Mentioned elsewhere we have not drafter O linemen high for a number of years.

Jonah was Jonah... he seemed to do OK but top level D linemen ate him up.  Unfortunately in our division

he say Garret and Watt et al twice a year.

Who knows what Carman's story is?  Heart not in it?

Last one taken high  before that was Ogbuhei and was certainly nothing to write home about.

And I am not as down on Volson as a lot of people.

Rambling, too, and lost my train of thought... what I get for posting from work.

Well, we added to the bad Uggbuhei pick with our next pick, Jake Fisher.

Yeah it's interesting to me that they want to be 6-7 deep on the DL with solid players but try to squeak by with like 4.33 starting quality OL at best.  They obviously put a lot of value on the one group but go scratch & dent on the opposites matching up with them for every snap.  How is "keeping guys fresh" the goal everywhere but for what is probably the most physically grueling positions in the game?  Doesn't add up.

Realistically they need 6 average or better OL to get through a season without there being a weakness because someone is bound to miss games. Can't tell where though so more like 7 assuming one of them can play G as well as T or C. Right now we've got what, 3 of them before the talent level goes over a cliff?

I agree with the lack of OL depth (and quality of the starters) but note that you need more depth at DL becuse those players rotate in/out each game whereas the starting OL plays the entire game barring injury.

I'm somewhere in between you and T-Dub/Spicoli on this subject...I like to be like Switzerland :)...but I will say that PFF may be just fine as "A SOURCE" for a player's talent evaluation and hence why it has NFL and college subscriptions, but some people seem to think it is "THE DEFINITIVE SOURCE"...BIG difference.  Lots of other things need to be considered, game context, team context, heart/passion, performance when game is on the line, and like SheBengal says things like football/game IQ, leadership, etc.

I'll use Sam Hubbard as an example.  He's not a guy that shows up on the stat sheet like Trey does and prolly doesn't have great numbers on PFF and he's been said to be an under-performer in another thread here and maybe would even be cut if on another team.  That's just udder BS in my mind...his value goes way beyond sack numbers and PFF grades...I sure as hell don't want to lose him.  OLine is another glaring PFF example...maybe a player has a diminished PFF grade because of the team/game context dictates that he play next to one of worst linemen in the league, or because the coach is using a scheme that doesn't match the skillset of the players.  I'm not saying that's always the case, just citing examples of how PFF grades and stats can be very deceiving.

"Lies, damn lies, and statistics"  -Mark Twain

Sometime back on Sirius radio, I think it was either Korean or the Ketchup Whisperer said all teams use PFF as a resource not as a Bible , it is another set of eyes that looks at the players. Kind of a cross check.

No doubt teams also look at some of the draft sites if they know the site’s previous analysis was good. Another cross check.

  4. On one of the draft sites I was reaging up on the RT's - they noted Mims is strong at pass blocking but still learning run blocking whereas Faugua (sp) is strong at run blocking but still learning pass blocking.

Several sites have Kingsley Suamataia (OT, BYU) rising and Brugler has him going at #27 in round one in his two round mock. Note, he played this past season at LT but the previous sason at RT.

And an indication of the overall need for OL in the league, in his first round mock, Bruglar has 11 OL taken. His mocvks tend to go more by position need then by his own ranking. Eseentially, OL is like QB now - can get a bit over-drafted due to shortage of good ones.

We just drafted Murphy can we let him show something before we start talking about getting another DE.

True but DE is part of the DL - and you can NEVER have enough DL or OL. Period. Someone posted a few days ago we need to see how FA falls, pehaps we solidify the DT spot with FA and then if a goos DE is avaiable at the 18 spot we take him. I have no issue with that. Hubbard and Trey are probably both a bit over used and having good young backups would help them as well.

Frank Pollack is definitely an issue. If I’m not mistaken, normally the OL coach is responsible for the running game/scheme as well.  If that’s the case here, even if it isn’t, FP needs to move on and find his life’s work.

The OL never seems to match the offensive identity? Scheme is a big issue though and when we saw the Browns do OK with 3 guys out that speaks volumes.

I have no little issue with our scouting staff BUT I wish they could add 1 guy who could f*cking properly scout the OL. Just 1 guy.....

Raiders have a staff of 25 and the Pats have 17 and neither have drfated worth a crap over the last 5 years. I will give our smaller staff credit for quality
