters and Sam was ultimately released with several others (incl. Terrell) in New England's move down to 53 on September 3rd. P. K. Sam was added to the Patriots' practice squad on September 8th and remained until his contract ran dry on January 23rd. Sam is a big wide receiver. He's stands tall at 6'3" and weighs 210 pounds. He has long arms and deceptive speed with a 40 time of 4.46. The skinny on him is that he is a playmaker, but can be inconsistent. He has huge talent, but his talent is raw. His ability to make big plays comes with a propensity to drop passes. Sam is thought to have the ability to be a 3rd wide receiver for the Bengals behind Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh , but he'll have to prove himself and bond with coach Marvin Lewis to earn that spot. Sam's history of returning punts and kicks also makes him a candidate on special teams and will be looked at extensively this offseason. Time will tell as to P.K. Sam 's role on Cincy's roster. His 2 year undisclosed contract is a sign that the Bengals have a need at the position and a belief that Sam can come in and contribute. Lewis will give Sam the coaching and time he needs to develop...what he does with the opportunity is up to him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more great Cincinnati stories click the Scout.com logo in the right column or go here: http://bengals.scout.com
