If We Draft Manny Lawson,

For the love of God, Manny Lawson does not fit on our defense. He's too damn skinny to play defensive end in a 4-3, and he is terrible against the run. He is a pass rushing outside linebacker on a 3-4 defense (Keep in mind that we run a 4-3.) We took our pass rushing outside linebacker last year in the first round, and Pollack actually has the size and skill to be a factor against the run.

Why do you want him so bad? Is it because of his combine? Have you actually ever seen him play?

I've seen Manny play about 3 or 4 times. I've only watched a few teams alot of times this year. Somehow i saw Boston College and NC State alot, thus, I know alot about Manny and Will Blackmon, and I want them both. Alot. Him and Mario are monsters. And he's too small? Robert Mathis, anybody? This guy will be an abosolute monster in the league, and it wets my pants to even think about him on our squad.

I still think this guy's too fast not to play LB...maybe if we could get him and slim him down like Pollack it would be almost as good as having a Lavar. (please move to the 3-4 - we have Sam Adams to play NT!!!)
SUMMARY
Lawson was a tough player to get a good feel for because he struggled to consistently pressure the quarterback from his defensive end alignment, but was clearly an elite athlete who has the tools to play somewhere in the NFL. From watching him on film, he does not look like he has the frame to add the necessary bulk/weight to be able to hold up as a defensive end -- he looks much more like a linebacker on the 'Hoof'. No question whatever team drafts him will need to be patient as he learns the linebacker position, but his explosiveness and athleticism will enable him to contribute as a pass rusher and on special teams. He was a dangerous punt rusher at N.C. State and he will be a very good special teams player as a rookie. Overall, teams should be careful not to over-draft Lawson based on his tremendous workout numbers, but he doe have athleticism, explosiveness and playing speed. He is going to need a season or two as a backup linebacker before he becomes comfortable playing behind the line of scrimmage. He would be best suited to go to a team that plays a 3-4 defense, where he could play the hybrid rush-linebacker position and take advantage of his ability to rush the quarterback from a wide alignment.

STRONG POINTS
Lawson is a very good athlete with all the physical tools. He has the foot quickness, acceleration and playing speed that are hard to find. He consistently hustles and chases hard in pursuit and has the playing speed and closing burst to finish plays when he gets close. He has very good size for a linebacker and will be a strong player at the point of attack. He has long arms to jolt blockers and can stay free to make plays. His experience at defensive end will combine with his natural explosiveness and athleticism to make him a dangerous pass rusher from his linebacker alignment.

WEAKNESSES
Obviously, the biggest negative is that Lawson played defensive end at N.C. State and will have to learn to play linebacker in the NFL. At defensive end, he did not consistently explode off the ball and he must show that he can get started moving quickly right at the snap from his linebacker alignment. He must use his hands more consistently to aggressively punch blockers to stay free and make tackles. He has virtually no experience in coverage and will need to really learn and adjust to playing behind the line of scrimmage.

I just think he would be a terrible fit on our defense. Obviously he is freakishly athletic, but the chances of a switch to the 3-4 alignment are slim.

Mathis is 3 inches shorter than Lawson, and they weigh about the same (235-240.) Lawson is just kind of tall and lanky. Mathis is terrible against the run, but a great situational pass rusher.

It would be nice to have a Robert Mathis. If they can find a guy in the fifth round just like Mathis was drafted, then go get him. At the same time, Mathis isn't even a starter for the Colts, he only comes in on passing downs. You really want to blow a first rounder on a guy who will be nothing more than a rush specialist his entire career?

I'm pretty sure I'm aware of his negatives. I'm also well aware of his many positives. His many, many positives. Like being a big, sexy ass mofo, who can turn on even the most heterosexual of men.

The dude is 6'5. You think he won't be able to bulk up in the next few years of his career? You think he won't improve against the run? Well, fuck it. I guess people we draft just aren't allowed to have weaknesses in their first year. :boring:

I never said that we're going to get him. I just really want him. I can get next to no info on the draft, which kinda blows.
