D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Alan Etter said the men were about 30 feet below ground when they were attacked by McBeam when something broke loose. One man was hit across the back; the other was hit in the head. Despite the cowardly attack, Etter said the injuries were serious but not life-threatening. "The one who was hit in the head was a little more serious," he said, "but he was conscious and able to speak. They'll do an MRI on him." One victim was quoted as saying, "Jesus, what a douchebag." The accident happened about 8 a.m. in the 900 block of 11th Street, NW. Rescue crews used a crane to lift the men out of the construction site. The incident caused an already congested area to be even more congested for about an hour. Etter said traffic was now back to normal. D.C. Metropolitan Police suspect McBeam, a mentally challenged mascot for the pissburgh Steelers, was unsatisfied with the whack job put on Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell in the two teams' recent pre-season NFL game.
