My 1st Day Mock

Recommended Posts

A few things before I get started...

- If it looks like I'm using pictures and videos to makeup for what is at best a decent mock, it's because I am.

- These aren't my ideal guys. But I've been following this long enough to know that those ideal guys either get chosen right before the Bengals pick or the Bengals pass over them completely anyway. I think that these are realistic choices based off the bajillion mock drafts that I've read and reading all the scouting reports I could for the last few weeks.

- I wanted to take a Linebacker, but the LB group is very weak after the big names come off of the board. So I didn't seen the sense in reaching for one just to get one.

- I'm only mocking the first 3 round because it's pointless to mock the others. Seriously who would have mocked Matt Sherry last year? C'mon.

- All of my picks are on the offensive side of the ball. I didn't realize this until after I completed it, but these are key positions that you hopefully wouldn't have to draft for a long time.

- I didn't mock any trades. I think that Chad is still here in 2009 whether we like it or not.

Here we go.

ROUND 1:

With the sixth pick in the NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select:

Andre Smith, Offensive Tackle, Alabama

Before January, Andre Smith was considered a likely candidate to be the number 1 pick in the draft. Why? Because he's dominant. His measurables may not be the best, his body may resemble a giant pile of KFC's mashed potatoes, but put a helmet on Andre Smith and watch him pancake some motherfuckers. You keep this guy motivated and under 350 lbs and he excels no matter where you play him. He'll be a multi-time pro-bowler.

ROUND 2:

With the thirty-eighth pick in the NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select:

Eric Wood, Center, Louisville

I know, I know...you wanted Alex Mack. But we're Bengals fans. We should all know by now that God hates us and that there is absolutely no way in hell that he would allow Mack to fall to us. Eric Wood is a bit of a reach here, but odds are that he and Unger are both gone by the time we pick in the 3rd round. So you go ahead and get your Center now, just to ensure that you get one. He's an ugly motherfucker, but he'll beat Cook and Santucci for that starting spot and keep it for the next 10 years.

ROUND 3:

With the seventieth pick in the NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select:

Shonn Greene, Running Back, Iowa

Ideally I wanted LeShaun McCoy, but I'm trying to keep this draft realistic. Greene is a guy that should be there at this pick. He's got his fair share of off the field issues. He was academically ineligible in 2007 and there are some questions about his work ethic. But on the field he's a beast. He's not the speedy quick RB that we were hoping for to compliment Benson. No, since we drafted Wood and Smith, this team's new style of running is pound it, pound it and pound it some more. Greene was the second leading rusher in college football last season (over 100 yards in every game) and he had over 20 TD's. He reminds me a lot of Corey Dillon. He's the perfect guy to spell Benson during 2009 and could one day be 'the guy" at RB.

With the ninety-eighth pick in the NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select:

Chase Coffman, Tight End, Missouri

I'm probably going to have to justify this one. The Bengals have Reggie Kelly and Ben Utecht, but Coffman is just to good to pass on here. He had to get surgery in January and had to miss out on everything. He missed the Senior Bowl, the Combine and all his Pro-Days. The injury is going to make him fall, and the team that takes him is getting themselves one hell of a steal. Had he not gotten injured, there is no doubt in my mind that he's a late 1st/early 2nd round pick. He doesn't have the flash and speed of some of the prospects, but the guy catches everything. He's essentially a 6'6 receiver that creates tons of mismatches. Look at the impact that Zack Miller, Jason Witten, Owen Daniels and John Carlson have all had in the NFL in the last few seasons. Chase will be right there with them in two years. Reggie Kelly is in the final year of his contract, Matt Sherry is a project at best and I just don't think Utecht is the answer.

I'll give you the prescient Coffmann pick. Smith wasn't really all that hard to predict, and there was no way we would have known that Rey would have fallen as far as he did, which probably went against where our boards were.

I am super excited about Chase, provided he stays healthy, which is the problem we had with Utecht, and we thought we were getting that same kind of player from him as we now expect from Chase, with the notable exception that Utecht can't sniff Chase's jock in terms of collegiate production.
