Wasn't sure where to put this, so I guess here is as good a place as any...

With today's announcement of the (apparent) death of Sports Illustrated, people on X are posting their favorite SI memories. That got me thinking about an issue and article that was significant to me. It happened during my favorite Bengals season of all time: 1981.

When the December 14, 1981 issue arrived in my mailbox, I'm sure I couldn't believe what I was seeing, because there on the cover was an actual Bengals player, the first to ever be on the cover of SI, posed in the cool new jersey and striped helmet. But even more amazing than the cover was a quote from Collinsworth, where I saw the word "Bengals" and "Super Bowl" mentioned in the same paragraph for the first time in my life.

At the time of that interview, the team had just beaten Houston to go to 6-3, one week before the shocking beatdown of the Chargers in San Diego. So to predict a Super Bowl for a team that had gone 4-12, 4-12, and 6-10 was pretty bold. I couldn't believe what I was reading, but I liked it.

I had this hanging in my dorm room.

I'm always drawn to players with heart, in-game passion/attitude, and results when it really counts, i.e real-world context...stats/algorithms/combineNumbers/etc fail miserably in many of those cases...sometimes they are in sync but often times they do not.

Not to mention in-game intelligence and leadership.

Hence, the reason why I would take Burrow over Herbert every time. (Which I can't seem to get through to my hubby no matter how hard I try.)

Hmmmmmm the Browns are holding assistant coaches accountable. I wonder what that's like?

Too bad they didn't get rid of Bill Callahan, too.

I'm kind of surprised at this, considering all of the injuries that they had on their offense, and the lack of talent at WR (aside from Amari Cooper) that they had to work with. I guess Kevin Stefanski is taking all of the credit for their success in spite of the injuries, especially since his name is being bandied about as a COTY winner. (Which I think is going to go to DeMeco Ryans,, or it should.)

In all honesty, I really have none of the animosity towards the CFT as I once did for the former team known as the Browns. They are a just a facsimile.. nothing to really loathe.

I find the new and improved CFT fan nothing close to the original woofers either. They are mildly annoying this week, but their bombast is more a “look at us…we’re somebody now”

You don't live with one of their fans and didn't raise one.

Although, they have been quiet this week (at least hubby has. I haven't heard from the son since Monday.)

I have my ticket stub framed along with the game before that (I think that was where the Bill faked injury

to slow down the hurry up) as well as the Super Bowl.

That was Joe Nash with Seattle in 1988 faking the injuries to slow down the hurry up offense. The Bills the following week whined about the hurry up so the Bengals were informed right before the game that they couldn't use it.

We did beat Buffalo in the first playoff game in 1981 before playing San Diego. San Diego the week before played in the extremely hot (90 degrees) overtime game in Miami and them came to Cincinnati to play in below -0- conditions.

Of the teams left, who don’t you want to win?

For me, it’s the Browns, Stealers, Cowboys, Bills…in that order.

Browns - never been to a SB and I want that to continue…it’s something we have over them

    Stealers - no explanation needed

Cowboys - I don’t want Dak to be considered better than Joe…and I hate all of the coverage

Bills - I don’t want Josh Allen to be considered better than Joe

All of the above plus Baltimore and SF.
