I have been watching the sport for over a decade and the viewership has dropped.  Part of it has to do when NBC gets the schedule, they put more of the races on USA than NBC.  

Next year will be interesting with Amazon Prime coming into the network fold and TNT returning.

I think the closest driver to popularity is Kyle Larson, in terms of wins.  He doesn't get the sponsors because of this:

Michael Jordan being part owner of 23XI Racing is huge for the sport and he attends multiple races, as recently as last weekend at Darlington.
