  1. In the moment, it was a sound choice. If developmental metrics are involved, it has way more ceiling than floor.

In longer-term, I doubt strongly that he will bust out. There are enough good things now to merit that he will be at the very least a decent pro. He’s a natural RT—which merits the choice for development also. But reading some bloviating media yakkers—they are creeping in on the “athletic enough for LT”. Don’t go anywhere near that until you find out what you have at RT.

Nobody has said anything about the Bengals going back on a verbal deal, including Trey.

He signed an extension and then had a career year so thinks it should get him another raise. But the team can't give every player a yearly raise who outperforms their contract, especially with a salary cap.

He made the wrong bet on himself by accepting too little and now wants a mulligan. Tough shit.

I will predict that, once some sports “journalists” dig into the background, that it will be revealed that there were discussions regarding a real multi year deal, but then they dropped off or discontinued. You never see this out-of-the-blue pronouncement without something having occurred previously.

Aaaand suddenly the DE's are in play in round 1?

It does seem like a serious dick move if this was only communicated to the team in the past couple of days... but definitely something an agent would do as a power play.

Or, the FO promised to do an actual multi year deal, and then said they “couldn’t because of no money” bollocks. This is being intimated. This didn’t come out of nowhere—I’m seeing a boiling over from multiple rebuffs regarding said deal. The “extension” was supposedly a bridge to long-term.

Not sure why everyone always jumps on the side of management when these blowups happen.

It's a selfish move for Trey to pull this shit the night before the draft, when the team has more important things to worry about. That already leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I hope Mike & Duke tell him he can play for his current deal or get fucked. The Bengals need to stand their ground or they will have every player demanding a raise and trying to hold them hostage.

It’s a business. Nobody who has direct communications with the FO, ever complains to the press unless being rebuffed more than a few times privately.

Saw this sort of thing with James Harden and PHL after last season. There were contract talks, and then there were public accusations by The Beard against the 76er GM for “lying to (me)” about getting a deal done. It was over at that point.

Likely the same now for Trey. This will not end well.
