Well, you must not like Castro either, but face it: they were brought here for defense, not for their bats, and both those guys have defense in spades. If Gonzalez has two hits every game, that's gravy no matter how many strikeouts he has.

gonzalez was brought in fo rhis defense not his bat; it will be nice not to have to watch our shortstop blow games with his errors; we have plenty of big bats in the lineup

If he has two hits every game he'll be the greatest hitter that ever lived.

Nay, he'd be the reincarnation of Davey Concepcion!

He was NEVER, and I repeat NEVER touted to be a big bat when he came here. He is a MAAAAJOR defensive upgrade from what we had, and that alone will help manufacture wins. He had 2 hits today. Do you expect him to bat 1.000? We have our best double play combination in YEARS, and you want to break it up? There is more than just hitting in baseball, whether you choose to believe so or not.

Also, in regard to Hamilton (because I sense that this is what your lineup suggestion is really about): I like him too, he is a great story, but for any of you ready to plug him in as an everyday starter right now are crazy. He's yet to even START a major league game in his life. Let him ease his way into the lineup and learn major league pitching. He'll be just fine in the long term, I do believe, but give him some time. Right now, I really like our everyday lineup we are putting on the field.

Wow you must be special  ...after today's game he is hitting .364. That would be best on the team...and he's been clutch with men on base. Not to mention he's pretty good at defense. Anything else?

wow... You are now someone I will never listen to in regards to the Reds ever again.

Gonzo Stats - Place on the reds:

AVG: .375 - tied for first with Edwin
Hits: 6 - tied for first
OBP: .421 - 4th on team

And you want to move philips to short (hasn't played there in how long?), freel to 2nd and hamilton to cf (hasn't played there in how long?) and sit out arguably the best defense ss in the league who right now is leading our team in batting average, and hits...

wow.

I said this right after he struck out for the 3rd time with men on 2nd and 3rd, i would much rather have him than rich aurilia. And yes, I am very glad we have a shortstop that wont blow games for us like last year.

This dude has one of the best gloves in all of baseball. You clearly have no clue what you are talking about.

Exactly. Any offensive production from this guy is icing on the cake.

To play the devil's advocate, though, his numbers will even out and he will bat his career avg. of .250 or so, with about 40-50 ribeyes, so let's not crown him the greatest shortstop the Reds have ever had because he has been hitting well the first week into the season.

I liked the trade when it happened, and I like it even more now. This guy is the epitome of reliable, every day shortstops. If nothing else, he gives the Reds dependability on defense as well as in the lineup. No more worrying about changing the entire lineup day to day in an effort to platoon an overaged Aurrilia with a bunch of bench players.

I do find it funny that you say this while Gonzo's bat has been big for the Reds. I was a little uncertain of the amount of money we paid him, but i did like the signing. He is one of the best defensive shortstops of all time. He doesnt have a bat, doesnt get hype, and doesnt make many spectacular looking plays. He makes hard plays look simple and rarely ever fucks up. I LOVE HAVING GONZO. Phillips and Gonzo could easily both win Gold Gloves this year. We have one of the best defensive duos in Gonzo and Phillips in MLB.

The second thing that is funny is Tracy Jones was going on today about how Gonzalez is actually a very good fastball hitter, but not as good with breaking balls. He sees a solid amount of fastballs batting in the 8 spot because he has 0 protection behind him. He tries to jump on the fastballs and foul off breaking balls. If he hits 250 or higher this year then that signing is golden. Anything less than 250 and he was overpaid. Either way i love the signing because this team wanted to improve the defense and went out and improved the defense at a tough ass position to be content with.

I played SS for much of my life and it is a tough position, the way alex gonzalez makes it look so easy is unbelievable. The man came as advertised and so far has been worth EVERY penny.

i agree with ALMOST everything you said BUT that. Hamilton could step into CF now and really outplay Freel. He seriously is a potential gold glover in CF if he started every game right now.
