LB Quincy Black ~ New Mexico
Athletic linebacker, who got his first steady dose of playing time in 2005 and fared well -- 63 tackles and 3.5 TFL's. He excelled in coverage, posting 5 PD's and 1 interception. Perhaps the best defensive prospect to come out of New Mexico since Brian Urlacher was drafted in the first round of the 2000 draft. Although, at this point, Black isn't considered a real high draft pick, a great senior season and superior workouts could elevate his draft stock significantly. Black is 6' 2", 235 pounds and possesses a 42" vertical leap and tremendous brute strength -- 335 bench press.

All-MWC Candidate

NEW MEXICO:
Returning starter who took over the safety/linebacker hybrid Lobo position, made famous at UNM by All-American Brian Urlacher in 1998 and '99...usually lines up between linebacker and safety depth and has significant pass coverage responsibilities...at 6-3, 227, he is an intimidating physical presence in the secondary who boasts NFL-caliber athletic ability...was listed by ESPN.com's NFL Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. as one of the nation's top senior OLBs during the summer...2006 team captain...quickly established himself as a big time playmaker against the run and pass last season in his first year as a starter (OLB)...has proven to be a real steal for the Lobos...was a late addition to the team, transferring from Harper College in Palatine, Ill. in the summer of 2004...a second team All-American at defensive end for the Harper Hawks, helping the team win the junior college national title in 2003...holds the LB vertical jump record at UNM with a 42-inch leap...well-spoken and well-read individual who has maintained a tremendous attitude despite enduring much tragedy in his life off the field.

I like the sound of this guy. Whether it be for depth or future starting material, we would do well to draft him in the middle rounds (or possibly as high as round 2 even, given his good combine results). Sounds like a good character guy with a work ethic, and does something alot of our existing LB's can't do well at present - cover. And to top it all off he run's a 4.5 forty.

Here are his numbers from the combine:
40: 4.42 (#1)
Vert: 41.5" (#1)
Bench: 24 reps (About average)
Broad jump: 10'4" (#1)
3 cone: 6.86 (#1)

Yeah he's a freak of nature, but his college numbers don't reflect that. When I look at a linebacker prospect, I look at tackles for loss first, then everything else. His career 4.5 tackles for loss is downright pathetic. I know he played a hybrid linebacker-safety position, but he has only 1.5 career sacks, and 9 passes broken up with 4 interceptions. He does have a butt load of tackles, but most were downfield. He just doesn't seem like a very good playmaker despite the crazy physical ability.

I don't know much about him, so there may be reasons that his stats don't reflect his ability. From what I've read though he has a load of potential, and has the speed to cover Wr's and RB's out of the backfield. He certainly has the measurables you want in a LB. I wouldn't be disappointed if we picked him up in the second, or if were somehow able to get a high 3rd.
