Perry on IR; WR Cherry signed
12-29-04, 11:15 a.m.

Cherry
The Bengals today placed RB Chris Perry on the Reserve/Injured list and signed rookie WR Matt Cherry to the 53-player roster from the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad. Cherry (6-1, 203; Akron) entered the NFL following the 2004 Draft, signing with Jacksonville as a college free agent. He played in two preseason games for Jacksonville, with 1 catch for 4 yards. He was waived Aug. 31 by the Jaguars and signed Sept. 7 to the Jacksonville practice squad. Perry has not played since Oct. 17, due to an abdominal injury suffered Oct. 20 during practice.

Bummer. I hope this Cherry guy is better than Broussard and Mann
who we have lost off our practice squad though. :mellow:
Ya, another one.  I think the fact that we signed him should shed some light on the future of Perry. :huh:
[post="31136"][/post]
huh?

Cherry is a WR, Perry has a bright future in Cincinnati...

The signing of Cherry has nothing to do with Perry other than the fact that now that Perry is on IR, we had an extra spot for someone...

Well they are prob just scouting talent if he signed a one year deal no signing bonus. we only pay him for one game and we see what kind of talent he has in practice. its probly what they did with most of these guys just a one year contact vet minimum. It shouldnt effect the cap

I know, and I get confused because the only time I have seen Perry he has been catching balls and not running.

My bad.

[post="31210"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
Someone, I think Bengalady, said it would effect Chris Perry... and I said if it is going to have any effect on anyone for next season, it would be Peter Warrick...

Could Cherry be a pick-up JUST in case Warrick cannot go next season?

If Cherry turns out to be a decent WR, then the Bengals won't have to waste a draft pick to try and replace him (warrick).

Not saying that is what he is for... just something that could happen.
Alright i am with u now.. Yeah that is a possibility but i dont see us pulling a practice squader and turning him into the next pdub.... he might be an upgrade over walter or patric johnson.. so we will see
[post="31212"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
Unless this Cherry guy can play special teams, I don't think we will be with the club next season (maybe the practice squad).

Walters came through for us last Sunday, and he can play special teams...

If we end up drafting a WR, I think Walters will be gone, too...

If somehow Rudi leaves and Perry is to be our main RB...I can guarantee this...the line on the Bengals next spring will be this:

"The Bengals have one of the best young QB's in Carson Palmer and with his receiving corps should be able to air the ball out. Carson carved up such stellar defenses as Baltimore and New England and will feast on weak defenses next year. Problem is he might have to throw 40 times a game because the Bengals let there new franchise rushing record holder go and are banking their hopes on a guy who hasn't played since last October, can't participate in workouts until May Mini-Camps and has a career average per rush of a half yard to go with a career rushing total of one yard. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bengals return Nate Webster from IR and they are loaded with 2nd year talent and potential future Pro Bowlers Madieu Williams, Landon Johnson and Keiwan Ratliff as well as key young stars like Robert Geathers, Langston Moore and Caleb Miller. Now with the addition of DT _____________ and S _____________ the Bengals run defense should be greatly improved. This all being said, their potentially explosive offense has a huge question mark in the running game and with Pittsburgh and Baltimore in their division, the Bengals will probably improve on their 8-8 record, but still finish third in the AFC North"

Whichever side of the Rudi fence you've decided to sit, there is no way the respect from national media will come with such a huge question mark on Perry...Nobody in their right mind would pick us over Pittsburgh...maybe Baltimore depending how they view our defensive improvement...
Nothing surprises me anymore....

they always seem to sign someone
in a position that we are stacked in...
wonder why another WR?
I quit guessing...I'm far from
an expert and half the time probably
don't know what I'm talking about
anyway...

Kick Returner.

They take whoever looks the most promising from someone's practice squad.

Yes they would. If we get some guys who can stop the run, our passing offense is much better than Pittsburghs.

We'll be fine without Rudi.

I dont think we really need a kick returner. Cliff Russell has been imporving and very good for us. Maybe we can put a another guy back there besides Watson sine he will play a larger role in our offense next year with Perry if Rudi isnt signed.

Watson will not be a Bengal next year IMO.

Cliff didn't do anything until we played against the Giants. Where was he all season?

He hasn't been with us all season. I believe his first game with us was the Denver game Monday night when they started him opposite of Chad to surprise the defense. I think that was the Denver game. But anyway, I've seen him have a few good kick returns.
