What in the world is going on with my NFL?
(Rotoworld) LenDale White, who was issued a citation on several charges in Denver last month, had his case continued until June 2 on Thursday.

Impact: LenDale has been working out at the team facility. Fantasy leaguers shouldn't be overly concerned with Chris Johnson's presence. Even if he picks up more than the 100 carries Chris Brown had last year, there are plenty of touches for White in a run-first offense.

Alleged shooter says he was framed by Pacman Jones
11:16 PM CDT on Thursday, May 1, 2008
Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man charged with shooting three people outside a Las Vegas strip club has denied he was involved and accused Pacman Jones of ordering the shooting and framing him to avoid identifying the real shooter.

Arvin Kenti Edwards of Renton, Wash., is being held in a Washington state jail on $1 million bail pending extradition to Nevada. He talked with WTVF-TV in Nashville by phone for a report that aired Wednesday.
Edwards told the TV station in a telephone interview that Jones lied to police about the Feb. 19, 2007, shooting at the Minxx club that left an employee paralyzed and two other people wounded. Edwards said Jones paid someone for the shooting, but that it wasn't him.

"I want to let them know I'm not the person who did this," Edwards said. "I've been shot before. I know how it feels."

Edwards accused Jones of lying to help his plea deal as Jones tries to return to the NFL. Jones received a new contract after being traded by the Tennessee Titans to the Dallas Cowboys last weekend.

Jones' agent and attorney, Worrick Robinson, said Edwards has reason to lie; Edwards faces three counts of attempted murder.

Police say Edwards opened fire outside the strip club after Jones was involved in a brawl inside and that Edwards later demanded $15,000 from Jones for "services rendered."

Jones told authorities he didn't order the shooting and declined to pay. But he said he reimbursed a friend after the friend paid the money on Jones' behalf. Jones also told police he saw the person who fired the shots at the club and identified Edwards, who has an amputated arm, in a police lineup April 18.

A warrant filed in the case said Edwards' phone records were checked and that he had contacted Jones in Atlanta and Tennessee.
Jones pleaded no contest Dec. 6 in Las Vegas to conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct in a plea deal that reduced two felony charges of coercion, each carrying a possible sentence of one to six years in prison.

In return, he agreed to tell police what he knew about the gunman. Jones has never acknowledged any role in the shooting.

NFL teams will be held accountable for draft-day gambles

05:38 PM CDT on Monday, April 28, 2008

NEW YORK – Wide receiver Mario Manningham admitted to NFL teams during the 2008 draft process that he failed drug tests at the University of Michigan.

Manningham projected as a first-round pick when he decided to skip his senior year at Michigan – but his admitted marijuana use raised a character flag that triggered his draft-day slide over the weekend. The New York Giants finally selected him late in the third round.

Draft prospects with suspensions, arrests and failed drug tests have tumbled down the board the last two drafts following NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's crackdown on player misconduct in 2007. They may tumble farther and faster in 2009.

Goodell informed NFL teams at the league's annual meeting in March that he would begin holding the clubs accountable when their players stray.

"If you have an individual player that has discipline from the personal conduct policy, a portion of that salary is going to be withheld as a fine," Goodell said Monday. "And that's going to escalate."

In the past, if a player was earning $500,000 and was suspended by the league, he would not be paid his salary and his team could just pocket that money.

"Now I may say pay $250,000 of that to us – 50 percent of it," Goodell said. "If it's his second incident, it might be $300,000. If it's his fourth incident, it might be $500,000."

That's how you get the attention of teams – hit them where they feel it most. In the pocketbook.

Right now, there is little risk for the club. A team can draft a player with first-round value but character concerns in the fifth round and view him as tremendous bargain.

If the player doesn't work out, he doesn't work out. There's no real damage to the team. He's just another fifth-round pick who didn't make it. Except that now the clubs will be held accountable for those draft-day gambles.

"At a certain point, we can have all these policies and resources available," Goodell said. "But if you start picking the wrong people, there's nothing I can do about that. I'm not ever going to make the choices of who you can have – but you're going to have to make better choices of the people you do [bring in]. That's the only way I can get to that [point].

"And I haven't ruled out competitive consequences, by the way – draft choices and such."

But Goodell said those details are still being worked out.

In 2007, Goodell took the first step toward cleaning up the league's image by cracking down on the players, suspending Pacman Jones, Odell Thurman and Chris Henry.

The second step by Goodell in 2008 will be the crackdown on teams.

Report: Police probe Harrison in Philadelphia shooting
ESPN.com news services

Updated: May 2, 2008, 4:06 PM ET

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison is under investigation in his hometown of Philadelphia in a shooting that took place late Tuesday afternoon, a source close to the investigation told Anthony Gargano of Philadelphia's WIP Radio.

The shooting reportedly occurred outside a North Philadelphia bar owned by Harrison.

Harrison has yet to be arrested or charged with the crime.

The source said the alleged victim came into the bar, Playmakers, around 5 p.m. and engaged in an argument with Harrison, who was at the bar. The victim then left the bar, heading to his car, with Harrison following. Gunfire broke out, the victim was hit in the hand, and a young girl was slightly injured by flying glass from a car that apparently was hit by a bullet.

Police came to scene, but the victim did not identify a shooter. On Wednesday, according to the source, ballistic tests showed that the gun that had fired the shots was a custom-made Belgian weapon, and police determined that Harrison owned such a gun.

Police then went to a Philadelphia car wash owned by Harrison to question him about the gun. Harrison admitted owning such a weapon, but claimed it never left his suburban Philadelphia home.

However, the source said the gun was discovered in a bucket at the car wash, and tests showed that it had fired seven bullets that matched those found at the scene.

The source said police were contacted Friday by an attorney representing a second alleged victim in the shooting, and police are now waiting for that individual to come forward.

Calls from ESPN to reach Harrison, his agent and the Colts for comment had not been returned.

Colts' Harrison interviewed about Philly shooting
by FOXSports.com

Updated: May 2, 2008, 9:48 PM EST

PHILADELPHIA - Indianapolis Colts star receiver Marvin Harrison was interviewed by police about a shooting near his North Philadelphia bar this week.

Lt. Frank Vanore said the investigation of Tuesday's shooting was continuing. Harrison has not been arrested or charged.

"He was interviewed," Vanore said Friday. "Why he was interviewed, that is all part of the investigation. No one is a suspect."

Harrison's agent, Tom Condon, insisted Friday that his client did not play a role in the incident.

"Marvin Harrison was not involved in any shooting. The report is erroneous," Condon told FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer.

While Condon would not comment on Harrison's interview with police, he maintained that Harrison was not the subject of the investigation.

Radio station WIP, citing unidentified sources, reported the alleged shooting victim argued with Harrison at Playmakers bar. The victim left and headed to his car, Harrison followed and gunfire broke out, the station reported. The alleged victim was shot in the hand and did not identify the shooter, according to the radio station.

Harrison, a prep football star at Philadelphia's Roman Catholic High, has owned Playmakers since July 2004, according to state records.

After the first day of their rookie minicamp, Colts coach Tony Dungy said he knew little more than had been reported.

"My phone has been ringing, too, but I don't have any details," Dungy said. "I really don't have any more information than you do."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is aware of the report and is looking into it. Harrison's agent, Tom Condon, did not immediately return a call.

A source told WIP that ballistic tests showed the shots were fired from a custom-made Belgian weapon, and police determined Harrison owns that kind of gun.

Police went to a Philadelphia car wash owned by Harrison and questioned him about the gun, the station said. Harrison acknowledged owning such a weapon, but told officials it never left his suburban Philadelphia home, the radio station reported.

The source told the station a gun was discovered in a bucket at the car wash, and tests showed it had fired bullets that matched those at the scene.

Harrison has played his entire 12-season career with the Colts and is the franchise's record-holder in every major receiving category — receptions (1,042), yards (13,944), touchdowns (123) and 100-yard games (59). The 35-year-old is one of only four players in league history to top 1,000 receptions.

But after eight consecutive Pro Bowl appearances, last season was the most frustrating of Harrison's career.

He injured his left knee against Denver on Sept. 30, finished with 20 receptions for 247 yards and one TD and missed all but five games.

Team president Bill Polian said in February that Harrison was recovering from offseason arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and had been rehabilitating the inflamed capsule in his left knee. He was not expected to be completely healthy for the start of the Colts training camp July 24.

Harrison, along with Peyton Manning and Edgerrin James, were nicknamed Indy's triplets in the late 1990s. He was a first-round draft pick in 1996 out of Syracuse and wound up the best receiver in a class that included Keyshawn Johnson and Eric Moulds.

Off the field, Harrison was sued following the 2005 Pro Bowl when three boys accused him of attacking them when they tried to get his autograph. The suit alleged Harrison "violently and physically attacked" the minors, including placing a "potentially deadly choke hold" on one of the boys, but it was later dismissed.

(Rotoworld) Cedric Benson was reportedly arrested early Sunday in Travis County, Texas, and is currently free on bond.

Impact: Just what he needs. And this isn't Benson's first off-field infraction; he was found guilty of breaking into a woman's house as a collegiate in '04. It wound up costing him time in the Del Valle Correctional Facility. He was arrested in 2002 on marijuana charges. The reason for Sunday's arrest is uncertain.
Impact: Because of the cap hit, it would hurt the Bears to cut him. They may secretly hope Benson's recovery from a broken ankle goes slowly so they can stash him on injured reserve. As for his pending court case, the Bears will let the legal system play itself out. Benson will be paid his $820,000 this season.
Hey Jeb - I'll add to your thread.

Updated: May 5, 2008, 9:58 AM ET
Falcons linebacker Michael Boley, who was one of Atlanta's leading tacklers in 2007, was charged with battery on Saturday, police said.

The 25-year-old Boley, who was a fifth-round draft pick in 2005 out of Southern Mississippi, was released on $1,200 bond.

"The Falcons organization is aware of the situation and will have no comment at this time," Falcons vice president of football communications Reggie Roberts said.

Boley had 110 tackles, four forced fumbles and two interceptions last season for Atlanta.

The Falcons have struggled with image issues highlighted by franchise quarterback Michael Vick's 23-month imprisonment on federal charges related to operating a dogfighting operation. The team also stumbled to a 4-12 record last season and head coach Bobby Petrino quit mid-season.

Boley, according to the newspaper, has drawn praise for taking care of his autistic son and his work as a spokesman for the disorder. He signed a one-year contract in April for just over $2 million, but both sides were working on a long-term extension.
Sources: Six of casings found after shooting came from Harrison's gun
ESPN.com news services

Updated: May 6, 2008, 12:18 AM ET

In order to see this media, please download Macromedia Flash Player 8Six of the bullet casings found after an April 29 shooting near Marvin Harrison's car wash and garage came from a gun that belongs to the Colts wide receiver, Philadelphia police sources told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio.

Police returned to the scene of the crime Monday to examine bullet holes in two residences after new information was provided to police by an alleged third victim of the shooting.

Harrison's representatives say Harrison was not present during the shooting incident, and that his gun was not involved. Monday, Harrison's attorney declined comment. Police say they have no suspects in the case.

The case is being taken over by Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham.

The Indianapolis Colts star receiver was interviewed by police about last week's shooting, but Harrison was neither arrested nor charged.

"He was interviewed," Lt. Frank Vanore said Friday. "Why he was interviewed, that is all part of the investigation. No one is a suspect."

Harrison's agent, Tom Condon, told ESPN's Chris Mortensen on Friday: "I've spoken with Marvin and I've spoken with his attorney, and they say the reports are erroneous. Marvin was not involved in any shooting, and he is not the subject of this investigation."

Condon declined to answer any other questions.

A source told the Philadelphia Daily News that Harrison, during an interview with police, later admitted to being in a fistfight on April 29, but the Colts receiver said he wasn't involved in the shooting.

A source told 610 WIP radio in Philadelphia that the victim came into Playmakers -- a bar owned by Harrison that is about a half-mile from his car wash -- about 5 p.m. and engaged in an argument with Harrison. The victim then left the bar, heading to his car, with Harrison following. Gunfire broke out and the victim was hit in the hand.

A source told the Philadelphia Daily News that a 2-year-old boy suffered a cut under his eye from glass that shattered when an errant bullet hit a car windshield, according to police.

Police came to the scene, but the victim did not identify a shooter.

On Wednesday of last week, according to the WIP report, a source said ballistic tests showed that the gun that had fired the shots was a custom-made Belgian weapon, and police determined that Harrison owned such a gun. A source told ESPN.com's John Clayton that the gun is registered.

Police then went to the Philadelphia car wash owned by Harrison to question him about the gun. Harrison admitted owning such a weapon but claimed it never left his suburban Philadelphia home.

However, WIP's source said the gun was discovered in a bucket at the car wash, and tests showed that it had fired seven bullets that matched those found at the scene.

Harrison, a prep football star at Philadelphia's Roman Catholic High, has owned Playmakers since July 2004, according to state records.

Harrison has played his entire 12-season career with the Colts and is the franchise's record holder in every major receiving category: receptions (1,042), yards (13,944), touchdowns (123) and 100-yard games (59). The 35-year-old is one of only four players in league history to top 1,000 receptions.

But after eight consecutive Pro Bowl appearances, last season was the most frustrating of Harrison's career.

He injured his left knee against Denver on Sept. 30, missed all but five games and finished with 20 receptions for 247 yards and one TD.

Off the field, Harrison was sued after the 2005 Pro Bowl when three boys accused him of attacking them when they tried to get his autograph. The suit alleged Harrison "violently and physically attacked" the minors, including placing a "potentially deadly choke hold" on one of the boys, but it was later dismissed.

NFL gun policy

While police investigate whether Marvin Harrison was involved in a Philadelphia-area shooting, the NFL's policy on guns is clear: "Be careful and understand the risks."

The league policy says a player may not possess a gun or other weapon while performing any service for his team or the NFL. In Harrison's case, he was not involved in any NFL-related function. He owns a bar and a car wash.

The policy advises: "If you legally possess a weapon, you must understand the local, state and federal laws that apply."

Weapons laws are different in each state, and this is where Harrison -- even if he's not involved in the shooting -- could face problems. In Pennsylvania, the owner of a weapon involved in a shooting can be charged in the crime. If police legally determine the handgun belongs to Harrison, he could be charged with at least a misdemeanor.

If that is the case, Harrison could face NFL discipline, which could result in a suspension. According to the policy: "If you violate a public law covering weapons -- for example, possession of an unlicensed firearm -- you are not only subject to discipline, including suspension from playing, but also subject to criminal prosecution."
Ex-Patriots Assistant Sends the N.F.L. Eight Tapes
New York Times
By GREG BISHOP
Published: May 8, 2008

A former New England Patriots employee has sent the N.F.L. eight videotapes showing the team recorded play-calling signals by coaches of five opponents in six games between the 2000 and 2002 seasons, in violation of league rules.

But the group of tapes does not include video of the St. Louis Rams’ walk-through practice the day before the 2002 Super Bowl. The employee, Matt Walsh, had been linked to such a tape by news media speculation.

Walsh emerged as a pivotal figure in the spying controversy that enveloped the Patriots last season after they were caught taping Jets defensive signals in the season opener.

Walsh, who worked for the Patriots from 1997 to 2003, agreed to turn over the tapes and other evidence by Thursday under an agreement reached last month between lawyers for the N.F.L. and Walsh. The agreement indemnifies Walsh from all future legal fees.

Walsh’s tapes show that the Patriots recorded the signals of offensive and defensive coaches in regular-season games against the Miami Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills, the Cleveland Browns and the San Diego Chargers and against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2002 American Football Conference championship game. In that game, the tape has been edited to show Steelers coaches signaling plays, followed by two different camera angles of the actual plays that were called.

The New York Times obtained a list of the Walsh videotapes. The information was later confirmed by Walsh’s lawyer, Michael Levy, from the Washington offices of McKee Nelson.

The N.F.L. declined to comment Wednesday evening because it did not have the tapes in its possession.

The Boston Herald reported the day before this year’s Super Bowl that a tape of the Rams existed, citing an anonymous source.

Walsh does not possess such a tape, Levy said.

“Mr. Walsh has never claimed to have a tape of the walk-through,” Levy said in a telephone interview. “Mr. Walsh has never been the source of any of the media speculation about such a tape. Mr. Walsh was not the source for the Feb. 2 Boston Herald article.”

On Tuesday, Walsh is scheduled to speak with Commissioner Roger Goodell and Senator Arlen Specter in separate meetings. Walsh could provide additional information at that time, including how the taping worked, how extensive it was, which Patriots employees were involved and the significance of the evidence he handed over.

The first tape is dated Sept. 25, 2000, from a game the previous day. The last is from Sept. 29 two years later. All the tapes are scheduled to arrive at N.F.L. offices Thursday morning.

Levy would not say whether Walsh was behind the camera on each tape, but confirmed that Walsh obtained the first seven tapes during his time in the Patriots’ video department, which ended after the 2002 Super Bowl.

The last tape, in September 2002 against the Chargers, was shot by someone else after Walsh left the video department for a job in the scouting department that ended in early 2003.

The Chargers tape shows raw footage, Levy said, of the San Diego coaches from the Patriots’ sideline, followed by a shot of the scoreboard showing time, down and distance. The tape contains no footage of actual plays during the game, only the sequence, which the Patriots could match to play tape.

The other seven tapes are more sophisticated. They show shots of the opposing coaches’ signals, followed immediately by a shot of the play, usually from the end zone camera, Levy said.

The tape from the A.F.C. championship game is the most extensive, showing two angles of each play.

Goodell has left open the possibility that additional evidence will lead to additional penalties against Coach Bill Belichick and the Patriots. After the Jets game, Goodell levied a total of $750,000 in fines and docked the Patriots a first-round draft pick.

After this year’s Super Bowl, Goodell met with Specter and revealed for the first time that Belichick’s illegal signal filming dated to the beginning of his tenure with the Patriots, in 2000. Some accounts said Belichick admitted to taping defensive signals, others just signals in general.

At the Super Bowl, Goodell said of the Patriots’ practice of taping, “I don’t think it taints their accomplishments.”

Under Belichick, the Patriots rose from one of the league’s middling teams to its best, winning three Super Bowls in four seasons. Last season, they went undefeated until losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl.

Based on a win-loss tally from games after the ones on tapes provided by Walsh, the Patriots went 9-6 against the Dolphins after the first taping. They also went 12-1 against the Bills, 3-0 against the Browns, 4-1 against the Steelers and 3-1 against the Chargers. This included three victories and no defeats in the playoffs.

“We consider the tapes of our coaching staff during our games against the New England Patriots to be a nonissue,” the Steelers chairman Dan Rooney said in a statement released in February.

Telephone messages to the five teams left Wednesday night were not returned.

Since Belichick’s first season in New England, when the Patriots finished 5-11 in 2000, they have gone 86-26 in the regular season, a .768 winning percentage. It remains unclear whether the league will make the tapes public. During the initial investigation into the Patriots, the league accepted seven tapes gathered by the team, dating to 2006, while collecting a written promise that it possessed no more. The N.F.L. destroyed the tapes that the Patriots turned over.

Under the indemnity agreement, Walsh’s lawyer gets to keep one copy of each tape, but cannot release it without the league’s consent.

(Rotoworld) Contrary to a February 2 report in the Boston Herald, former Patriots videotape assistant Matt Walsh does not have a videotape of the Rams' 2002 Super Bowl walkthrough.

Impact: Walsh gave the NFL eight videos of the team recording opponents' coaches between 2000 and 2002. The tapes show the Patriots stealing offensive and defensive signals in regular-season games against the Dolphins, Bills, Browns, and Chargers, and the Steelers in the 2002 AFC Championship. The NFL has not yet commented. Walsh's attorney says his client never claimed to have a tape of the Rams' walkthrough.

ESPN's Mike Fish reports the tapes turned over by Matt Walsh to the NFL include evidence that the Patriots tried to steal offensive signals.

"We don't know [about attempts to steal offensive signals] yet because we haven't looked at the tapes," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said. "One of them is labeled 'OFF signals.' None of others are listed that way. Let us look at the tapes and we'll have more to say about that."

(Rotoworld) Patriots DB Willie Andrews entered a plea to marijuana possession in a Lowell District court on Friday.

Impact: He admitted there's enough evidence to convict him, but didn't plead guilty and will face no jail time. A judge continued the case for a year. During that time, Andrews must speak to student athletes and enter the NFL's substance abuse program. Police found Andrews with a half-pound of pot in February.

(Rotoworld) Florida police have decided not to press charges against Broncos DT Marcus Thomas on drug possession charges.

Impact: The police apparently determined that the cocaine they found on the night in question belonged to Thomas' friend, who was driving his truck. His friend will go on trial, but Thomas is in the clear and is slated to start for Denver this year.

(KFFL) Bill Williamson, of ESPN.com, reports the Florida state attorney's office has dropped its case against Denver Broncos DL Marcus Thomas. Thomas was arrested in March for cocaine possession, however formal charged were never filed. Thomas' attorney, Charlie Truncale, said Friday, May 9, that he had spoken with assistant state attorney James Boyle earlier in the day and was told the case had been dropped. The cocaine belonged to Thomas' friend, Bryce Carter, a former high school teammate of Thomas. Truncale said in March that both Thomas and Carter told the arresting officers that the cocaine was in the possession of Carter, who was driving when Carter's truck was stopped for a traffic violation.

Hey Jeb - I'll add to your thread.

Check out this puff piece I've found on ESPN:

(KFFL) Steve Wyche, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons LB Michael Boley apologized for his arrest on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge. Boley said he was "embarrassed" to have taken attention away from other team-related developments. Boley's wife, Chantelle, accused Michael Boley of assaulting her and throwing her out of their home following an argument. In his account in a police report, Michael Boley acknowledged a confrontation and that he put his wife out of the house.
