San Diego State (8-4) versus Navy (9-3): HOLIDAY BOWL, San Diego; 8 PM ET; ESPN
One of the most fascinating aspects of college football, especially when compared to the pro game, is the almost endless variety of both offensive and defensive philosophies. That will certainly be on display in tonight's Holiday Bowl when San Diego State, which throws the ball around with abandon, takes on Navy which has redefined the notion of grinding it on the ground. And while both teams are very good which promises the possibility of a very entertaining, neither side has much in the way of talent for the 2011 draft. San Diego State, though, does have something of an emerging receiver in WR Vince Brown (#80, 6-0, 195), a mid-round prospect for the upcoming draft who had over 1,100 receiving yards this fall. Brown, in fact, combines with fellow senior WR DeMarco Sampson (#1, 6-2, 195), who also had over 1,100 yards through the air this fall, to give SDSU one of the better 1-2 WR combintaions in the country. However, Sampson, who struggles to break 4.7 seconds running the 40, lacks the kind of top-end speed that NFL teams are looking for in a draftable wideout, although he still should get some free-agent interest this off-season. The Aztecs actually have a third top target in redshirt freshman TE Gavin Escobar (#88, 6-5, 230) a solid underneath receiver wuth the frame to grow into a decent in-line blocker. Pulling the trigger for the Aztecs is junior QB Ryan Lindley (#14, 6-3, 220) who can get the bal downfield, but does need to improve his accuracy and decision-makng in the pocket to move up draft boards next year. And while SDSU prefers to air, they also have one of the better young runners in the country in RB Ronnie Hillman (#13, 5-9, 190), a true freshman who ran for over 1,300 yards and 14 scores this season. Unfortunately, for San Diego State, the defense is young and nowhere as talented as the offense, although SS Andew Preston (#22, 6-1, 215) and DE Ernie Lawson (#99, 6-3, 285) could attract some free agent interest. The unit's best player, though, is OLB Miles Burris (#9, 6-3, 240) who led the team in both tackles and sacks. Meanwhile, Navy hasn't had a player selected on draft day since the mid-1990s and while that isn't likely to change this coming April, the Midshipmen are just plain fun to watch as their triple-option continues to befuddle more talented opponents. And while no one from the Navy is going to be drafted this year, option QB Ricky Dobbs (#4, 6-1, 205) could get a few future free agent looks as a possible RB or safety, while safety Wyatt Middleton (#8, 6-1, 195) could play on any program in the country.

Would be tough not to like Brown at this point. 6 catches 143 yards 1td 4 minutes to go in the 1st quarter.

ESPN says
*Soft spoken hard worker who is always looking to improve his game
*Tempos routes well but rounds off too many
*Physical blocker for his size, is asked to seal the backside DE at times.
