LCD MONITOR ISSUE

Recommended Posts

well, i was browsing ebay, looking for a moderately priced 17" lcd for the woman found one for $130, bought it, apparently its old as shit, it wieghs like 400 lbs, its an IBM 9516-bxx when i set the resolution on 1024 x 768 its all distorted like something isnt the right size... it looks perfect on 1280 x 1024 and no matter the resolution only gives me the options of 16bit 24bit and 32 bit for color quality.

i have messed with all of the setting on the monitior and the computer that i know of... any suggestions... it looks like its been resized to a distorted shape... readable but mind numbing...

i just put it back up on ebay. screw it, i will probably end up making a little profit on reselling it, i bought it with buy it now like 8 minutes after it was posted, i raised the price $25 and put it back up.. most LCD's are going to around $180-200 on there anyway... selling this one for $155

trusn out.. the optimal viewing resolution is the 1280, so it basically looks like ass on any other resolution...

i can probably deal with it until i sell and deal with my CRT until i get another one... newegg has some good deals from when i was looking before... (no joke) so we shall see..

LCD's don't get the same resolution at the same size as CRT's. If I were to own an LCD at resolutions I use, I would have to get at least a 20". And those are helluxpensive

Think it got covered, but LCDs really need to run at their native resolution, especially the older, cheaper ones. For a decent 17" LCD, you're still looking in the $250 range right now.

now i looked at newegg and a few others, and all of thier native resolutions are 1280 x 1024 or whatever, but my parents have a gateway 17" works fine at 600 x 800 and 728 x 1024(or whatever) so is it just because its old as balls? will i be fine with just about any LCD on the market today? all of them i see at best buy and other places look fine at many different resolutions, my laptop was fine, basically every lcd i have ever seen, looks fine at either of the most popular resolutions, should i be leary still or should i be fine buying an up to date lcd?

I'm not the best person to ask on this. I have a tough time drawing the line between what I find acceptable for gaming and what others find acceptable for normal use. um...

Cnet tends to have good guides for stuff like this. Read up on the LCD parts and you should do dandy.

great info, thanks for the link, i was also curious about the pixel response rate, which that cleared up, i guess the question i have is nearly impossible to answer in general, its basically a device to device answer. some handle resizing from 1280 x 1024 to 600 x 800 or 1024 x 728, so its a matter of trial and error, which sucks. Most models you can find deals on online from newegg or pricewatch arent your typical best buy models, maybe a compusa or microcenter will help my issues, yea, micro center probably would do the trick, it seems its going to be a matter of finding a model cheap online, and going to a store and playing with it. im not doing this whole buy then sell shit again...

thanks for all the help, anyones suggestions are still welcome, looks like i might be headed to microcenter tomorrow.

Dunno about price, but the Dell LCDs tend to rate very high on most reviews...

tomshardware is usually a good place to start with research. Here's a review done of some 17" LCDs.

My favorite place to hunt information is anandtech though. Here's a refresher course on LCD monitors:

http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=1855

and the general section of their site devoted to displays:

I'd sift through the articles for anything 17" and see what seems to fit your bill.

 1280 * 1024 makes you blind? What size monitor would do that? I use that for my normal every day surfing and such, but when I am in my 3D applications, I use 1600 * 1200. But, back to the LCD's. I believe NEC/Mitsubishi LCD's are nice also, but don't take my word on it. The only LCD's I've really used are on Mac's and those are just plain Mac brand, hellaxpensive.

jesus, i of course packed up the LCD today, to mail to the "lucky" winner..

A: my CRT 21" is farking huge, it weighs as much as i do, take up half the desk...and now that i used the 1280 x 728 size i put on the 1024 x and it seems HUGE for me... so i see where you were coming from steggyd, its an acustomed thing, thing is, i like to rock the office chair back like a lounge chair, so im a solid 3-4 feet from the monitor. and until i get new contacts i need things a little biggger... and suddnely my desktop is full again, ha, it used to be neat and organized.... so little room so little shit..

i might end up going back to that size after all this mess, atleast i will have the confort of knowing i can use the lower res, ..

i pondered just hooking my PC up to the big screen tv, but windows would end up burning images into the screen since im on so much...

oh well... i might live with this a while.. i got bengals season ticket invoice due ..hell past due at this point.

Depending on what you do, you can always have your monitor on the 1280 resolution and go into the advanced appearance settings and adjust the font size to something easier for you to read. You'll get the spacious screen size that still has easy to read text.... Just one possible solution

that sounds almost like a display driver issue. were you running the latest drivers for that monitor?
