Jason Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 Josh Huston???? I like him, but kicker has to be below the bottom of our list. I'm also surprised that Nate Salley is on the list and Donte Whitner is not. And as much as I like Mangold, I just don't see the Bengals taking him. We have good center candidates, and I would be surprised if he lasts to our 2nd round pick, so we would have to take him in 1, and that IS NOT happening. The ONLY way I could see us taking him is if he is still there when we pick in 3.

So they probably try to interview players at the Senior Bowl and everything so they dont have to 'waste' an interview at the combine. Just a guess, I dont know.
Guest starkesn Posted February 22, 2006 Report Posted February 22, 2006 I would guess it's because of his kickoff ability. I can't remember, but didn't he have like 25 touchbacks in a row at some point last year. If we can afford an extra roster spot on a kickoff specialist, it might be a good pick in the seventh round or as a undrafted free agent.

LOL there's a project at WR (even though he aparently took the young WR's at Penn State and personally helped "coach" them)...our own Slash? Hmmmm...

He doesn't just force them to down it in the endzone, he kicks it OUT of the endzone. Moving back five yards wouldn't effect that. If Marvin is not pleased with Grahms kickoffs, why not look at the best option to fix that in the draft. I was simply pointing out why we MIGHT be looking at him.
Guest Bengals1181 Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 I'm guessing that either they are looking at Mangold for a guard position, or that they are considering moving Wilkerson or Ghiuchiuc to guard. Having three centers on the line wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Centers are supposed to be one of the more intelligent players on the field.
TheBZ Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006
I think I read that each team is only allowed 60 interviews at the combine. Just a guess, I dont know.
This sounds like a safe assumption to me. Their 'Top 60' at the Combine may not involve many of the guys they spoke to or saw at the Senior Bowl. Although, we should probably take careful aim at the Juniors listed up there...We have a tendency to draft someone young each year. Meant to get Jason's quote as well re: Mangold. It wouldn't take much trading down to be in Mangold's range. Doesn't the first C usually go around #30 or so? BZ
That's cool...Nugent put them through the endzone too in college, and he's not in the NFL...I just remember BengalSIS going off some people because everyone was salivating over Nugent's kickoffs and she stepped in to defend her brother (don't blame her)...and she was right about Nugent not getting the same kickoffs in the NFL...I think the biggest difference is the ball a kicker is allowed to use at each level, it is easier to kick a beat up ball that doesn't even have the NCAA stripes on it anymore compared to a NFL Wilson straight out of the box and is hard as a rock... But you are right, they are interviewing them for a reason, just don't know exactly what
EnglishBengal Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 After looking at the website itself, I noticed Anthony Smith was near the top of many teams' lists, including Cincy. God I hope we get him in round 2. That is assuming we don't sign a FA safety.

Guest Bengals1181 Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 I would definately consider Shockley in the later rounds as a "A.R.E." However, that would depend on free agency and our other picks. Punt returner/shifty WR is more of a pressing need right now.
CarsonDaMan Posted February 23, 2006 Report Posted February 23, 2006 Take that list of players with a grain of salt. The Bengals wanting to interview does of course mean they are interested. But it mostly means these are the specific individuals they have questions about. For example I'm sure they'd like to know how McNeal, Shockley, and Robinson feel about playing other positions or returning kicks. Others they may question their character and would like to meet face to face. They didn't interview Pollack last year and still made him their first rounder. They knew everything they needed to know about him so no sense in using up an interview.
