Well, practice starts today. UC is ranked 18 by the Sporting News. This team should be deep and fast with a shot blocker in case teams break the press. Should be a fun team to watch this year.
Can't believe practice starts already...baseball playoffs, NFL, college football and now college basketball and NBA coming in very shortly....awesome if you're a sportsfan. Are you familiar with the team this year Jason? Did you hear about the 7'2" Sudanese player Mick signed? Mick said if he was a J.C. transfer, he would have been the #1 ranked JC player in the country. Cash with a healthy knee, Killa, Jumping Jack....some really likeable players on the team. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love me some college basketball.
Not assuming a win or a loss at this point. But will making the sweet 16 and beating Florida State (not to mention Syracuse in the BE tourney) be enough to get UC ranked in the final poll? Normally I would say yes, but voters just don't seem to like us this year.
We were ranked the 9th best team in the Sweet 16. Out of all the Sweet 16 teams, only 5 teams have more wins over Top 50 opponents than UC. Syracuse and UK are 1 - 2 and we beat Syracuse...when they had Fab Melo. SO nervous/anxious/excited about this game
Its gonna be a good one. Bars should be packed tonight, all the buckeye basketball "fans" will be out in full force. Should be a crazy atmosphere all over town.
Ha.....yeah the city should be lively tonight. I'll be watching the game from the couch at home....damn 9:45 start times and my lack of foresight to schedule tomorrow off. I may just take a sick day tomorrow if UC wins. If they lose, I'll come to work and be miserable like any other day. Either way, Bart Scott and I feel the same about tonight:

NICE! Back to the Sweet 16...it's been a while. Mick Cronin really has done a marvelous job at UC despite my reservations about him when he first got the job. OSU vs UC....can't wait.
IF he keeps playing like that, and they shoot better than 9% from 3 point land.
But even so, they shot 9%, and Kilpatrick (leading scorer) had a horrible game, yet they beat a damn good Georgetown team. If Yancy keeps playing the way he is as does Parker, with the strong guard play, I think UC could be a very dangerous team in the tourney, where guard play rules. I think Yancy senses the urgency and is playing like he wants to achieve something significant while he has a chance. I think Yancy goes down in UC basketball history as one of the top 5 most important recruits. With his help, UC has been able to build a program from where it was when Huggs left. Dixon needs to step his game up though...he's so inconsistent except for the free throw line, where he consistently hits 1 of 2. He's also a senior, I wish the urgency takes a hold of him also but he's too timid I think. His game suffers from his timidness. I think Georgetown makes a nice run in the tournament also. They have all the necessary ingredients to.
After last night, unless they lose out, I think they are in.
I honestly think they have to win out vs Marquette and Villanova to be a lock. The RPI and schedule strength will work against UC even though they have 5 wins vs the top 50. Also, the bad losses vs Presbyterian and Marshall at home will work against them even though they were at the beginning of the year. They look like a tournament team to me though.
I have a budy that wants to join and his wife can get tickets for cheap.
That's cool...bring him along.
I'll do the monday game. Is that cool?
Hell yeah....Syracuse will be ranked #1...should be a good game. I'll look into getting some tickets. Nice game for Kilpatrick and Dixon....beating #11 Georgetown at their place for the 4th time in 5 tries is nice.
We should go to a home game
Not this Saturday vs St John, but the next home game is Saturday Jan 14 vs Villanova at 12noon. It's a Saturday....we can go to that one if you want or wait until the next game after that...vs #1 Syracuse on Monday Jan 23 at 7pm. Pick either one of those games and we can go.
did anyone notice that the big O made his first appearance at 5/3 this year? I used to love that guy. Then I met him(major A hole),saw him on espn with stepen a smith(racist),realized that he quit going to home games untill the team started winning.
Yeah, Oscar has never really liked the Mick hiring and he is a total douchebag in real life.
I followed online tonight. Gates had decent numbers, but have to imagine him being on the court slows the tempo
Surprisingly, it did not. Gates flowed with the game tempo and the team as opposed to trying to play the way he did before the suspension. This team right now is focused and the chemistry is off the charts. Gates, as well as Cheikh have been practicing with the team this whole time so it's not like they're "new" to this new scheme...just haven't had game experience. Now they have...beating ND by 16 is a good night. Theyre still a pretty good team without Abromaitis. I'm excited about the rest of the year....they've got a 7 game win streak going and have started B-East play 2-0. The freshman are starting to get more and more comfortable, especially Davis. They play Georgetown in a week or so, that will tell us a bit more about this team as Georgetown is pretty good, again, this year.
-
6-0 with wins against a 9-1 Oklahoma team and at #22 Pitt without Gates and Cheikh. 4 Guard offense is working nicely right now...wonder how Yancy's return will impact the chemistry this team's built in his absence.
Man, they are playing really sloppy so far tonight. If they play like this against Xavier or the Big East they will get lit up.
They have alot of new faces on the squad....I expect sloppy play for the first few games. Luckily it's Alabama St and Jax St they played sloppily against. Absolutely need to develop depth, as of right now, we have a 6 or 7 players we can rely on and that's pretty much it. In order to run the style of play Mick likes, we need another guy or two to step up. Justin Jackson dodged a HUGE bullet the other day in practice...he fell to the floor and the coachs thought he tore his achilles, a la Leon Hall, but it turned out to be a bruise. His loss would have crippled this team...he provides so much in terms of energy and hustle.
-
Justin Jackson dominated the game last night without even having the ball in his hands. He's got an innate sense how to play the game. This year's team will be fun to watch but lack depth. It's going to be tough if Dixon, Kilpatrick or Yancy cant score consistently.
-
Nice season for the Cats.....exceeded expectations. Next year's team looks very nice....Cash, Dion, Killa, Jumping Jack and Yancy. We do lose leadership and depth with Bishop, Davis, Wilks and Thomas leaving but are bringing in a top 20 recruiting class as well as getting Kelvin Gaines from his redshirt. The programs back on its feet now...5 yrs after the botching of the Huggins situation by Nancy Zimpher. No recruiting for 2 1/2 yrs can be fatal to a program but Mick's done a GREAT job in following his plan regardless of fan pressure. And he's doing it the right way with good kids who graduate and are good human beings.
Fuck you bastards! If I wanted to watch the MSU/UCLA game I would have, that's why you are carrying all 4 games on 4 different stations!!! Nice game UC!!!
I was thinking the same exact thing...there's a channel DEDICATED to MSU vs UCLA.....if someone wanted to watch it, all they would have to do is change the damn channel themselves. Utter bullshit. UCONN is the hottest team in the country right now....it's going to be an EXTREMELY difficult game to win. Their freshman are playing very well also. Going to be a tough game.
I think there's little doubt that as of right now Danny Fortson was a better, harder working, and more productive player than Gates right now. But who do you think had/s more talent?
Fortson and Gates were equally talented IMO. Gates has better athleticism but Fortson had that knack of being able to position himself perfectly and had the absolute softest touch around the rim. Gates has more tangibles but Fortson's intangibles were pretty significant. They were also different types of players IMO with Fortson a classic back to the basket kind of guy whereas Yancy prefers to play as a faceup player.....well, up until about half way point of this year after he had a talking to with coaches. Fortson had the toughness and make it happen attitude that Yancy lacks up until this point. If you could combine Fortson's demeanor and attitude with Yancy's physical gifts....you would have a very special player. They were/are both extremely talented though and if Yancy can continue to progress and carry over the momentum from this year to the offseason and next year....he could be absolutely unstoppable. Should be a good game tonight vs ND. Shut down Hansbrough and Abromaitis's 3's and make the other players beat you...I think UC pulls this one out if they continue to play with the defensive intensity as they have been playng with recently. Their defense will dictate how well they play tonight.
-
Villanova's fading....but they're still a good team and could be dangerous in the NCAA tourney. Should be a close game tonight vs USF but should be a win also. Then on to Notre Dame who is in contention for a #1 seed in the NCAA tourney. Would be a nice to avenge the loss to them earlier in the year when ND played with 6 players (refs wore ND jerseys that night, they were atrocious). It's good to be excited about the team in March again! Good job Mick...he deserves some credit. HE took over a horrible situation at UC with only 2 scholarship players. Fielded a team pretty much made up of all JUCO's his first year and has built the program to this. Kudos little man!
If Yancy plays the rest of the year the way he did against Georgetown and Xavier UC will be a team no one wants to face.
They cab beat any team in the country if Yancy plays the way he did against Xavier. He was out of his mind but it goes to show you how much talent he has. If he could maintain his level of intensity, he would be unstoppable. He just doesn't realize how big and strong he is. He's not going to realize it overnight but hopefully coming into next year he starts to figure things out. A win Saturday against G-town would be huge.
-
No doubt about it, they're in the tourney after the Marquette win....now it's just trying to improve seeding in the B-EAST tourny and the big dance. Win Sat vs Georgetown will mean for sure that they get a bye in the B-EAST tourney. A loss and they may still be able to have a bye depending on WVU, Georgetown, Marquette and Villanova results. Nice job by the team this year to fight through alot of adversity. Hope they can continue to play with intensity.
-
Thomas isn't a bad player but he's a dumb player. He doesn't have basketball awareness. Makes sense though as he started playing later on in his childhood than 99% of kids. He's a face the basket player ........ unfortunately he's 6'11" and doesn't have any ball handling skills. Thursday should be fun. Can't wait!
Dion Dixon has turned into a solid player, but Rashad Bishop has vanished the past few games.
That's the beautiful thing about this team. They have 8 or even 9 guys who could realistically lead the team in scoring on any given night. Jacquon Parker has gone from being a starter to being the 10th man. This team plays with energy and passion. They hustle like Huggins' teams and play their heart out. They're active on offense and defense. That's all anyone could ask of them. UC should be 14-1 or 15-0 going into the heart of B-EAST play depending on the Xavier game. I think it will be 15-0. Justin Jackson is going to be a fan favorite before the year's over. Incredible find for Mick. Dion Dixon played all summer with NBA guys and his game reflects that. He gets to the hole and draws fouls consistently. With him, it's all about confidence as he's got the athleticism and skill.

Haha...yeah, I kinda forgot about the thread to be honest. I usually don't come into this part of the forums. We'll find out a little about this team with the upcoming games. Nice to be excited about UC ball again.
-
Time to revive this thread. The team looks much more cohesive this year. Chemistry is HUGE in basketball and this team seems to have better chemistry with no "stars" as opposed to standing around and watching Lance and Deonta last year. I also love the hustle this year. Mick hopefully has grown as a coach. Justin Jackson is my favorite Bearcat. Cashmere has improved nicely as has Dixon and Bishop. Bishop will be our MVP this year IMO. Add Yancy and Ibrahima and you've got a pretty decent roster. Kilpatrick needs to work on allowing the game come to him as it seems as if he's pressing at times. Understandable for a freshman though. He'll gain more experience and settle down. He's a scorer.....we'll need him to do just that in B-EAST play. So far this year, I like what I see as far as progression. And even though Oklahoma isn't as good as years past, they're still a nice team to play to gauge where you're at. Then Miami (OH) at Millet Hall and Crosstown Shootout. Should be fun.

Bob Huggins ........... love that guy!
i would love if they went after a big name coach which im sure everyone wants that. i want us to be back on the map man. this was a Basketball college, now it's Football. don't get me wrong, im very happy with the football program and all, but we need to get our hoops back on son. i remember when i was a student and would stand in line for tickets and go see K-mart and Melvin go crazy out there. good ol days
I remember those days too.......
i want mick cronin gone now. he sucks big time.
I've felt that way for a long time this year but I think the smart thing to do would be to give him his 5th year (next year). He took over a disaster of a situation and has at least brought UC to the middle of the B-East pack. At the time of him taking over, everyone expected an NCAA tourney team by his 5th year. Losing Vaughn will make this team better as he's a huge liability on defense and makes the offense stagnant when he runs the point. Also, next year Mick won't have the inexperience excuse to throw out there after losing close games. Also, I think if he's fired after this year, there would be at least 2 transfers in Lance and Cashmere......who will both be counted on heavily next year to initiate the offense and score. I think it's in the best long term interest to keep him another year. He'd better produce next year though.....
