Joe Nuxhall begins his 63rd baseball season Monday the way he has for 40 years: in the Reds radio booth.

Nuxhall, 78, will call the sixth and seventh innings on WLW-AM (700) Monday, the first Opening Day for Marty Brennaman to work with his son, Thom.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's a big deal," said Nuxhall, who has been undergoing various medical tests since returning from Sarasota, Fla., March 22. He began chemotherapy in February for a recurrence of lymphoma in his left leg.

Opening Day is so important to the Ol' Left-hander that Marty Brennaman offered to skip the chance to do it with his son so Nux could be on the air, said John Allen, Reds chief operating officer.

Nuxhall has missed only two Opening Days since 1952, his first full season as a Reds pitcher. He played with Kansas City in 1961 and the Los Angeles Angels in 1962. Nuxhall moved to radio in 1967, after retiring as a player. The Fairfield resident teamed with Brennaman for 31 seasons, through 2004.

Marty Brennaman will do the first two and last two innings Monday. Thom will call the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Nuxhall also will broadcast the second game of the season against the Cubs at 7:10 p.m. Wednesday. He's scheduled to work 17 games this season, including his first visit to Seattle's Safeco Field. That will be the 60th ballpark Nuxhall has either played in or broadcast from.

"The only two I haven't worked in or played in are in Baltimore and Toronto. I'd like to get those two," he says. The Reds do not play the Orioles or Blue Jays in interleague games this season.

On Thursday, after a 12:35 p.m. Reds-Cubs game, Reds CEO Bob Castellini, Nick Clooney and other celebrities will kick off the Joe Nuxhall Hope Project fund-raiser with a 7 p.m. dinner at Jungle Jim's Oscar Event Center in Fairfield.

Silent auction items include a miniature bronze replica of Nuxhall's Great American Ball Park statue.

Tickets ($125 per person; $200 a couple) are available by calling 513-984-1200[/quote]
