Replacement battery issue

Just went to purchase a replacement battery for a Polaris Ranger.  The only one they had that matched the one I took out came in a "do it yourself" package.  I had to add the acid myself and then charge the battery for 12 hours before I could use it.  I have been buying batteries for 30 years and have never seen anything like this.  What would I have done if I did not have a battery charger?

Seems to me that forcing people to play with acid is gong to lead to some problems.  The worst part was that the bottle that contained the acid did not have a spout.  I had to clip the tip off a nipple and stick a little plastic tube on it to pour the acid into the battery.  And sure enough the little tube popped off in the middle of the job and sprayed acid everywhere.

And while the battery had a "fill line" it was not really clear enough to see thsough to tell exactly how much was in the battery.
