  1. I think you need to try and keep as many of your homegrown proven players through their second contracts as you can. Considering the way they’ve drafted, they won’t be giving many second contracts to anyone after Tee. Ja’Marr is the only one that comes to mind and the big cap hits for him won’t kick in until after his fifth year. I think the fifth year is in the $21M due to his pro bowl nominations so there is some overlap.

I don’t think it’s about whether or not they want to pay him though. It’s about how much they are willing to guarantee. Stealers didn’t guarantee any out year money to anyone until Watt. The Bengals had never done it outside of Burrow. The Vikings reportedly don’t want to do it for a non-QB. A lot of these owners don’t want to tie that additional money up in escrow. Imagine this is going to be a big issue next year in the Ja’Marr extension talks.

Guaranteed aside - they should try like hell. I believe Goodberry said teams that have a 15 yard play during their drive score over 50% of the time. I can’t imagine letting a guy that can produce those plays get to the open market if you can help it. Especially when there’s only one other guy on offense right now that can do it.

  2. That’s actually a pretty good point that people don’t think about. Probably not much of a curve there but I’ve worked with guys who had a natural reaction to pull their finger early and others who couldn’t get the laces spun. Guessing his lack of holding was a reason the Bengals targeted Carmada two years ago and left without a punter once he got snatched.

That's a good question Clapton, not entirely sure. I feel like I've read somewhere that their initial get-up and first several steps are evaluated moreso than their top speed/overall time. I would imagine that for plays requiring down field blocking it might be helpful to see how quickly they can get to their spots? Just spitballing here, curious if anyone else knows more.

Yep - 10 yard splits are good to know, but top speed/overall athleticism such as relative athleticism score (RAS) to determine if tape matches.

Think over 90% of AP’s this year had a RAS over 8.00.

Why would they not just ask him to lessen the number of years too? It's simply not in their DNA to redo a guys contract and cut him. The only time I can recall that happening was Maualuga?

By the way the girls at the bar this year aren't all that better looking than Joe, and that includes the draft. Which makes the talk of cutting him even more silly. Dobbins? The guy can't stay healthy.

What does Joe get out of lessening the years? He has no incentive to do that and the Bengals had no incentive to do it with absolutely nothing behind him. Joe covers his own ass with the early roster bonus.

It's not a matter of just changing it for Mixon, this also effects Burrow. When the linemen are not left on a island and can work together the blocking improved. When you can run play action pass it forces the defenders to take that extra second to have to think about what you are going to do, that effect the running game and the passing game. Ryan Clarke did a whole segment on this that I wish I could find.

Let's put it this way, what do you think is easier replacing the Oline with guys that win one on one matchups or asking Joey B to run under center a bit more than normal?

Nobody wants to be critical of Joes game around here and suggest he has more he can put in his toolbox. I'm saying it. Joe could be an all time great if he can add this to his game even if its only enough to make defenses guess more.

They literally reworked his deal so it would be a 2 year deal, they could have done it so he would have gotten the money in 1 year, they didn't. He's not going to be cut.

What? It was a pay cut in his final two years. Why would they ask him to take less money but only lessen it in year 2? They gave themselves a small dead cap hit in the final year to get out of the contract if they wanted and Joe’s team got the early roster bonus in there so he’s not capital F fucked when the Bengals flirt with every other girl at the bar and strike out.

You are making my point for me.

If we do not want to start rookies, that means we either have to spend money FAs outside of the organization or draft really well so that guys are starting after their rookie year. You specifically have said we do not draft well (for Oline I agree other positions not as much) that means we would have to find guys in FA, who are going to cost more than guys on their rookie deals.

Tyler, Reader, Cheedo, Williams and a bunch of cheap TEs leaving. Who do you replace them with?

Hubbard and Hendrickson coming off soon. I'd assume/hope that Murphy steps into one of those spots, I'm hoping that Ossai can bounce back to take the other spot, but he hasn't earned it yet.

Joes money hits next year, Jamar is going to get paid, Taylor Britt needs to be extended. If we do Tee long term and we use the money on him that we are getting back from the guys I listed then that means you're going to have to find replacements for the other guys and those replacements, having less money to spend because we spent it on Joe, Jamar, and Tee, means that the quality of FAs you are going to be able to get is going to be less because the FA asks are going to go up across the board. If DJ Reader was still the same age today as when we signed him, he would be asking for more money today then he did then. That's the inflation that is happening across the league.

This means if we do not want to start rookies, we have to take bridge type FAs and get better at drafting. Letting Tee walk or trading him means we can use that money on a guy that might not be a bridge type FA.

The Bengals and Jessie were not close because of contract guarantees, Jessie literally said he was leaving 20mil on the table if he stayed here, he just became one of the highest paid safties in league history, the Bengals were not close to doing that, he may have wanted more in guarantees but the overall money was not close, that's why they didn't extent him.

There have been multiple guys who have said the Bengals were in the $15m AAV ballpark. If he was leaving $20M on the table - he was talking about guaranteed money.

  7. I dont need a calculator. The Bengals would have two years of big cap allocation for these guys with a multitude of vet contracts expiring. I mean if you name a vet outside of OBJ, their contract is probably up within the next two years and the Jamarr extension won’t kick in for three years.

It’s not about paying two receivers whether people agree with that or not. The Bengals want to pay them both. They don’t want to guarantee out years. Same as it was with Jessie. They made an aggressive offer but the guarantees weren’t good enough.

  8. Even if he does run better when they put him deep - why do you think the Bengals would change their offense for Joe Mixon? He’s got a ton of mileage, he doesn’t break off big runs, and teams just legitimately do not care if we want to take the ball out of our quarterbacks hands. They would be thrilled.

And they didn’t extend him. They told him to take a pay cut. No one is fooling themselves. It’s a very real possibility and PDJ has alluded to it again and he was spot on with saying the pay cut/outright cut was coming. I’m not sure how else to spell it out for you. It may not come to fruition, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t discussing it.
