Well the first thing I do is make damned sure that bean counter John Allen is history. No self respecting GM would accept a baseball job where your immediate superior thinks a 4-6-3 double play is some porn from the 70s. Next, I hire Rob Dibble to be my muse. I'll walk him around the park w/ a cutoff just whizzing baseballs into the seats hitting poor old women. I will also get Lou Pinella to jello wrestle Rob Dibble in a tribute to the love brawl they had in the clubhouse back in the good old days. Ok, seriously though......I do want Allen gone for sure... My baseball moves are to allow Narron and Ruhle to hang on until I find a suitable replacement. I see if Sweet Lou still has any fire in his belly or more important, any desire to leave Tampa Bay. I know he won't but I do it anyhow to let the public know I want to return to such glory. In a surprise move, I contact Barry Larkin. Why not? He already has the players respect, knows the game as well as any other, would be a wildly popular move w/ fans and players alike. Also, he is the most qualified candidate to "link" the early nineties Reds greatness to the team today.I really like this move but can the burnt bridges be mended that O'Brien and Allen torched? Think Ozzie Guillen in Chicago, how are they doing again? Jim Leyland is a name that is out there and expressed interest in coaching again. Considering he is 98 doesn't help matters. Ok, I'm exaggerating but he's pretty old. Not Lindner old, but old. No matter WHO eventually gets the job, I allow him to bring his own staff, all the way up from ball boys to the scoreboard operator. He is running the show out there and will have major input of player acquisitions and such day to day operations. Player Personnel..... This year, I dangle Aurilia and Randa for mid level pitching prospects. Neither guy will fetch anything near ready for the big show but it begins restocking the shelves that have run sparse. Both guys are signed to very affordable one year deals and Randa esp. are having very good years. I trade an outfielder. It's not Jr. His contract and age make him an impossibility to deal at this point. Take solace in the fact that he is healthy and numbers are reflecting that. He's looking pretty good out there. Dunn, Pena, and Kearns are all available. I deal one of them and make the rest everyday starters. I think Dunn would garner the highest return and the likelihood of the Reds shelling out near 10 million next year make this one a no brainer. I would require a few players in exchange, one of them being a top pitcher in the team's farm system. Pena, ditto Dunn but would accept less big league ready talent. Kearns is by far the player who can be the most productive all around. While it's true he's slumping and in AAA he is tearing the cover off the ball down there at .390+ and a handful of doubles. Yes, he's pissed the Reds are jerking him around and O'Brien isn't being forthright but hey, I'm the GM now and my first order of business is to get to Louisville myself and make sure all is well with him. He does need to lose some weight and get locked in, he seems to be doing the latter and the former will come w/ time. I don't trade him simply b/c I don't think I could get nearly as much for him as I could in the future. Not to say I will wait and deal him in the future, it's just that I still think he's going to be a hell of a player for us. Paul Wilson is gone......He's of no use to me...I offer him a job playing the saxophone w/ the guy who bangs the bongos outside of games, but that's about it. I lock Felipe Lopez up long term. The kid can swing it and leads all National League shortstops in all offensive categories. He'll get better defensively and can switch hit, what more do you want? Edwin Encarnacion is playing everyday. He has nothing left to prove at AAA, he eats pitchers alive down there. Now we need to figure out if he is Brandon Larson with cornrows or can he make the adjustments to be a good player offensively and defensively. I get Doc Kremchek to perform an EXTENSIVE checkup on Milton's left arm. He has lost about 4-5 MPH on that heater, that seems like a warm breeze now. I think something is medically wrong and if so, we might as well get in there and fix him up and get ready for next year. I chew Ryan Wagner out and tell him he is blowing a perfect opportunity to become the Reds closer for the foreseeable future. He has the nastiest stuff on the staff, I know that's not saying a whole lot but he's got great stuff. And that's just in the first two weeks of my reign.....
