Team still has eye on closer Hermanson

BY JOHN FAY | JFAY@ENQUIRER.COM

The Reds watched free-agent right-hander Dustin Hermanson throw Wednesday, but general manager Wayne Krivsky wouldn't say more than that.

Hermanson, 34, was the closer for the world champion Chicago White Sox for most of 2005. He saved 24 games and had a 2.04 ERA that year.

He missed all but 62/3 innings last season with a bad back and has been throwing for clubs in Arizona to show his back is sound. All reports are that he has checked out OK.

"He's a bona fide closer," Reds manager Jerry Narron said. "But it's hard to tell for a scout watching him throw one time. I'm sure his velocity is not what it would be."

Right now, the Reds are planning to use David Weathers and Mike Stanton as their closer tandem.

Hermanson, who is from Springfield, Ohio, would be an interesting addition to the mix.

"He's got a track record," Narron said. "I plan to talk to the scout who saw him. He missed almost a full year. That can be tough to come back from."

GRIEVANCE UPDATE: Krivsky said the club still plans to file a grievance against the Washington Nationals over the July trade between the two teams.

The Reds insist that the Nats did not share all the details of Gary Majewski's shoulder problems before the trade.

"It's in the hands of the lawyers," Krivsky said. "It's very close. Every time they're ready to file, they find some new information."

Incidentally, the Washington trainer at the time of the trade, Tim Abraham, resigned in December.

The Nationals have said Abraham was the one who passed along the information on Majewski.

At the time of Abraham's resignation, the Nats said it had nothing to do with the Reds situation.

Majewski received a cortisone shot just before the July 13 trade. He had a 12.54 ERA with the Reds in 11 appearances before going on the disabled list.[/quote]

I hope we can land him if he's healthy. He could really help shore up the pen at least through midseason when Eddie is ready to come back.

:D

It's kind of like buying "reconditioned" electronics...it will work fantastically for a time, but then shuts down and you feel like you got the shaft.
