Most bulbs average 2k hours.. Most replacement lamps run you $300-400. So you're looking at buying a new lamp every year. 5 years x $300-400... 6... 8 years? + the cost of projection setup = $$ or buy a hdtv now for a couple/few thousand for what it may cost you on upkeep on the projector. You get the point..

Will it run out during the superbowl next year.. bengals down by 3 and in the red zone, 1min left... ?

Are you going to have an extra $400 to blow that week on a bulb?

etc..etc.. Some projectors though let you check lamp life, hours it's been on.. some now are even 4k hours, then we are talking more $$ though for the unit.

If you got the money.. it's definitely worth at least looking at, they've come a long way..

IMO though.. not worth the hassle, or the potential hassle... we have many projections on display at work, and it seems every month we are replacing the damn lamps. Even though most of them get left on all day..
Dad's bulb is $175 to replace and has a 4000K life rating. It is a first-class projector. So how much is it to replace a whole plasma unit after 11 years when the clarity issue between the two is negligble at best?

I dont know what to make of the plasma issue. It probably only affects a minimal percentage of people that own plasma TV's because in order to buy one in the first place you need to be decently well off and most people that are, dont keep a TV for 10+ years. Plasmas are pretty sweet but not sure if it is that much better than DLP and other new technologies.

Anyone here use their main TV for 11 years? Raise your hands!

No one?

I didn't think so.

I've now gone plasma, and will never go back.

It's glorious, just hanging there on the wall, not requiring furniture.

Absolutely glorious.

The wife and I picked our TV. Once the tax refund deposits, this is what we will have:

Hitachi 50" HDTV (50VF820)

50" LCD rear-projection HDTV: Discover unparalleled performance from this big-screen UltraVison HDTV. Enhanced LCD rear-projection technology produces sharp, smooth pictures from a slim cabinet that's less than 17" deep.

CableCARDâ„¢ compatible: Access digital cable content without a separate cable box. This compatability also provides simplified "one remote control" operation for cable programming on participating systems.

Widescreen: Enjoy all of the action you see in the movies at home. The widescreen format shows movies in their natural cinematic format without letterboxing. Reverse 3:2 pulldown technology adjusts frame rates so movies have a smooth, natural flow.

Improved picture: Hitachi's Dual Focus Lens System and 3-Panel Light Engine produce superior contrast and remarkable detail from edge to edge and corner to corner. This exclusive technology also reduces the overall TV cabinet size, resulting in a sleek plasma-like appearance.

Audio enhancement: The 40-watt 3-way speaker system features separate drivers for high and low frequencies that deliver clear dialog and rich, full sound even without additional home theater equipment.

Picture in picture: Enjoy watching two shows or sporting events at once with the HD Digital Windowâ„¢ Split Screen.

A/V versatility: HDMI, component and S-video inputs make it easy to create the ultimate home theater system. The optical audio output guarantees great Dolby® Digital sound.

When are you getting married? If it is late in the year, next years tax return should be enough. That's what happened to me.
