Strong safety is the most open position on the team. Anthony Mitchell and Kim Herring are battling for the right to complement FS Madieu Williams in the starting lineup. Mitchell has the edge because he's more physical and durable than Herring. But don't forget about Reggie Myles. The ex-cornerback is a fearless, aggressive player who gained 10 pounds to push his weight to 195. He needed the added bulk to be able to tackle the big backs in the AFC North. . . .

Keep an eye on CB Brandon Williams, who ran a 4.3 40-yard dash in recent tests. Williams, a waiver pickup from the Falcons who spent the final eight weeks of the 2004 season on the Bengals' practice squad, has improved dramatically this offseason. He's a willing tackler who is doing a better job of tracking the ball in the air. With his speed and quickness, Williams has a chance to become the club's fourth corner behind Tory James, Deltha O'Neal and Keiwan Ratliff.

SCOUTING REPORT : TB Kenny Watson is a solid special teams player who has an excellent chance to unseat Chris Perry as Rudi Johnson's top backup. Watson has good size and power and has worked hard to improve his speed and ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. He runs with good body lean and has a natural feel for the passing game, but he needs to show better concentration and ball security. If he can conquer that part of his game and become more reliable, he'll get an opportunity to contribute on third-down passing situations.

OFFENSIVE ADJUSTMENST : The unit is built around strong-armed QB Carson Palmer, and coordinator Bob Bratkowski is determined to open things up and allow his gunslinger to use all the weapons surrounding him. The club wants to build leads with a quick-strike passing game and then milk the clock in the fourth quarter by having bruising TB Rudi Johnson move the chains. The attack mode will include an empty backfield, three wideouts and two tight ends for a seven-man protection scheme that will give Palmer the time to find Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and either Peter Warrick or Kelley Washington.

INSIDE DISH : The Bengals, Eagles and Dolphins are showing the most interest in former USC defensive tackle Manuel Wright. The 6-6, 310-pound player recently visited Cincinnati in preparation for the July 14 supplemental draft. Wright dominated at times in a backup role behind Shaun Cody. He opted for the late draft when he learned he wouldn't be academically eligible for the 2005 college season. Wright shows good balance and lateral quickness for a player of his size. The Bengals could use him because Matthias Askew, a fourth-round pick in 2004, has been plagued by knee and ankle injuries.

WIDE RECEIVERS ANALYSIS : Grade: A. Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are a formidable 1-2 punch for a unit that added depth in the draft. Peter Warrick is due to be healthy by training camp.
