Sis is right that we could live in a police state and still not be safe from terrorism. The problem is, you can't simply do nothing to try to prevent it and just hope nothing happens. You have to draw lines and you have to do things to try to prevent it.

The question then becomes, what do you do and where do you draw the lines. Those decisions will always be debatable. One thing I do find ironic, is that in general, those who want to take away freedoms like the right to bear arms, or banning cigarettes, are usually the ones who are screaming about the patriot act taking away their freedoms, and vice-versa.

Most of us are all for taking away freedoms we don't agree with, but dead set against the ones we want.

I'm an atheist who voted for Bush both terms, so I obviously don't agree with him on everything. There has never been a President that I agreed with on everything, or disagreed with on everything. Having said that, I don't regret voting for him.

I'm truly independant with Libertarian leanings more than any other party, even though for the purposes of this board I accept the label of fucking republican with a certain amount of pride. :)

The main reason I seldom vote for democrats is that I truly think it has become essentially a socialist party. Some people embrace socialism, and I don't think it's evil, I just think it's ineffective, and contrary to the principals of freedom.

As far as the original point of this thread, Hillary is about the only person Bush could nominate for the seat without a fight.

I just hope for someone who uses common sense and reason rather than political leanings or pressure when making decisions.

i'm going to try to get this thread back on track, though it will probably take a couple of faces again...

i was listening to harry reid talk the other day, and his feelings were the president would nominate a conservative... he said that (paraphrasing) "i know all the special interest groups on both sides of the aisle want a long, bitter fight... but i just don't see that right now" God do i hope he is right b/c the last thing we need is to waste a year of work, and then still have things like SS going nowhere...

my pick would be janice rogers brown, b/c she has just gone through these hearings, and seems like a good canidate... i agree w/ you saying that bush should use common sense, b/c even though this is probably the most important thing he'll do besides the war on terror (historically speaking) we can get a conservative judge in there, and still not piss of the dem's...

SEN. SCHUMER CAUGHT ON CELLPHONE: 'WE ARE GOING TO WAR' OVER SUPREME COURT

**Exclusive**

Senate Judiciary Committee member Chuck Schumer got busy plotting away on the cellphone aboard a Washington, DC-New York Amtrak -- plotting Democrat strategy for the upcoming Supreme Court battle.

Schumer, promised a fight over whoever the President’s nominee was: “It's not about an individual judge… It's about how it affects the overall makeup of the court.”

Schumer was overheard on a long cellphone conversation with an unknown political ally, and the DRUDGE REPORT was there!

Schumer, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, proudly declared, “We are contemplating how we are going to go to war over this.”

Schumer went on to say how hard it was to predict how a Supreme Court justice would turn out: “Even William Rehnquist is more moderate than they expected. The only ones that resulted how they predicted were [Antonin] Scalia and [Ruth Bader] Ginsburg. So most of the time they've gotten their picks wrong, and that's what we want to do to them again.”

Schumer later went on to mock the “Gang of 14” judicial filibuster deal and said it wasn’t relevant in the Supreme Court debate.

“A Priscilla Owen or Janice Rogers Brown style appointment may not have been extraordinary to the appellate court but may be extraordinary to the Supreme Court.”

By the time the train hit New Jersey, Schumer shifted gears and called his friend and “Gang of 14” member, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. The two talked in a very friendly manner about doing an event sometime this week together.
